RW313 - Bonus - Ghostkeeper

In this special New Years episode of The Rewatch Podcast, Cory and Nathan take a chilling trip into the mountains as they discuss "Ghostkeeper."

Trailer:

Our Favourite Trivia:

Ghostkeeper was filmed on location in Lake Louise at the Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. Filming began on November 30, 1980, and finished on December 23, 1980. The film was photographed by cinematographer John Holbrook. Producer Harry Cole commented during the shoot: "It's a producer's dream— it has one location in a controlled environment." Cole also described film as more a "suspense movie" along the lines of Psycho (1960).

Ghostkeeper was produced via a tax shelter on a budget of around CA$750,000 dollars. Its tax shelter funding made the production's financial situation rather unstable; according to Jim Makichuk the film's money started to run out when the movie was only half shot, so rather than cancel the production altogether, he decided to abandon the remaining script and make things up as he went along, hoping to at least retain the film's creepy atmosphere. He said this explains the released film's rather uneven, incoherent second half and sparse use of the plot's monster. His original intention was to film a much longer ending, including an extended chase sequence with Spier and the Wendigo creature on the rooftop of the Deer Lodge hotel.

The film's score was composed by Paul Zaza, who also composed music for fellow Canadian slasher film productions Prom Night (1980), My Bloody Valentine (1981), and Curtains (1983). Zaza got on board due to the involvement of film editor Stan Cole. In fact, some of the musical themes featured in Ghostkeeper were also used in Prom Night.

In May 1981, it was reported that the film was to be screened out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film was released in Canada and the United States in December 1981, and was distributed by New World Pictures. It did not receive a home video release until September 1986. The film was released on VHS in September 1986 through New World Pictures' home video branch. Director Jim Makichuk stated in an interview that he was trying to get a DVD released through Netflix with a quality print of the film.

In April 2012, Ghostkeeper was released for the first time on DVD through Code Red Releasing. The DVD included a commentary with Jim Makichuck, Riva Spier and Murray Ord, an interview with director of photography John Holbrook as well as an interview with actress Georgie Collins. The film is presented in 1.78.1 anamorphic widescreen for the first time on video and has been restored from the only known existing film elements. On August 18, 2017, Code Red issued a Blu-ray edition of the film featuring a new 2K scan of the original film elements.

An alternate opening to the film was shot by distributors two years after the initial production. In the opening, a young man fleeing from the hotel at sunlight and running into the woods until backing up against a tree. While pinned, he is killed (presumably by Danny) and stabbed from a sharp wood stake. This opening was not featured in the 1986 VHS.

RW312 - SeaQuest Rewatch S02E08-09 - Dead Delivery

In this weeks episode of The SeaQuest Rewatch, Cory and Tom reunite with mothers and brothers as they discuss season 2 episodes 8 & 9, "When We Dead Awaken" and "Special Delivery."

When We Dead Awaken:

While finishing up shore leave, Brody once again tries to woo a lovely young lady and while it seems to have been going along swimmingly, she gives him a kiss on the check and leaves. Once he’s back onboard the SeaQuest however, Brody finds that the boat isn’t ready to embark yet as General Thomas has asked them to wait and do bussing duty for Undersecretary Meyers and her crew, leaving Brody time to go and seek the young woman out. He eventually finds her but she seems reluctant to get involved, walking away when suddenly Brody senses something is wrong and manages to shove her out of the way as a sniper takes a shot at her. Brody chases him down and a fight ensues but the shooter gets the upper hand and runs off. Brody returns to the woman who calls him “her little man,” revealing that she is actually Brody’s mother, Alison, who had contracted a deadly virus when he was six, and was sent to be frozen at a cryogenic facility until a cure could be found, leaving the young boy to be raised by his grandparents. Alison tells her son that despite the fact that the virus will begin to affect her, she wanted to be awakened from cryogenic sleep when he had reached adulthood so she could see what became of him.

Onboard the Seaquest, Alison starts remembering an incident with her friend that happened before she became infected with the virus, but collapses and ends up recuperating in the infirmary when one of Undersecretary Meyers' crewmembers sneaks into her room and begins to try and inject a poison into her IV. Working on a tip from an observant Lucas, Ortiz, Piccolo, and company interrupt the man who leads them on a chase throughout the ship, eventually taking Lucas hostage but finding himself outmatched when Dagwood comes to the rescue. Unfortunately, an analysis of the DNA of this man and the sniper reveal that they have had outlawed medical procedures done to ensure that their identities could not be discovered.

Dr. Smith tries a probe into Alison’s memories but the images are still very vague and she awakes in a panic when a man appears in the memories and appears to attack her friend, killing her. On General Thomas’s orders, Alison is taken to a hospital to be given the medical treatment she needs to recover.

While Brody waits outside his mother's room, Lucas finally finishes decoding the scans of Alison's memories and discovers the man in them was a young General Thomas. Brody rushes into his mother's room but she's already been taken by Thomas and Dr. Packard, the man responsible for both infecting her with the virus and then putting her into cryo sleep in order to cover up the murder, thereby keeping Thomas's name and reputation clean.

Brody sneaks into Thomas's home followed by the Seaquest crew close behind, and they manage to apprehend Packard, but the General has Alison hostage on a boat as he pleads with Brody to  work it out with him. Piccolo appears suddenly from the water and disarms General Thomas as Brody gets his mother to safety. Alison agrees to go back to cryo sleep with the hope that current medical advancements will be able to find a cure soon, content that her son has become a good man.

Special Delivery:

As the crew of the Seaquest undergo their annual psychological profile meetings with Dr. Smith, they are alerted to the news that Dagwood, having the day off from duty, has been arrested for the murder of Dr. Wilhelm Brown, the man responsible for creating the GELF warriors. Due to Dagwood's simple nature, he doesn't remember where he was or what he was doing on the night in question because no one told him to remember, leading him to be tried and sentenced to prison for the remainder of his days.

While the crew reacts with shock and disbelief, Brody and Ford are tasked with transporting Dagwood to the prison but upon arriving, the two feel that since they have time left, they want Dagwood to experience all the things in life that he never got to, so they take him around town for fine dining, carnival delights, reckless driving, and some dancing courtesy of Officer Henderson. Things go awry however when Henderson falls asleep after their dance and awakens to find Dagwood gone.

Elsewhere in the city, Dagwood is seen attacking a diner, stealing a truck and leading police on a car chase. Lucas tracks Dagwood down but Dagwood angrily orders him to take him home, forcing the boy to drive him Gen-U-Flect Labs, the place where the GELFs were grown. Meanwhile, Dagwood starts to remember his upbringing at Gen-U-Flect and the exercises they would do and heads off to find the lab, happening upon Lucas who is scared of him.

Dagwood enters the building and finds several clones of himself in different stages of growth until he finds one that looks exactly like him, the very clone that had actually killed Dr. Brown and caused havoc around the city. A fight ensues leading to a huge explosion in which Dagwood emerges victorious from the building. Exonerated, Dagwood returns to duty and leaves a necktie for Henderson as thanks for teaching him to dance and she responds with a kiss.

RW311 - Bonus - The Ref

In this special Christmas episode of The Rewatch Podcast, Cory and Nathan deal with some Hostile Hostages as they discuss "The Ref."

Trailer:

Our Favourite Trivia:

Richard LaGravenese co-wrote the film with his sister-in-law Marie Weiss. It was inspired by their families. For example, the dinner scene: "Both Marie and I are Italian Catholics who married into Jewish families, so we do have those big holiday dinners," LaGravenese said. Weiss began writing the script in 1989 after she and her husband moved from New York to California. Inspiration came from an argument she had with him and she thought, "Wouldn't it be great if there were a third party to step in and referee?" She wrote several drafts and consulted with LaGravenese in 1991 and they took it to Disney. The studio approved the project within 20 minutes. LaGravenese spent a year revising the script until he finally got "tired of doing rewrites for executives."

After Ted Demme directed comedian Denis Leary in No Cure for Cancer, a stand-up comedy special for Showtime, they got the script for The Ref and decided to do it. The studio cast Leary based on the sarcastic funny man persona he cultivated in MTV spots that Demme directed. Their involvement motivated LaGravenese to come back to the project. Executive producer Don Simpson described the overall tone of The Ref as "biting and sarcastic. Just my nature."

When this was released originally in the UK it was called Hostile Hostages.

Film debut of J.K. Simmons.

The marriage counselor the couple sees is named, "Dr. Wong." This character is played by actor BD Wong.

Denis Leary's line "Lady, your husband ain't dead. He's hiding!" is a direct quote of a line from the classic Abbott and Costello routine “Susquehanna Hat Company".

Early in the film, Lloyd asks Gus what his name is, and Gus answers: "Fuck you, that's my name." This line was more famously said in Glengarry Glen Ross two years earlier, which also starred Kevin Spacey.

The family's name, Chasseur, is French for 'hunter'.

John Scurti plays (Lt. Steve Milford) went on to play Lt. Kenneth "Lou" Shea in Rescue Me along side Dennis Leary (Gus).

The Officer in charge is referred to by everyone as "Lt Huff" But his name tag reads "Chief Huff"

At the end of the film when Lloyd (Spacey) and Caroline (Davis) are talking to the police in their foyer, there are several close-ups of Lloyd's wrist watch, which appears to contain the Travelers Insurance umbrella logo. The film takes place in Connecticut and Hartford, CT is the corporate headquarters of Travelers.

After test audiences responded poorly to the film's original ending—Gus turns himself in to show Jesse that a life of crime leads nowhere quickly—a new ending was shot in January 1994.

Appeared on Entertainment Weekly's list of The 50 Best Movies You've Never Seen in the July 16, 2012 issue.

RW310 - SeaQuest Rewatch S02E06-07 - Sincerest Other

In this weeks episode of The SeaQuest Rewatch, Cory and Tom take a long, hard look at themselves and stop to smell the flowers as they discuss season 2 episodes 6 & 7, "Sincerest Form of Flattery" and "By Any Other Name."

Sincerest Form of Flattery:

An experimental war submarine named The Marauder is accidentally launched when a mistake during a download occurs, setting it off on an attack against Pearl Harbor but luckily there are very few casualties since the launched missiles hit only the combat range areas of the base.

Admiral Noyce contacts Bridger and reveals that the sub is broadcasting one word: his very name of Bridger  As the SeaQuest is ordered to search for the Marauder, it begins to attack a second base but Bridger realizes what the sub is doing and is able to warn the personnel to evacuate and get away from the combat range resulting in only two casualties.

Dr Smith senses that Bridger's thought patterns are a part of the sub's AI, and after talking with Noyce, they get confirmation that scans done of the captain years before could have been used in the design of the computer AI.

Now understanding that the sub is following attack patterns that Bridger himself programmed years earlier during simulated war games, they begin to come up with a plan to take down the submarine with Ford giving the commands in the hopes of fooling the sub. The plan ends up failing however as the Marauder tricks them and attaches a nuclear mine to the bottom of the SeaQuest. Bridger contacts the sub and comes face to face with himself, and volunteers to come over and talk, but once aboard, the Marauder takes off and launches its attack on the next base.

Luckily on the Seaquest, Piccolo manages to disable the mine, despite his dyslexia, with help from the crew and Darwin's knowledge of Bridger's secret key code from his safe. Meanwhile, back on the Marauder, Bridger tries to get the AI to realize what it's doing and how he would never launch an attack like this that would kill so many innocents, but the AI is unstoppable until the captain reveals that his son had died. The AI becomes conflicted but eventually relents and disables the missiles it sent, followed by allowing Bridger to escape while it activates its self destruct sequence and destroys itself.

The Aunt was played by Mimi Lieber. She played Kellogg in the SeaQuest episode “The Stinger.” She also played one of Joey's similar looking sisters in an episode of Friends called “The One Where Chandler Can't Remember Which Sister.”

Johnathan Mangum played Covington; the annoyed scientist guy in the beginning. Still a working actor, he’s recently been in Glow on Netflix as a few characters, worked as an improv comedian with Drew Carey and Wayne Brady on various projects and appeared on Let's Make A Deal.

Another science guy was played by Steve Purnick. He’s had a bunch of guest spots but had a recurring detective character in The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo with Pat Morita.

One of the soldiers was Paul Vroom who played Yuri in an episode of Thunder in Paradise.

Secretary general McGrath was played by Michael Costello. He first appeared in the alien episode but will be a recurring character for the rest of this season and the next. He’s only got a few handfuls of credit but was a part of something called The Real Adventures of Sherlock
Jones and Proctor Watson in which he played the father Ben Hudson and Proctor Watson.
The News Reporter was Elizabeth Rothan and she will return as The Dispatcher next season.

By Any Other Name:

The SeaQuest answers a mayday from an underwater horticulture colony where the inhabitants were experimenting with gene splicing in order to try and create new varieties of underwater plants.

Upon arrival, Brody, Ortiz, Henderson and some red shirts explore the colony and find no living creatures aside from the very abundant plant life. With nothing to see, everyone returns back to the Seaquest save the two red shirts who remain behind in case the colonists are in hiding and someone does show up.

Meanwhile, Bridger is trying to get an apparently sick Darwin back to full health. Out of ideas, he asks Dr. Smith to try and do a reading on him resulting in them all realizing that Darwin just needs access to sunlight. Making some adjustments to the shops lighting controls allows them to simulate the sun and Darwin begins feeling better, and knows now that he will need to leave Seaquest from time to time to soak up the rays.

Back in the colony, the red shirts find themselves being played with by the plants that seem to be able to move their branches and roots around, attacking them. Back on Seaquest, Henderson also finds herself under attack from a pair of flowers she brought back from the colony that now seem to have grown to monstrous proportions.

Ford orders Brody and his team back to the colony after the red shirts call to report in while the plant onboard begins attacking all over the ship, eventually crippling it and taking it down deeper into the ocean. As Brody and crew fend off attacking plants, waiting for the Seaquest to finish repairs and retrieve them, Bridger discovers that the sun light they created for Darwin will kill the plant onboard but before they can use that to their advantage, the plant attacks their system controls and power is cut.

Brody is ordered to access the environmental controls for the colony and turn up the sunlight, a task made difficult due to the plants blocking him, but he eventually manages to break through, killing the killer plants. Back onboard the Seaquest, unable to use the computer to blow the ballasts and get the ship up to the surface, Dagwood uses his strength to manually move them and the ship rises, allowing sunlight in to the ship, and destroying the ghastly greens.

RW309 - SeaQuest Rewatch S02E04-05 - Vapors Time

In this weeks episode of The SeaQuest Rewatch, Cory and Tom escape the heat and fight the future as they discuss season 2 episodes 4 & 5, "Vapors" and "Playtime."

Vapors:

The crew of SeaQuest gets to experience a little well earned shore leave with plans to meet up at Bridger’s place for a barbecue.
While Lucas teaches Darwin the concept of money, Bridger shows off his plant room to Smith and the two get a bit closer before being interrupted by Piccolo who then proceeds to spread a rumor about the two. Bridger consults his holographic advisor about his feelings but finding no answer there decides to retire to his beach house to contemplate further.

Ford, Brody, and Ortiz troll the waters for hours supposedly looking for some perfect women to hang out with. Eventually Ortiz gets frustrated with them, realizing that his friends are more concerned with their careers and so he jumps ship to go meet up with some women.

Meanwhile O’Neil and Henderson go on a date which at times seems ok but devolves into a discussion of O’Neil wanting to keep any relationship on the downlow with the result of Henderson smashing ice cream in his face when he insults her.

Piccolo gets a call from his estranged father who asks him to help save his mother who has been popping pills to reverse her aging process. Lucas and Piccolo both find themselves both quite taken with her and repulsed, seeing as the pills have made her look like a beautiful young 25 year old again. After Lucas and Piccolo along with Dagwood break into Smith’s lab to test the pills, the doctor shows up and helps them discover that the pills are actually a type of insecticide that burns the fat from the inside, and then goes to work on your muscles. Piccolo apologizes for spreading the rumors while Smith says she will need to transfer off the SeaQuest due to UEO regulations.

Bridger and Smith later meet up to talk and share a dance before everyone shows up for the barbecue, with even Oneil and Henderson reunited. As everyone enjoys the party, Ortiz waves to them from the deck of a yacht, flanked by two women he met and Bridger and Piccolo walk off together as they are kindred workers both in need of human counsel.

Nick is played by Dom Deluise, real life father of Peter and Michael. He is known for movies such as Cannonball Run, Blazing Saddles, The Secret Of Nimh, the All Dogs Go To Heaven franchise, and so many cameos in TV shows.
David Deluise, younger brother of Peter and Michael (Dagwood and Piccolo) appears as The Guard who tells Marie to leave the club. He’s best known for The Wizards of Waverly Place (106 episodes). We’ve seen him before in the Lois & Clark episode “I’ve Got A Crush On You” as one of the Toasters (flamethrower guys).

Marie was played by Leslie Hope. She’s still a working actor. She has recently made recurring appearances in the series Slasher, Suits, and Tyrant. Probably best known for playing Terri Bauer on 24.

The Doctor is played by Patricia Kennell Carroll. This is her only credit.

The song playing in the smokers club is called “Monkey in the Whitehouse” by the band Magadog.

Playtime:

The crew of the SeaQuest receive a distress call from what sounds like a young girl, despite Dr Smith being unable to sense anyone. Bridger orders the crew forward into a mysterious hole that appears in the ocean and they suddenly find themselves more than 200 years in the future with no way of going back.

Piccolo, Henderson, Ortiz, and Brody search the nearby town for answers but find no one, only two giant robots bent on shooting at each other. Lucas Bridger and Smith inspect a computer which explains to them that it brought them here to save her babies and they learn that the people of the world allowed computers to take over their lives which in turn led the humans to develop purely digital relationships, never meeting in person, and playing games that eventually ended up killing everyone as they held human life with little regard. Lucas joins the game and manages to take down the two robots, leaving Ortiz and company to bring the boy and girl back to SeaQuest where they begin to learn how to interact with each other in person, mentally and physically.

Lucas learns of a theory that says the future cannot exist without the past and that the past cannot exist without the future. Thus, in order for them to return to the past, the future must be ensured, meaning that the two people playing video games, the last two people on earth, must start a family and ensure that life will continue. Smith states that leaving the boy and girl won’t help because they will always go back to their video games, choosing to interact the way they always have bringing Lucas to the realization that the computers must be shut down so that the two will be forced to interact. Once he does that, the disturbance that brought the SeaQuest to the future disappears from the screen and the SeaQuest is able to return to their own time.

Sarasota is a city south of Tampa on Florida’s Gulf Coast that was once the winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus. Today, it hosts a number of cultural institutes, notably the Ringling Museum of Art, which showcases old masters and modern art. It’s also the gateway to miles of beaches with fine sand and shallow waters, such as Lido Beach and Siesta Key Beach.

A Möbius strip, Möbius band, or Möbius loop, is a surface with only one side and only one boundary. The Möbius strip has the mathematical property of being unorientable. It can be realized as a ruled surface. Its discovery is attributed to the German mathematicians Johann Benedict Listing and then independently August Ferdinand Möbius in 1858, though a structure similar to the Möbius strip can be seen in Roman mosaics dated circa 200–250 AD.

The boy in the commercial was Johnathan Bouck and besides a handful of credits as guest characters, he did appear in an episode of Thunder In Paradise!

The girl in the commercial was Heather De Oreo and only had one other credit, one episode of Tom Hanks’ From the Earth To the Moon series.

Joanna Garcia Swisher played Iris; the young girl survivor. Previously she had a lead in the shows Reba, Are You Afraid Of The Dark, Freaks and Geeks, and Privileged among others. She most recently played Ariel the Mermaid in Once Upon A Time and Amy in a short lived sitcom called Kevin Probably Saves The World starring Jason Ritter.

RW308 - SeaQuest Rewatch S02E02-03 - Fear the Deep

In this weeks episode of The SeaQuest Rewatch, Cory and Tom search for the meaning of anger as they discuss season 2 episodes 2 & 3, "The Fear That Follows" and "Sympathy for the Deep."

The Fear that Follows:

When Darwin is arrested for being a spy, it's revealed that the aliens the Seaquest encountered and subsequently covered up, have received Bridger's message and have thus been communicating with the dolphin, indicating they wish to visit and initiate a first contact scenario. At the same time, Darwin develops signs of a symbol on his skin, a symbol that Dagwood found himself drawing as well, over and over.

The top brass however are not keen on the idea of contact, seeing the aliens as a possible threat albeit one with technological advances they can exploit and so, under the command of General Thomas's right hand man, Lt. Reinhardt, they take every precaution to insure that they are kept under observation and lock and key as much as possible. Their first meeting starts off well, with the aliens having developed a device allowing them to communicate, but soon, Dr Smith, under orders from General Thomas, tries to read the alien minds. The aliens quickly determine she is snooping and abruptly cut her off from further attempts, but otherwise do not seem unnerved.

In the middle of the night, one of the aliens visits Lucas and motions for him to accompany him outside where they meet the other two aliens. Ford and Brody show up to find Lucas standing with two aliens. The two approach Ford and Brody and absorb the two officers, taking over their bodies, just as the third alien had done to Lucas seconds before, and they all set off for the nearest native American reservation.

Meanwhile, Bridger, along with Thomas and Reinhardt find evidence of where Ford, Brody and Lucas were and learn from Oneil that the symbol on Darwin looks to be a Timecuan prophecy detailing the end days.

While the aliens meet with the local Iroquois tribe, a metal box is beamed down, interrupted by the helicopter arrival of Bridger and company. They are shot down by the aliens, but those inside appear suddenly on the ground, unharmed.

Reinhardt freaks out and takes one of the aliens captive at gunpoint and opens the metal box, revealing the aliens' deceased leader. They explain that they are all that is left of their world because of mistakes their race made and their wish now is to find the beginnings of life and start their species over, hopefully being able to avoid the same mistakes again. Before leaving they ask Lucas to join them and help them start over, but he declines, choosing to stay on Earth. Once the aliens depart, the crew finds themselves aboard the Seaquest awaiting the arrival of the aliens as they had done previously, but this time, the aliens do not land and simply take off, with only Lucas seemingly knowing that the events had happened and everyone else's memories of the aliens arrival have been erased.

The director of this episode, Robert Wiemer, had an interesting career. He started out on a TV series called Big Blue Marble (1974-1983); American kids would be pen pals with foreign kids and share their correspondence. They would also feature letters written into the show read by the mascot “Bluey,” played by Wiemer. He also collaborated with Voyagers director, Joe Napolitano, on the show. He also directed Anna to the Infinite Power, which starred Mark Patton from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, and The Night Train to Kathmandu which starred Milla Jovovich from The Fifth Element and Resident Evil. He finally returned to TV, directing episodes of Superboy, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Seaquest. His final credit was for an episode of New York Undercover in 1998.

The Timucua language, mentioned by Tim O’Neill in this episode, was spoken by the Timucua people of northern and central Florida, and southern Georgia. In 1763 after the Seven Years War, the British took control of Florida from the Spanish and the last remaining Timucua went to Cuba where, unfortunately, the language went extinct.

Neil Giuntoli played Reinhardt. He previously starred in season 2 of the Jeff Foxworthy Show, had a role in The Shawshank Redemption and appeared in Child's Play as Eddie Caputo. We've seen him before in the Quantum Leap episode “The Leap Between The States” as Private Ryder.

The aliens are named Lemus, Booa, and Anka. The first two return in a future episode.

Joe Candelora played the cop. He also played a moustached cop in Wild Things 2 and appeared in Thunder in Paradise, the Hulk Hogan TV show, and the series Sheena.

Michael Costello played Secretary General McGrath and will be making future appearances this season and next, effectively replacing Admiral Noyce.

Sympathy for the Deep:

When Bridger received a distress call from Laura, a former girlfriend of his, the Seaquest goes to investigate the trouble. Upon arrival at an underwater colony, they meet her and Dr. Shelton who explain that for years, they've experienced no crime or psychology disorders but that incidences have suddenly risen in the last month with no explanation. Added to their problems is that everyone in the colony has been experiencing hallucinations, leaving them not knowing if what they see is real or not.

As Bridger and his team take control of the colony, they suddenly start to display criminal activity as two Seaquest guards first aggressively stop two men from robbing a store, and then let them go before turning on the shop owner and attempting to sexually assault her. Dagwood, not being human,  seems to be unaffected and saves the woman. Elsewhere, Piccolo, on a mission to swim around the colony to see if there are signs of sabotage, suddenly starts to drown as he has hallucinations that his gills are missing, luckily being saved by Darwin. And finally, Bridger and Brody engage in a heated discussion, with Dr Smith revealing that all of them, herself included, are giving into their darkest desires.

The Seaquest leaves the colony to track down a possibly related energy reading leading them to a deep sea trench and a research facility that they discovered was under the direction of Shelton. Tracking him down to the surface, he reveals he was planning to kill himself for what he and done: which was to create a machine that was able to draw negative and criminal thoughts away from the colony, with the unfortunate side effect of those things growing too powerful to contain and eventually taking on a life of their own infecting the colony with the thoughts and causing their behavior and hallucinations.

Bridger convinces Shelton to return with them to fix his problem, while Brody and Dagwood manage to maintain some small semblance of control by gathering the colonists together in a town hall and singing and telling stories to maintain their sanity.
