RW317 - SeaQuest Rewatch S02E16-17 - Alone in the Air

In this weeks episode of The SeaQuest Rewatch, Cory and Tom attack the mind and the soul as they discuss season 2 episodes 16 & 17, "Alone" and "Something in the Air."

Alone:

Psychic attacks around the world on UEO officials by a man calling himself The Avatar lead to all psychics being rounded up and placed in prison camps. Wendy is spared this fate due to her special security classification and the fact that she sensed the start of the attacks and agreed to help find the man responsible.

While at a UEO safehouse, the Avatar attacks again, this time putting secretary General McGath into a coma. The guards mistake the attack as coming from Wendy and pursue her as she escapes, eventually making her way to a former mentor, Professor Bingham, who gives her a special device he created that will amplify her psychic powers and help her face The Avatar, who again appears to Wendy and gives her the location of where he is, asking her to come join him.
Wendy takes a shuttle to find him with the Seaquest crew following close behind. The colony where the Avatar is located begins attacking due to its automatic defense systems but the SeaQuest is able to fend them off. Wendy, Ortiz, Ford, Henderson, and Lucas find the Avatar's body, along with dozens of others all in comas, however the Avatar, in the facility ever since he was involved in an automobile accident, seems to be repairing and rewriting his damaged neural pathways with his psychic powers.

Wendy decides to confront him but a strong psychic wave appears and extends outward affecting the Seaquest causing it to go haywire leading Wendy deciding to join the Avatar in his mind in order to save her crewmates.

Once inside his mind, she meets the man behind the Avatar, who believes his dreamworld to be the only thing left in existence, fated to be tortured instead of being treated, and attacking his torturers in the dream, not realizing he was affecting the real world outside. Wendy manages to finally get through to him but needs him to rebuild his own neural pathways and allow his physical body to revive due to her physical body dying while her mind has been in his psyche. The man manages to do just that in the nick of time and thus also saves Wendy as her mind returns to her body.

Raphael Sbarge played The Avatar. He’s best known for playing Dr. Hopper on Once Upon A Time and a lead role in Murder in the First. He has had so many guest roles in some hit TV series over the last 20 years, including  24, Hawaii 5-0, Blacklist, The Good Wife, Longmore, NCIS, Law and Order and  Better Call Saul. An interesting fact is that he did the voice of Dr. Zei in the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. We've seen him before in the Quantum Leap episode “Animal Frat” as Will, one of frat bros.

Joe Seneca played Prof. Bingham. This role was one of his last but he appeared in various movies and TV shows as a guest, including Malcolm X, The Blob, Mo Better Blues, The Cosby Show, Golden Girls and Doogie Howser. He was formerly a singer with a group called The Three Riffs based in New York.

Michelle T. Carter was in this episode but IMDB is not clear on who she was. She was in two episodes of Seaquest but neither credit give a character name. She has to be either Reporter #1 or Aide. Scanning through the episode I saw no sign of a reporter so she likely was an Aide but had no lines. Looking ahead to her next Seaquest episode which deals with a presidential threat, I am assuming reporters would be involved. She did play reporter Penny Jensen in the Sliders episode “The King Is Back”, in fact, her audition for Sliders is online:

Something in the Air:

The Seaquest sends a team to meet with a group of researchers at an old abandoned research facility in order to study a 6000 year old chest that was recently discovered however when the chest is opened they find it to be seemingly empty. Later that night, one of the researchers is murdered, her body completely drained of blood, while Dr. Sommers translates the markings no the chest leading them to believe they have released an evil power and until they can recapture it, they will stay in the facility.

The crew manages to access camera surveillance of the facility and sees the murder of the researcher, discovering that she was actually killed by what looks like to be Commander Ford, resulting in Doctor Crichton, the lead researcher, to attempt to shoot him, but is instead stopped by Brody.
Before anyone can react a scream elsewhere in the facility leads them to discover Dr. Sommers attacking a fellow researcher, drinking his blood ala Dracula-style. They pursue the possessed Dr. Sommers and despite minor injuries, they eventually manage to stun and secure her.

The crew concoct another plan to try and lure the evil being out, reasoning that it seems to attack when they are asleep and more easily taken over. The plan ends up not working, leaving the non corporeal being to wander the site. Another plan is decided based on more translations of the chest writings that indicate that the spirit needs air to survive and they decide to try and trap the evil spirit in the vacuum of the airlock.

Dr. Crichton, dealing with his own personal problems with his wife and their divorce, gives up on his marriage and decides to lay down and go to sleep, allowing the demon to try and possess him. The possessed Crichton runs from the crew, but with some small part of the researcher remaining aware, he grabs the ancient chest and forces himself into the airlock, closing it. With the absence of any oxygen inside, the demon finds itself drawn out of Crichton and back into the chest which magically closes, saving everyone, but with the unfortunate result of Dr. Crichton dying in the vacuum left behind.

She was also in Nick Fury: Agent of Shield as Viper/Andrea Von Strucker.

Kearny was played by Lewis Arquette. He is the father of Patricia, Rosanna, Alexis and David. He’s done a ton of TV guest spot work, including The Waltons and Rocky Road, as well as animation voices for Camp Candy (a John Candy vehicle) and Japanese animated projects like Akira and Sherlock Hound. We've seen him before as Father Muldooney in the Quantum Leap episode “The Right Hand Of God.”

RW316 - SeaQuest Rewatch S02E14-15 - Water Weaver

In this weeks episode of The SeaQuest Rewatch, Cory and Tom come face to face with gods and monster as they discuss season 2 episodes 14 & 15, "Watergate" and "Dream weaver."

Watergate:

While investigating a mountain in the ocean in the hopes of drilling into it in order to lessen the weight of it which could cause it to collapse, the SeaQuest picks up a singer on her way to a USO your to entertain the troops. Ortiz becomes infatuated with the singer, Sarah Toenin, while Henderson shows signs of jealousy, at one point forcing a kiss upon him which he rebukes. Later while Sarah performs a short concert, she stops and becomes possessed and begins speaking in tongues with a man's voice, only to suddenly stop and pass out.

Lucas’s research shows that the mountain isn't actually a mountain but rather an ancient pyramid that got covered by years and years of rocks and vegetation, giving it the illusion of a natural mountain.

As the SeaQuest nears the mountain, an apparition of a horse appears and shocks many crew members, least of which is Henderson, who after seeing it, has a vision of herself with snakes in place of her hair just like the ancient Roman goddess Medusa. Luckily, the apparition disappears and leaves behind a pile of sand.

Soon, tremors begin occurring and the SeaQuest warns the mountain inhabitants to evacuate before it collapses into the sea. As the rocks fall, the shaking opens up an ancient tomb and the SeaQuest is sucked inside from the water pressure and come face to affect with an apparition of the god Neptune and a statue that looks amazingly like Sarah.

Sarah comes up to the bridge explaining that Neptune wants her to come home, saying that he thinks she is Minerva and that Henderson is somehow channeling Medusa who thought Ortiz was Neptune, which explains why Henderson was jealous of Sarah when Ortiz showed signs of liking Sarah.  Bridger refuses to accept that they need to go with Neptune and begins heading towards Minerva’s temple, and despite being grabbed at and trapped by the giant apparition, manages to shoot off enough torpedoes to release the spirit of Minerva who approaches and embraces Neptune as the SeaQuest escapes.

Safely out of harm’s way, Sarah performs another concert in which Henderson and Ortiz get a little closer and share a kiss.

The singer in this episode, played by Dawn Robinson, is named Sarah Toenin. According to healthline.com, Serotonin is a chemical nerve cells produce. It sends signals between your nerve cells. Serotonin is found mostly in the digestive system, although it’s also in blood platelets and throughout the central nervous system. Serotonin is made from the essential amino acid tryptophan. This amino acid must enter your body through your diet and is commonly found in foods such as nuts, cheese, and red meat. Tryptophan deficiency can lead to lower serotonin levels. This can result in mood disorders, such as anxiety or depression.

Sarah was played by Dawn Robinson and while she does act from time to time, she is best known as a founding member of the R&B/pop group En Vogue. She recently appeared in an episode of Empire, but before that she hadn’t acted since 2011.

Hold On (first #2 hit single)

My Lovin (Never Gonna Get It) (more well known #2 hit)

What A Man

Charles Noel is listed as The Preacher, the hologram character. He’s only had four credits, one of which was a David Bowie movie called The Man Who Fell To Earth in which Noel played the Doctor (albeit uncredited).

Dream Weaver:

The SeaQuest finds itself disabled when a comet crashes in the ocean and seemingly disappears but actually was covering the SeaQuest in a cocoon that enabled an alien to emerge and begin hunting down its prey, a brilliant scientist named Tobias LeConte, a colleague and long time friend of the visiting astronaut Scott Keller.

While the crew attempts to hunt the creature down it does manage to get a few good attacks in against Ortiz, Dagwood, and Henderson, the last of which however was dragged away despite ONeil’s best efforts to save her. Once they get a bead on the alien they are able to flood the tubes and save Henderson, followed by the restoring of the ship’s power.

As they try and determine if the alien is still on board they see security cam footage of Henderson attempting to break through a door into the launch bay however the figure suddenly shapeshifts into the alien revealing a power they didn’t know it had. The alien/Henderson travels to Tobias’s classroom and under the ruse of a romantic interest gets close to him and then shapeshifts and attacks him, as the SeaQuest crew show up and scare it off.  Tobias then reveals that he himself is one of the shape shifting aliens who came to earth long ago as a fugitive who would not participate in his cultures practice of war and domination over all others and as a result, his people are hunting him down.

The alien/Henderson shows up again trying to get to Tobias again but she finds the crew ready for her. Instead of shape shifting, the alien just casts off the body of Henderson as it and Tobias begin a fight which ends up with them both on the roof, and eventually the alien missing his attack on Tobias and falling to its death on the ground below.

Tobias decides to leave earth because his people will continue to search for him and offers Scott Keller the chance to come with him and explore the galaxy to which he readily accepts and they leave to begin their journey.

The Triangulum Galaxy is a spiral galaxy 2.73 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Triangulum. It is catalogued as Messier 33 or NGC 598. The Triangulum Galaxy is the third-largest member of the Local Group of galaxies, behind the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy. It is one of the most distant permanent objects that can be viewed with the naked eye.

The alien was played by Karyn Malchus who also played the alien in Such Great Patience and The Fear That Follows. The second alien was played by Christinna Chauncey who played another one of the aliens in The Fear That Follows. She has a few more credits than Karyn but nothing major outside of guest spots.

Mark Hamill is Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars franchise as well as the arguably best voice of the Joker from the Batman animated series. He has racked up a ton of voice acting work over the years but we’ve seen him before in Flash ‘90 in the two episodes involving The Trickster. More recently he was the voice of Chucky in Child’s Play. He was also producer and director of Comic Book: The Movie.

RW315 - SeaQuest Rewatch S02E12-13 - Lost Everything

In this weeks episode of The SeaQuest Rewatch, Cory and Tom are unlucky with curses and unlucky in love as they discuss season 2 episodes 12 & 13, "Lostland" and "And Everything Nice."

Lostland:

While running tests in the deepest parts of the ocean, Ford, on a dive, sees a vision of an Ancient Greek soldier, followed by the discovery of an artifact that when brought aboard the SeaQuest and deciphered by O’Neil, is revealed to be a helmet from the fabled lost continent of Atlantis. Meanwhile Brody finds an artifact as well, bringing up a sword that is confirmed to be related. Based upon this information, Bridger locks down the artifacts and conceal their coordinates lest news gets out and eager treasure hunters swarm the area.

Back on the bridge, Ford starts having visions of the soldier he saw down below, followed by a vision of fire in the captain’s seat, neither of which is seen by any other bridge crew member. He reports what he saw to Bridger, but he is uncharacteristically unsympathetic and tells Ford to pull himself together, followed by ordering Lucas to get into a uniform. Elsewhere on the boat, Ortiz as well has begun acting strangely, brandishing the discovered sword and attacking crew members.

Secretary General McGath, having been notified by Bridger about the discovery, arrives with a one Professor Ernst to help verify the artifacts, but Ernst is a non-believer and pushes back against O’Neil’s findings. Lucas calls out the professor’s history of not being open to ideas and cites an incident in which he had one of his fellow professors, Professor Obatu, pushed out of their university. With Obatu being one of the leading Atlantan researchers alive, they put it a call to have him come aboard.

Meanwhile, Bridger continues to act erratic, from berating his bridge crew to physically slapping Piccolo when he hesitates following the captain’s orders. Ford, having had a pep talk from Dr Smith, ends up relieving Bridger from duty, much to Brody’s relief, as he had been trying desperately for hours to get someone to relieve Bridger of his duty due to his obvious mental condition. Brody then manages to track down Ortiz and get him to the medbay alongside Bridger where the two are experiencing deadly seizures.

Obatu arrives and reveals his connection to Atlantis and dons the helmet and sword, revealing the spirit that Ford has been seeing since he found the artifacts. Obatu explains that the artifacts were likely buried at sea after the collapse of Atlantis and the escaping survivor knew he would not be able to pass them on to his heir, something that caused the spirit of the long dead soldier to be restless, resulting in his appearing to Ford.

With the captain and Ortiz close to death; Obatu explains they have been infected with a curse due to both of them having tried on the helmet. Since Atlantis no longer exists, the only cure is for Dr Smith to access Obatu’s memories of what he has been taught about Atlantis, and to act as conduit between him and Bridger and Ortiz, allowing them to visit Atlantis and this free themselves of the curse. Before leaving the memory, Obatu shows Smith Atlantis as well and gives her a gemstone before they awaken from the trance.

Meanwhile, Erszt attempts to steal the helmet and sword but is captured and sent to the brig.  With the crew now safe, Obatu leaves the sword with Ford, explaining that he may actually have some Atlantan heritage as well, Bridger gives him a sextant to help him find the real location of Atlantis, and as he leaves, Dr Smith, physically, in real life, cradles the jewel she was given... in her mind.

And Everything Nice:

When Lucas becomes infatuated with a super intelligent girl named Sandra he met while on leave, he decides it's time for him to give up his job aboard the SeaQuest however Bridger manages to convince him to wait and talk with Sandra first and be sure that she is actually someone he could have a relationship with long term. When Lucas agrees and heads off to meet Sandra, he sees her abducted and in trying to pursue her, one of the men shoots back at him, blowing up a car, covering their escape.
An investigation is started while Lucas receives a message from Sandra asking him to meet her. However, when he shows up he is taken captive as well. A man named David uses Sandra as collateral and blackmails Lucas into going to the SeaQuest to retrieve the DeadMan’s Codes that will allow him to control SeaQuest from afar. When he returns with the codes, Lucas is shocked to see that Sandra is actually working with David and his goons, along with her father, a noted scientist named Dr Alexander Kirby, all trying to remove fascism, bureaucracy, and governmental domination.

Lucas, despondent, hands the chip over and Sandra and company implement their plans, switching their computers on and sending the signal to control the SeaQuest but Lucas cleverly managed to re-encrypt the chip with a distress signal leading the SeaQuest crew and the police to the hideout. A shootout ensues and Lucas is able to get away while Sandra and her gang of ne’er do wells are captured, leaving Lucas to ponder his broken heart alone.

RW314 - SeaQuest Rewatch S02E10-11 - End Melt

In this weeks episode of The SeaQuest Rewatch, Cory and Tom encounter laser worms and giant crocs as they discuss season 2 episodes 10 & 11, "Dead End" and "Meltdown."

Dead End:

While returning to the SeaQuest from a seminar, Lucas, Brody, O’Neil and Henderson pick up a distress signal. Answering the signal proves to be their downfall however as their sub is pulled down into a hole in the ocean floor, landing damaged, with no way out, as they are greeted by another stranded traveler, Dr Marcus Rawlings, a scientist who was mapping the ocean floor trying to prove his theory that there were tunnels under the surface when his dive pod was also drawn down into the hole by the force of the water. Added to their troubles is a giant laser shooting worm that is the apparent creator of the tunnels and none too happy about its new guests. The group manages to scare it off temporarily and they begin to work on getting Rawlings pod fixed so they can hopefully ride the next rush of water out of their prison hole.
Meanwhile the SeaQuest is using everything at its disposal to find their missing crew members, from Dr Smith’s psychic abilities to Darwin searching the seas.

Back in the depths below, Lucas manages to get the pod working but the only problem is there isn’t enough oxygen for all of them to escape. A lottery is determined to be the only fair way to decide who has to stay with Lucas being the unlucky winner. As Henderson holds Lucas as he goes to sleep, Dr Smith picks up on his thoughts and reports to Bridger that their crew members are alive. Darwin also notes the water seems saltier, something that Ford remembers is a trait of the area where Dr Rawlings went missing a few days earlier, and so the SeaQuest heads out to those coordinates.

Lucas awakes to find the water rushing in and urges everyone to get in the pod but Rawlings makes Lucas go, volunteering to remain trapped, reasoning that Lucas is younger and has a whole life ahead of him and he will tell a story of his sacrifice that will make his ex girlfriends jealous. The pod barely makes it out of the hole when SeaQuest latches onto it and pulls it into safety but Lucas doesn’t lose a moment as he realizes the Stinger could possibly get back into the hole and out again, saving Dr Rawlings.

Bridger tries to stop Lucas but with Dagwood’s help, they pilot the stinger down, rescue Dr Rawlings, and begin heading back up, but not before the super mega laser worm shows up and being following the stinger trying to capture it. As the stinger exits the hole, the SeaQuest fires its lasers at it and the stinger gets away and back on board safely.

WSKRS are down to 25% again!
Dr Rawlings was played by Gregory Paul Martin. We’ve seen before in the Sliders episode  “Dragonslide” as Garett Carr. He only has a handful of credits, the last one being a family movie called Lilly's Light in 2010. He also writes books with two about to come out, and is also a noted astrologist. He did a podcast interview earlier in 2019. He is also the eldest son of Beatles producer George Martin.

The song the guys are singing at the start of the episode is called “Doo Wah Diddy Diddy.” It was written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich and originally recorded in 1963, as "Do-Wah-Diddy", by the American vocal group The Exciters. It was made internationally famous by the British band Manfred Mann. Manfred Mann's version was released on July 10th, and spent two weeks No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in August, and two weeks at the No. 1 spot in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in October.

Meltdown:

Due to the extensive farming and mining now occurring in the ocean, the ecology of the seas have been changing, resulting in once cold waters becoming warmer, and melting frozen areas, in one case, releasing a long thought extinct reptile known as the Deinosuchus, which has migrated to the warmer waters and has begun attacking anything it sees.
Ford's father, Charles, who runs the world's largest aquacultural engineering company, contacts Johnathan, who is in good standing with a friend who has a competing mining company, and asks him to come help him with some recent problems, most notably, two of his researchers who have disappeared without a trace, and another employee who went missing after he tried to sabotage said mining company. When the remains of the employee's boat is found, they can see it's been attacked by something large.

Johnathan, on his way back in the stinger to his father's business, is suddenly attacked by the Deinosuchus and escapes only when his father manages to distract the creature with a large amount of plankton from one of his underwater reserves, all of which leads to the Seaquest being called in to help.

The croc makes it onto land to lay eggs (deemed by Dr. Smith to be infertile due to the croc's blood work), and then almost attacks Charles, but Ben, Ford's brother, manages to distract the beast and lure it away. On board the Seaquest the crew discusses their options, but unwilling to kill it, they decide that Dagwood's suggestion to put the animal back where it came from is the most humane thing to do. They use Darwin to lure the croc close to the boat and then tranquilize it before towing it back to the frozen waters and burying it under tons of snow and ice.

Meanwhile back on land, Ford, Ben, and their father all reconcile as Charles takes time off to leave Ben in charge. As a group of children play nearby, one of them goes to grab an errant ball, not noticing another nest of eggs laid by the Deinosuchus, which starts to move, ready to hatch (despite what Dr. Smith thought, thereby dooming the world to be overrun by Deinosuchus in just a few years).
