RW435 - Dawson's Creek S03E18-19 - Never Stolen

In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek Rewatch, Cory and Tom spring into the good old days as they discuss of season 3 episodes 18 & 19, "Neverland" and "Stolen Kisses."

Neverland:

Written by: Maggie Friedman

Directed by: Patrick Norris

Original airdate: April 5, 2000 (1 month break)

Synopsis:

After Pacey and Joey find themselves locked in a deep kiss, Joey breaks away, shocked and yelling about how his kissing her could have a huge impact on their lives, leaving Pacey to apologize and try to play it off as just an impulse. He manages to eventually get her to let him drive her home albeit in silence.

Joey talks with Bessie about the incident while Pacey talks with Doug. While Bessie tries to be supportive, Joey isn’t too accepting, but Pacey does take Doug’s advice to try and talk to Dawson about what happened, preferably in a place that would mean something and cause Dawson to remember their strong friendship.

At school, Jen is talking to Henry about finding out his birthday is the next day, but he says he already has plans with family. Jen understands but then they’re interrupted by a random friend who stops by to say that they can’t wait for his party, leaving Jen hurt and angry as she storms off.

Andie and Jack talk about Ethan coming by this weekend to spend time with Jack and hang out, when she reveals that their father actually cancelled his business trip and will be around as well.

Pacey and Dawson head off to the woods where they built a fort when they were kids, but they’re interrupted by mentee Buzz and his two friends who got permission to join them for the camping trip.

Mr McPhee comes home to see Ethan saying hello to Jack. Mr. McPhee tries to tell Jack to send him home but Jack refuses to do so. As the two play chess and chat, Mr. McPhee tries to hang out with them but Jack shows his annoyance, telling him to go spy on Andie instead.

Andie meanwhile begins girls night with Jen and Joey consisting of manicures and beauty masks and food, before they decide to go roller skating. While there, Jen runs into Henry who is having a full blown party with lots of people there.

Dawson tells the young boys a scary story before bedtime, and afterwards Pacey finds a time capsule the two of them buried long ago, as they open it and relive their past. As they drift off to sleep Dawson tells Pacey he is thankful for having him and Joey in his life.

Ethan tries to smooth things over with Mr McPhee inviting him to dinner with him and Jack, and the two bond over classic cars, even heading over to a classic car museum all together.

Back at the skating rink, Henry reveals that he was embarrassed to have Jen come to his party because it was such a child-like birthday party, but Jen says she loves his childlike innocence and that it helps her to get in touch with hers, ending with the two making up.

At the museum, Jack finally gets fed up and pulls Ethan aside and asks him why he invited his father, saying that he hasn’t been a real father to him at all the past year. Mr McPhee overhears it and heads home ahead of them, alone.

Back at Jen's place, Joey reveals what happened with Pacey and Jen says she isn’t surprised while Joey tries to play it off as not meaning anything. Jen counters that if it really meant nothing then she shouldn’t be so confused and upset.

Ethan tells Jack that he needs to let go of his anger at how his dad treated him and move on. Jack goes down to his father and starts to talk with him while Mr McPhee reveals that his friend at work had a son who has dropped out of college numerous times and been in trouble with the law as well, all of which made him realize that he has a good son that he doesn’t know at all but wants to, as the two of them sit down to play chess together.

The next morning, Pacey runs into Joey while taking Buzz back home and he apologizes for his impulse and says it didn’t mean anything while Joey agrees that she overreacted and they can still be friends. As Pacey heads off with Buzz, obviously saddened, Joey looks after him as he walks away, looking somewhat disappointed herself.

Dawson's Trivia:

Maggie Friedman is a writer and producer for Dawson’s Creek. She got her start on Kevin Williamson’s previous series Wasteland. She’s worked on a few other series since working here, but most notably, she helped develop the series Witches of East End, and created the series Firefly Lane which debuted just this year (2021).

The only guest stars, Buzz’s bud #1 and Henry’s football pal, don’t really have many credits, just a handful of things here and there.

Stolen Kisses:

Written by: Tom Kapinos

Directed by: Greg Prange

Original airdate: April 26, 2000 (another 3 week break)

Synopsis:

Dawson and Joey plan their usual (?) trip for spring break to visit his Aunt Gwen, someone who has long been a part of their childhood lives, a free spirit of a woman who was once married but left her uptight lawyer husband for a crazy like-minded painter, who recently died of a heart attack. Pacey joins the two with one of their old friends who had moved away, Will Krudski. Andie shows up as well, while Jack stays behind to spend time with their dad. After arriving at Gwen's house and getting settled in after the long day of traveling, the gang falls asleep in various locations around the bedroom, leaving Pacey and Joey sharing a bed, most unhappy.

Meanwhile Henry starts work at Leery’s Fresh Fish, while new waitress Shelley starts taking an interest in him. Shelley tries several times to flirt with Henry, but she keeps getting interrupted by Jen. Everything comes to a head however when Shelley tells a very surprised Henry that he can have her anytime he wants to have sex, which he tells Jen, leaving Jen angry and telling Henry to do whatever he wants before she storms off. Jen decides to confront Shelley in the middle of the restaurant, yelling at her, surprising Shelley who hadn't realized Henry was taken. Henry finds Jen, crying after the whole ordeal, and she admits that she was jealous due to years of not letting people get close to her emotionally.

Elsewhere in the restaurant, Mitch and Gail meet an old friend of theirs, Megan, who came back into town with news that her husband Tom had passed away. Gail reminisces about how Tom was Mitch’s best man and gave a wonderful speech at the wedding. Gail tries to get Mitch to think back and remember but he refuses. Later however, he changes his mind and watches a video of their wedding day and, like Gail, realizes that their troubles really have been trivial and the two embrace and kiss.

Back at Aunt Gwen’s place, Andie interrogates Will in a slightly flirty manner, and then with Pacey hustles some wannabe pool sharks. Dawson and Joey briefly recap the events of their lives of the past few years while Gwen manages to find a painting she did of Dawson and Joey together as kids. Will talks about how his father treats his mother terribly, giving that as the reason he came to visit Pacey, away from the stress of that relationship.

Joey and Dawson sit and talk about their relationship, with Dawson commenting on how they make sense of each other’s lives, reasoning that growing up doesn't have to mean growing apart. Joey comments on Dawson’s eternally optimistic mood while Dawson begins to wonder aloud why they actually aren’t together anymore, before getting interrupted by Pacey.

As the gang gets down to their traditional karaoke with Aunt Gwen, Pacey finds himself unable to keep hiding his feelings and talks with Joey, kissing her again. He tells her that he came on the trip because he likes her and wants to spend time with her, while Joey reveals that she felt something when the two ended up sleeping in the same bed together. Pacey kisses her but Gwen shows up, interrupting them. Aunt Gwen gives Joey the advice to talk with Dawson and tell him about her and Pacey kissing, lest he accidentally discover their budding romance. Joey tries to do just that when Gwen comes in and interrupts them to give Dawson the painting of Joey and him together, hoping it will bring him back to the things that made him a believer, that his dreams are an asset, and not a weakness.

Pacey and Joey later talk, with Pacey saying he feels incredible and terrible at the same time, and that he can't keep doing this without Joey showing him what she wants as well, ending with Joey pulling Pacey to her as she kisses him.

Dawson's Trivia:

Megan was played by Susan Williams, who has had a number of bit roles over the years, but most recently had a two episode stint in Doom Patrol as the wife of Flex Mentallo. She was also in an episode of Stranger Things, and had various other roles in shows like Amazing Stories, Dynasty, Stan Against Evil (demons attacking small town), Vampire Diaries, Drop Dead Diva, and One Tree Hill.

Will was played by Rodney Scott. He’s had guest roles in shows like The Unit and Ghost Whisperer. He was Danny, a character in some of the seasons of American Dreams (1960’s family drama, heavy focus on pop songs of the time), as well as playing the son of the lead character (played by Craig T. Nelson), Jack Mannion Jr, in The District (police drama set in Washington DC). He was a main cast member in Young Americans (also starring Boone from Lost, Ian Somerhalder and Kate Bosworth and a spin off of sorts from Dawson’s); the show is about an elite school in Connecticut, and lasted 8 episodes. He also played David Cassidy in Come On, Get Happy: The Partridge Family Story. In 2009, he played his last credit, he starred in The Strip, a movie about employees in a low end electronics store who must face the reality of growing up when one of their friends gets married.

Aunt Gwen was played by Julie Bowen, best known for her role of Claire on 11 seasons of Modern Family. My first exposure to her was as Jack’s wife on Lost. She had success with the show Ed as a lead with Tom Cavanaugh, and was a lead in later seasons of Boston Legal. She was a lead in Rob Lowe’s Knife Fight (a political strategist juggling three clients' questions whether or not to take the high road as the ugly side of his work begins to haunt him). She was the principal in Kids in America (student vs teacher battle), and appeared in The Last Man On Planet Earth (in a world ruled and populated only by women, a young female scientist creates a male human being, genetically enhanced to refrain from violence). She did also have short runs of episodes of ER and Weeds, and had a short lived series called Extreme (in the Rockies, a Search and Rescue patrol deals with love and romance as they do their jobs, facing all kinds of daredevils living the extreme). She was also in Horrible Bosses, and An American Werewolf In Paris. She had a role in Multiplicity as well. Her most recent roles include doing voices for Duck Tales and Tangled: The Series, The Fallout (a movie about the aftermath of a school tragedy), and Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween. Coincidentally she just guest hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live this past week. Also of note is that Julie is 30 (1970 March) at the time of this episode, and Meredith Monroe (1969 December) is 3 months older than her.

Sarah Lancaster played Shelley. Her first role was Rachel in three seasons of Saved By The Bell, The New Class. She’s been the lead in a lot of movies you’ve never heard of. Most recently she starred in Blue Ridge with Johnathan Schaech (murder in a small town refuels a fued between families). Before that she was in Christmas on Holly Lane and The Stray (guardian angel type dog that is supposedly based on a true story). That same year she was in The Terror Of Hallows Eve (a bullied kid wishes revenge via the Terror Of Halloween). Also, ‘Tis The Season (a small town girl who moved to NY to pursue her dreams returns home for the holidays, only to realize that maybe her dreams aren’t miles away, but right in her hometown). Other movies include Along Came A Nanny, Christmas In The Smokies, and Looking For Mr Right, to name just a few of the many many more. She was a lead in the show Chuck (computer geek gets government secrets downloaded into his brain). She was a main cast member in What About Brian (friends in various stages of relationships), a lead in Dr Vegas (Doctor played by Rob Lowe who works in an old school casino in Vegas), Everwood (main cast in several seasons of this show about a widower moving to small mountain town with his kids), and was in 13 episodes of Undressed (MTV show about sexual relations involving different genders, orientations, races. 225 episodes over 3 years).

Hank Troscianiec was in the Dawson’s Creek episode “Cinderella Story” as Wannabe Chef. In this episode he is credited as Hank The Chef.

Classic Creek Critiques:

Epihphany says: I've read that they will not maitain a relationship "for the good of the group". What is the point of that? Any "damage" is already done! When I was 15/16 I wouldn't have denied myself someone I cared for and had an attraction to "for the good" of my friends (unless of course, the person was seeing someone). Bah! Actually even now (at 28) I'd still follow my heart/lust rather

than please my friends. It's just dumb for them to do that to Joey & Pacey, but apart from that what sort of message is it to say that you should forgo your own happiness and defer to your friends about what you should and shouldn't do?

Kim close disagrees: actually i'd disagree, i am 16, and basically all you do is to impress and to be accepted, 'if your not like this..' and 'if you don't hang with this person...' and 'if you don't go out with person..', unless you are really strong minded, and determined, you will follow the crowd, impress your friends etc. i like being excepted into a group, as most people so i will do things to impress them, like have a boyfriend cause everyone else will, now i've found the man i love and no friend is going to change that, he basically comes before everyone, but most 15/16 year olds are out there to impress.

AnDrEa AkA ChErRy says: I think when Joey gets around Dawson she's a whole different charachter....way to emotional about anything and everything.....but a romance with Pacey could be the better of the two....I mean she looks like she feels 10 x's more free with Pacey....and I think in the end thats the relationship the writers should stick with, but you know they probably won't. After all it is DAWSON'S creek, and how else are they gonna keep us interested in the all mighty Dawson, with out the all ultra sweet Joey by his side?

Jazz responds: I say, let Jo and Pace stay together.... Get rid of Dawson....... And change the show's name to "Capeside Creek" or something...... I really have a problem with Dawson.. He is mega- annoying! :P.

Missy says: I like Dawson okay, but they should have named the show "Capeside Creek" to begin with.Naming a show after one charater is just too risky.

Jenn H says: I hope Pacey and Joey stay together. I think it makes the show more exciting. Dawson is old news. He is so whiney. But I think the writers will drag this story line on for a while before we know who Joey will end up with....

David responds: Maybe with Joey and Pacey getting together this will let Dawson and Jack get together

Mickie89 says: I was thinking after reading some of the ideas lately about Joey and Pacey. Sure, the obvious thing would be to not take this pre-relationship thing anywhere, but on the other hand, look at Dawson. He has been in love with Joey, then dated Jen, then realized his love for Joey and dated her, now is not dating either of them, but the group is as strong as ever. Now, my question is: Why should Pacey be given any less of an opportunity? He obviously has a strong attraction toward Joey. Why should he stifle his attraction just to please the "group"? I think it should be a personal thing between him and Joey. Dawson doesn't want to date her anymore, they are great friends. I don't think that he has a "if I can't have her, no one will" attitude about this. I think that he would be very  supportive, if not happy for them. You could tell that he thought something was brewing between them when he saw them re-painting the mural in the school hallway.

Aesha responds: I, for one, am a total Joey/Pacey supporter. I didn't like it at first, but theirs seems like a more "adult" relationship than that of the Dawson/Joey coupling. I really think that Pacey and Jen are the most adult of the group... they've grown quite a bit... but I digress. I think from the spoilers I've heard (though who knows if they are true)........................................... that Dawson does not take this well at all. I thought today that Pacey was supposed to tell Dawson about his feelings, but leave out the kiss... it said that in the paper, on the satellite... but there was no mention of his feelings. He brushed by it, and almost got there when the kids arrived, but didn't quite make it.

Pussycat likes Henry: I'll be the first one to admit that Henry is a bit strange, but damn if he doesnt get to ya. When I watch him and Jen together I get butterflies in my stomach (or is that indigestion - lol)! His lips drive me crazy and for some strange reason, I think he's just one of those weird guys that just happens to be good in bed. Ok, I'll take my medicine now...lol

Shaz Ann transcribed an interview from a magazine: Hi,

I thought you might find this interview interesting that's in an

entertainment magazine we have in the UK called Heat... There's also a

really nice picture of Meredith with it, but I don't have a scanner!

Handy Andie

Unfaithful, unhinged and unhappy, Andie's been through it all. A weary

Meredith Monroe takes time out from Dawson's Creek to cry on Paige Schuppan'

s shoulder.

You're now one of the most famous mental patients on TV. Do you think Andie

would be boring if she wasn't a psycho?

MM - Oh yeah! But she's great fun to play.

Andie also cheated on Pacey. Is that ever OK in your book?

MM - [Firmly] No, it's not. You should be completely honest with a person

and tell them what you want.

Honestly speaking then, who out of Pacey and Dawson would you go for?

MM - Oh gosh, I guess I'd have to say a mixture of both.

That is such a cop-out answer...

MM - [Swirming] Well, Dawson's a bit [screws nose up]...

So, its Pacey...

MM - Yeah, you saw right through it. OK, I would marry my brother Jack.

If he weren't your brother would you snog him?

MM - Yeah, man! Sure. He's the cool, quiet type. But hey, he's not my

brother.

So the first time you snogged Josh Jackson, it'd be fair to say you didn't

have to act too hard?

MM - Everybody asks me that. You know what, it was actually quite awkward to

go up to someone and say, "Hey, nice to meet you. Shall we kiss now?"

Can we just say, James Van Der Beek looks a lot older than 16...

MM - Well, we're all playing younger characters. But I think it's fine as

long as you can still appreciate the issues that are important.

We heard that James shaves between takes...

MM - All the boys do! Not between the takes but during the day they

definitely do.

Dawson's Creek is popular because it deals with real issues, but do you

really think kids talk like that?

MM - Some kids, yeah; a lot of kids, no. But if our show just had kids

saying two syllables - like yeah, no and awesome - would anybody watch it?

Maybe not. We don't have proms in the UK. What are they like?

MM - Well, over here you can't drink until you're 21, so until then everyone

is obsessed with getting it. Proms are basically about going to a pre-party

or an after-party and getting trashed. Horrible! Then you go dancing.

Do you get a lot of moral flack about sex issues on the show?

MM - We do a bit. But how many teenagers are having sex? It's like,

"Hello!?" Twelve-year-old girls are getting pregnant, so sex is a reality.

If you don't want to address the problem with your children then they're

just going to do it behind your back. But I've also had people come up to me

and say "thank you" because from watching the show they can find out what's

important to their kids. OK, I'm off my soapbox now.

Katie Homes is Josh Jackson's ex, and now he's seeing Brittany Daniels who

plays Eve. Is there any on set tension between the two?

MM - Oh, no. None at all. Josh and Brittany didn't start dating until

everything with Katie was over.

Have you ever fallen into Dawson's Creek?

MM - No! Actually, I hate to say it, but Dawson's Creek isn't even in our

area. It's in North Carolina though.

How about Dawson and Joey. Should they just do it?

MM - Yes! Exactly. We all laugh about it. We're always throwing around some

crazy ideas about how we should all just get together!

Would it spoil the show if they did the biz?

MM - Well, you want them to get together so badly that you can feel the

sexual tension. When they kissed for the first time is was amazing, but then

it was like "OK, this is boring"

CJMAXP (Chris) is unhappy: Ok, Like everyone else I think this season has sucked for a lot of reasons (no long term plot, poor writing, etc). But I have to say that Joey is a bitch. She is sullen, nasty, bitter and generally a pain in the ass. She is hot, but man she is just unpleasant. Why the hell would Pacey or Dawson attracted to her? Really? This could be coming from the fact that I relate more with Dawson and I think Pacey is a poor excuse for a friend. Ok so he is attracted to Joey, but he didnt have to act on it and even after he acted on it once he didnt have to pursue it. (Switch to theatre of the absurd) This would be the perfect time for the Buffy/Dawsons Crossover I have been dreaming of...the slayer takes the angst out of capeside.

Howard Rappaport disagrees: Nope, she's a confused girl, going through massive angst. She just  wants to make everyone else happy, and rarely looks ever at herself. She's the most precious  innocent thing in the show, Pacey is a close second. What has Pacey ever done. He's got a little attitude, but he's an innocent kid under everything, almost as much as Joey. Pacey is the only person who can express his feelings so simply, and he's the only one who can get the same from Joey. Pacey's attracted to her for the simple reason that she's the most precious/simple/cute/wonderful thing in the show...in his life. Obviously you've never been in a situation like this, or know anyone who has (and just haven't asked them). He's not attacted to Joey just physically...that's easy to hold back. She's the most perfect thing he could ever imagine. It's that simple. He's not just in love, he's met his love (or at least what he has created as perfect love).

Bashton is with Howard: As much as I enjoyed your Buffy reference I must say you are underestimating the power of Pacey! He IS a good friend...that's what made the plot interesting...he is TORN. I think you should re-consider the depth of the message that was conveyed in tonight's episode....progress and closure. Sometimes friends drift apart, get new ideas or just drift in general....but tonight's message was about how underneath change you still have the foundation of friendship. Of course Pacey is still a good friend! He's the ultimate friend because he's held his feelings in so long. Besides....Dawson is lost in himself. Something had to make him realize this eventually. That which does not kill us makes us stronger, even if your best friends are changing without you.

Babs has thoughts: Delurking here to share. First off, what was with that Daydream Believer deluge? First we have Dawson and Joey singing it on karaoke, and then it's Mitch and Gayle's wedding song, and then it plays while Joey and Pacey kiss. Their intent might have been to unite the three stories with the song, but as DB was more of Dawson and Joey thing, wouldn't it be better to give Pacey and Joey their own song? I mean, it'd be good to separate them musically from the couple known as D and J. The Mitch and Gayle thing is silly. Either get divorced or get back together. Make up your minds people. This is the wishy-washyested show at the mo. Loved the aunt. Want to be the aunt. Was waiting for her to say, "Live, Live, life's a banquet and most sons-of-bitches are starving." If you don't know the reference, I'm not going to tell you. I've tried to like Henry, but I don't. There's something about him that bothers me. Like Jen; give her more to do than counsel Pacey and Joey. I love Pacey, but Joey's whininess gets to me. Plus, I'm sure she'll choose Dawson if it comes down to it. At which point, I wash my hands of the whole show. Dawson's a schmuck, always wanting to be center of attention. I personally can't wait until they drop the bomb. Though that does mean he'll emote or something. Pacey deserves more than being the second choice. I liked him and Jen together, or him and Andie.

Boss6Sr is on board: I think tonight's episode was remarkably better. I think the last couple of episodes that reflect the budding relationship or Pacey and Joey, and basically leaving Dawson out in the cold, mark a new standard for DC. Yes, they tried this already in season 1 with the whole Pacey/Joey scenario, and it had it's anit-climatic results. I wasn't too sure back then that I wanted Dawson and Joey to get together, we can say i was more of a Pacey/Joey supporter. But then when D&J got together, and we saw the whole angst ridden show of how this girl finally got her dream and it just got sucked down the drain, it made sense that the two main characters didn't make sense together. Then this season when Pacey started pursuing Joey, I was like, Not again! But now it sort of makes sense. Everyone is tired of Dawson and Joey. It was a mistake to begin with. That was the basis of the show. The girl got her wish and it wasn't what she expected. So now, with the girl getting a dream that isn't even in her REM sleep, it makes the characters, and the show a little more interesting. I just hope everything doesn't get all confusing with the main characters hating each other. This season had a really rocky start with the departure of Kevin Williamson. But I think they are actually starting to get back to where all us DC fans want it to be. It's bringing back that season 1 feel and I just hope the last 4 episodes are worth waiting for.

KevinS replies: Good Jen ep too. I think Jen+Henry make a good couple. They both can be  unpredictible. Their pasts are opposite of each other. Jen's is wild and Henry's past that we know of is pretty tame.

Melissa agrees: it had some excellent moments especiall when Pacey told Joey to Look at him that was (_) im lost for words.......I think this episode was better than the last one when he first kissed  her… I cant wait for next weeks though it looked as though we see pacey cry. even though I thought at first Dawson and Joey belonged together and I really really enjoyed Pacey and Andie together,, Im begining to see some chemistry between Joey and Pacey especially during tonights episode.. well just my thoughts

Howard Rappaport too: Beginning to???? It's in full swing.

Aesha is happy about it: I thought this episode was great... mostly except for the scenes with Dawson in them. The Joey/Pacey scenes were great... Josh and Katie were soooo good in them. James doesn't even deserve to share a stage with those two. Well, at least, Josh... I have mixed feelings about Katie sometimes. I need to see her in some less-angsty-teen show. Pacey has met Aunt Gwen once? And has never been invited to her house for spring break? Katie Holmes is gorgeous. But when she smiles, she does this crinkle her nose thing that drives me insane. I was confused for a little bit at the beginning. I assumed that Mitch & Gayle's old friend was Will's mother, since they both happened to appear in Capeside at the same time, with no word or anything from them for years. So I was quiet confused when he was telling Andie about his dad. I'm glad Andie is over Pacey- maybe she can help Dawson. I just find myself wondering sometimes, if Dawson is really in love with Joey- or just in love with being in love with her. I was so glad when Joey told him that growing up seems to mean growing apart. Aunt Gwen bothered me a bit. I didn't like how she kept trying to push Joey and Dawson together. It's none of her business... if she sees they're not together, maybe she shouldn't ask. At least, not both of them together. I liked the parallel between Gwen's feelings for her first husband and her love for her second, and Joey's feelings for Dawson vs. her feelings for Pacey. I've got a lot of posts to catch up on, so that's it for the time being.

Kevins replies: I thought Aunt Gwen would be older.

Boss6Sr agrees: me too!

Aesha: I agree. When they were chatting about Gwen in the cafe or whatever, they made it sound like she was 45, 50 years old going after some 25 year old guy. But she looked 30, tops. Crazy... does anyone have any idea how old she was supposed to be? And did they not mention it, or did I miss it when they said who's sister she was?
