RW429 - Dawson's Creek S03E12-13 - Weekend Lights

In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek Rewatch, Cory and Tom get comfy and stare at the sky as they discuss of season 3 episodes 12 & 13, "A Weekend in the Country" and "Northern Lights."

A Weekend in the Country:

Written by: Jeffrey Stepakoff

Directed by: Michael Katleman

Original airdate: January 19, 2000

Synopsis:

Joey, worried about her and Bessie’s newly founded Bed and Breakfast going bust due to no customers, confides in Dawson and Pacey about the stress. Her sister feels the pressure as well, given that she is considering taking a mortgage out on their house in order to keep the business afloat, something that Joey is adamantly against. She complains to Bessie about it, but she reminds her younger sister that SHE is the adult and is the one responsible for the decision.

Meanwhile, Andie talks with Jack about moving back  home, implying her father would like him to, but doesn’t want to ask himself, leaving Jack cold to the idea. Later, Andie finds out that Jack, Jen, and Grams have private in-jokes, leaving her jealous of the family that Jack has created for himself.

Henry talks with Jen about having dinner with him, avoiding outright asking her so that she won’t have an opportunity to say no. When Jen says she will think about it, Henry leaves, elated.

Pacey takes things into his own hands and works some magic to get the leading Bed and Breakfast reviewer in the world, Fred Fricke, to come by and stay for a review. Joey is shocked he would do this when they aren’t truly ready for such a high ranking guest, but it’s too late as the writer has arrived, with a very cold attitude.

Luckily Pacey has managed to whip up some other guests to help the Potter B&B feel more active, as Grams checks in with her “grandchildren” Jen, Andie, and Jack, and Mitch arrives with Gail posing as a happily married couple, much to Dawson’s surprise.

With Fricke looking down his nose at the B&B, Pacey tries his best to overcome the problems in the B&B such as overflowing toilets and broken furnaces. Dawson confronts his parents about their charade, getting upset with them. Mitch talks to him later and tries to explain that while it’s a very thin tightrope that he and Gail are walking, they are trying to be friends, especially given the fact that Mitch learned that Gail’s job prospects have been drying up. Dawson later apologizes to his mother for his outburst and she helps Dawson see the situation in a different light by pointing out his own relationship with Joey.

Bessie and Joey butt heads as Bessie tries to slyly make a move on Fricke in order to garner a good review. Joey laments that at her age she has all of the responsibilities of an adult, but none of the authority.

Mitch counsels Pacey, with Pacey feeling like he’s messing everything up but with Mitch assuring him that Joey and Bessie are very lucky to have him in their lives, commending him on his commitment and ingenuity.

Jen and Dawson have a talk where Jen asks him about what Dawson was scared of when they were starting to get to know each other. Dawson talks about how anything unknown can be scary, especially since he had never known anyone with the great amount of life experience that Jen had had. He admits that he was wrong though, and that the only thing more beautiful than Jen, is the person she is underneath.

With Fricke out of the house for dinner, everyone else gathers around a fireplace that Grams lit when the men couldn’t figure it out. She tells a story of how she would sit with Jen’s grandfather by the fire as he read to her, which in turn leads everyone to recount some of their favorite memories that have been intertwined with smells, prompted by the scent of the burning wood. Joey tells her tale last, recounting how her mother’s great dream was to have a B&B someday, as Fricke listens in from the doorway, realizing that everyone there was not a true stranger to the Potter household. Joey heads to bed despondent.

The next morning she wakes to see everyone in the kitchen, dancing and helping with breakfast, laughing and having a great time. Fricke sits at the head of the table and tells Joey that while the heat didn’t work last night, this was by far the warmest place he’s ever stayed, commenting on how great the pancakes were. Joey, confused at how Bessie suddenly perfected her recipe after many failed attempts, is surprised to see Bodie come walking into the room. Bessie and Joey share a moment, with the older sister understanding Joey’s defiance at a mortgage, and they bond over an old guest book their mother had bought years ago with Bessie and Joey’s youthful signatures on the first page.

Mitch talks with Gale, offering some advice after hearing her memory the night before about opening a restaurant, and he gives her the address of a place that could fit the bill for her. Jen visits Henry and she reveals to him her past indiscretions and is surprisingly ok with everything, saying that those things are a part of her, and he’s thankful for who she is, impressing her.

Dawson thanks Pacey for taking care of Joey, and commenting at how much his attitude has changed, leaving Pacey to try and go back to his glib jokey self and cracking some jokes about Joey. Jack approaches Grams and Jen and tells them that he needs to move back home, not for his father, but because just as they were there for him when he needed someone to care, he needs to be there for Andie in her time of need too.

As the house is empty, Joey falls asleep on the couch as Pacey covers her with a blanket, and sits by the fire near her, watching her sleep, just as Grams said she herself would do with her husband years ago, saying it was a true sign of being in love with someone.

Dawson's Trivia:

We’ve seen director Michael Katleman before. His second job as a TV director was on the Quantum Leap episode “Runaway,” where Sam joins a family as the little brother, and it’s thought that their mother abandons them during a 4th of July vacation. He’s a pretty solid “hired gun” for TV directing, but he also directed the 2007 crocodile creature-feature Primeval.

Kelly Jones Gabriele was the loan officer. You may have seen her in Robin Hood: Men In Tights as Buxom Lass. She was in a movie called The Three Lives of Karen, but only as a supporting actress, but alongside Nina Repeta as well. She’s done some other TV movies and TV shows, but all of them have her pretty far down the cast list.

Lisa Mae Fincannon played “girl”, and this was her only acting credit, but went on to be a casting director and worked in the casting department on almost 200 movies. Jeffrey Stepakoff played “boy”, and he only has 5 credits as producer, and 12 as writer, and just this episode as his single acting credit. His acting credits include Home Movies on Dawson’s Creek and he will be writing several more over the next few seasons as well. Other writing credits include Major Dad, The Wonder Years, Simon & Simon, and Hyperion Bay.
The opening song and scene is from The Big Chill, 1983 (Kevin Kline, Tom Berenger, JoBeth Williams, Jeff Goldblum, Glenn Close, and William Hurt). It's about a friend who committed suicide and a group talks about their feelings on it and issues they had with said friend and each other.

Northern Lights:

Written by: Gina Fattore

Directed by: Jay Tobias

Original airdate: January 26, 2000

Synopsis:

With opening night of the play looming, Pacey continues working on his lines with Joey, but begins to freak out when she reveals she can’t be there for opening night due to a date with AJ, who is coming into town to take her to a special Northern Lights viewing party.

At school, Nikki finds Dawson and confronts him about dropping film class, admonishing him for not giving her a heads up, as they were supposed to pitch their movie idea to the class. She had also wanted to get some ideas for him for their project together, calling him the most creative person in the class.

As opening night arrives, Andie begins to panic as it’s revealed that Broderick has a kidney stone and cannot be there. He leaves everything in Andie’s hands, commending her on the work she has done.

Meanwhile, Jen tries to catch up with Henry as he tries to avoid her, but she finally manages to get the jump on him, confronting him. Henry reveals he has been avoiding her so that she doesn’t have the opportunity to cancel their date, something she assures him she won’t do, but would rather just like to postpone the date, due to needing to attend the play to support Pacey. Henry volunteers to go with her, much to Jen’s apparent displeasure.

Meanwhile Bessie helps Joey get ready for her date when Pacey shows up, a nervous wreck about the play. Joey tries to calm him down and after Pacey invites her to the after party, she says she can’t make any promises but will try. As AJ arrives, Pacey tries to tell Joey that AJ is an operator, detailing the moves he will use, which AJ does in due time, as Joey gives Pacey an annoyed look.

At the viewing party, AJ is the perfect gentleman, and the two take a walk away from the crowd as cloud cover has stopped the viewing of the Northern Lights temporarily. The two have a talk about Joey’s future, and how she feels like she has different sides to her, the side that is for other people to make them happy and proud, and then her own personal side. AJ begins to describe some of the things he’s learned about Northern Lights, which lead to a kiss between them, and Joey suddenly feeling nervous and saying she actually needs to leave.

As Andie runs around trying to ensure everything is set for the play, Dawson chats with Pacey about the play, trying to psych him up for it while Pacey reveals that Joey isn’t here because of her date, something that startles Dawson.

Meanwhile out in the audience, Henry is surprised that Jen didn’t wait outside the theater for him like they had planned, and even shocked when she shows that she brought Grams along to sit in between the two of them.

While Pacey was nervous to go on, almost making the understudy go on instead, he heads out and nails the part, the play a great success. However at the after party, his mood is much more dour as he wishes that Joey could have come.

Dawson and Nikki talk, with Dawson recounting a time when he was a kid and couldn’t understand how a teenager in the seat in front of him would rather kiss and make out with his date rather than watch and be amazed at the spectacle of Jurassic Park. He knows now that he isn’t that kid anymore, but he is also not that teenager either but a third person, trying to figure out who he is.

Joey shows up to the after party and her and Pacey chat, trading some barbs, and Pacey’s sprints seem raised, until he sees that AJ has arrived, looking for Joey.

Meanwhile, Henry has climbed to the rafters and begins making a declaration to Jen, making her say out loud in front of everyone that she is embarrassed to be seen with him. Jen gets him down and the two talk, with Jen telling him he has to stop these grand gestures, and him saying that he just says what is on his mind and encourages her to do the same, after which she kisses him quickly, followed by Henry kissing her again.

Inside Andie goes to Pacey and the two fully make up for what happened between them, now reuniting as friends once again as Joey talks with AJ, explaining that she doesn’t know about so many of the things that he talks about, feeling inferior. AJ assures her that he’s not an expert on everything, most importantly that he isn’t an expert on pretty girls and their dreams.

Dawson waits for Joey when she returns home and the two chat, with Joey saying that as lost as he may feel, he just needs to find his true north to guide him, as they both look up at the suddenly revealed Northern Lights.

Dawson's Trivia:

Director Jay Tobias mostly works in assistant and second unit directing for television these days. He only has 11 directing credits, all in television as well. Early in his career though, he was a trainee for the Director’s Guild of America on films such as Splash, Moscow on the Hudson, and Brewster’s Millions. From there, he went on to be an assistant director on many films and TV series, including Back to the Future Part III, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and The Crow (to name some highlights from an extensive list).

Corie (Pacey’s scene partner) was Maribeth Ayers, and she only has four credits to her name, one of which is Arbor Day: The Musical (old wounds begin to heal as a group of people write and produce an irreverent musical about 9/11). Another credit is A Trivial Dispute, a short about two roommates who have an argument about a repulsive stain on their beloved blanket. Her other remaining credit is for All The Real Girls in which she plays Noel’s Friend. Noel is played by Zooey Deschanel, with Paul Schneider, Patricia Clarkson, and Danny McBride.

Classic Creek Critiques:

A post about a new Greg Berlanti film called The Broken Hearts Club. From Sundance: Every few years, a film appears that portrays the relationships among a group of friends, capturing the exact spirit of the time (Diner, The Return of the Secaucus Seven, and The Big Chill, just to name a few). The tradition continues with The Broken Hearts Club. In this debut feature by Greg Berlanti, the twist is that the characters are all gay. Dean Cain as Cole and Andrew Keegan (who was on 7th Heaven as a reoccuring character).

Xing-a-Paragraph is on board with Jacey/Poey: Pacey deserves Joey. He's supposed to be a screw-up, but his character is overwhelming good. I'm sick of watching Dawson pretend not to want Joey. Maybe Dawson walks the dog too much.

ChaccoBaby1 agrees: Grams said in tonights episode of Dawson's Creek. (1/19/00).

"You know you love someone when you can spend the entire night sitting there by

the fire, just watching them sleep." Well...the last shot was of Pacey, sitting the fire, watching Joey sleep..... Hmm.....any thoughts?!

Daria is jivin’ with Jacey: OH MY GOD! I was moved near tears at the end of this episode.

I, a diehard Dawson/Joey fan, got choked up watching Pacey watch Joey sleep by the fire.... this light in my head went "Oh my God, he loves her!" :) It surprised me, too. But after Grams story about loving a person when you can watch them sleep all nite, I guess I became a little bit sappy after all. If they have him sing "On My Own," I might just repeat my Season One sobfest ;) Ok, I'll shut up now.

Whitney disagrees: Pacey + Joey = BAD! I just can't stand Joey. Pacey and Andie need to get back together. BAH! I bet Joey (grrr!) is not going to have the same feelings that Pacey has for her (why does he love her?) and she ends up breaking his heart (baaaad!). Then, just then, MAYBE he'll crawl back into Andie's arms and we can all live happily ever after.

In response to Andie and Jack being twins and how Jack is older but might be a junior still…: He took the PSAT's with the rest of the group (remember). If you were a senior, you would probably be taking the SAT's your senior year because you would have had enough practice taking the PSAT's your sophomore and Junior years. Plus he could have gotten held down because of his personal and private life problems that have gone on the last year and the school felt it was better to just keep him as a junior another year and help his grades for him to attend a good college.

Apparently there was a replica of Dawson’s necklace on the official website for the show. https://www.ebay.com/itm/401080883735?hash=item5d62489a17:g:tygAAOSwSwBgKEs-

Rodney E reviews the episode and: may I be the first to say, Welcome back, Bodie! first of all, how does everyone feel about the new opening credits? Seems like they put in classic scenes from the past to remind us how absorbing this show can be the meat and bones of the show: who does Joey end up with? granted, the Dawson-Joey interaction has been dull for all this season and most of last - but I still feel those two are The Couple, tempting as a Pacey-Joey

get-together may seem. the writers have been making it seem lately that Pacey knows Joey's thoughts and dreams (i.e. the B&B to fulfill Joey's mother's wishes) but c'mon, truth is Dawson is The Man in this department. Pacey watching-her-sleep in that final scene was pretty thought provoking, I admit. if it was Dawson in that chair, most of us would've been like "yeah right, so why don't you get with her already!" also notice those sarcastic remarks Pacey made about "Potter not shutting up" while he's looking after her for Dawson, could he be hiding true feelings for her behind feigned disgust? remember all the putdowns of Andie he made last season - and see how they ended up? oh well, at least this one wringed out some emotions from almost everyone involved. I sure didn't miss Nikki, Eve, and AJ the college guy. to Katie Holmes, keep working on your acting. people have made remarks about her ability, and I've given her the  benefit of the doubt in my mind, but when she told the story about Joey's mom and the morning bacon I didn't get any sense of emotion from her. she was reciting lines without any purpose

behind it - maybe it's her voice? either she's screaming mad or wistful for her dead mother, the mood swings make her look schizo. I miss the level-headed Joey of season one. oh well, she's still hot ;-)

Coy A Hile responds: yeah, that was a beautiful scene! i, for one, though, would not have wanted to see Pacey "get with her already" the fact that he was watching her sleep

is what made that beautiful. it's one of the most serene, beautiful scenes that can take place in a relationship. him doing anything else would have ruined the mood of the scene!

Ryan3178 is happy to see Bodie: I was completely shocked to see him again. And that kid's hair, get him a hair cut please. Still I hope he sticks around for a while, time that Joey didn't have some much to worry about.

Dorian gives us the skinny on Bodie: same guy. I actually worked at the same theatre as Obi did for quite some time. Last time I saw him (early May of last year) he said he wasn't on the best of

terms with the brass at DC and wasn't expecting to come back, so when I saw his name on the opening credits I was incredibly excited for him. He did a guest spot as the major villain on the second episode of Angel this year, so perhaps he's become one of the many actors (Parker Abrams and Kendra, both from Buffy) who are going to be passed around the WB. Following the Jason Behr Path, next stop: Roswell.

There was apparently an extra scene released on the official website this week, detailing Jen’s past, or at least one part of it. From one user: I clicked on 56k real video and got it to work. The quicktime version was taking too long on my machine.

Jennifer Hutto wants to know, loudly: DO YOU THINK THEY WILL END UP TOGETHER? DOES SHE REALLY HAVE FEELINGS FOR HIM BUT IS SCARED THAT HE WILL NOT LIKE HER AFTER HE KNOWS THE SECRETS TO HER PAST?

Tank_Commander responds: Well, even though I missed the last episode due to VCR failure, I would have to say that the obvious answer is "yes". They'll get together most definitely, I think that Henry is so "head over heels" for Jen and he seems like a "real" nice guy, so it probably won't matter too much to him what type of secrets she may have in her past. I think that Henry

might be that "real" stability Jen has so richly deserved in her life, what with all the jerks she has been around in the past. The writers will most likely drag out the period of time for them to get together, just utilizing the "Jen's past" issue they gave us in the extra scene on www.dawsonscreek.com . But with the history of the show and the inherent themes from the past, I think the more valid questions on this subject would be: How long will it last? What "dark" secret(s) does he have in his past, if any? and What will the source of the tension in the relationship that will bring it either to an end or close to an end? Now, those questions are a bit harder to answer but will be more interesting to watch unfold.

Genevieve (Ashley) answers: I never thought about it until now but I think they would be a good

couple. But I think Jen isn't ready for a guy younger than her since most of the guys she has dated have been her age or older and she sees Henry as a young boy not a "guy" but i think next season might have him "grow up" a little and since he was hurt by her she might have to

persue him a little But they would compliment each other I think. And I think Jen needs something if not Henry a new character that is her age or a year or so older that is stable but not a goody goody like Dawson. they were NOT a good couple. when he found out she had had

sex before he freaked and called her a few nasty things. She needs someone sensible that wont' get her into trouble but that will be fun enough that she doesn't get bored or can't be herself! But right nwo Henry wouldn't work becuase he is still a boy and Jen as strong as she

is needs someone she can lean on.

Ryan says: More likely Henery might do something stupid to impress her more. That could

have serious consaquences.

Matt B doesn’t get what Henry sees: what does Henry see in her? She's so negative about

everything. He'll be like, "Jen, I love you." "That's nice Henry, but odds are, we're going to break up in 4.5 months," -that just sounds like something she would say, lol

Maureen thinks: I don't think that Jen told Henry in order to inform him of her past....I

think that she was trying to scare him away, that's why she asked Dawson what he thought when she told him.
