Our Favourite Trivia:

Match of the Week:

Roddy Piper vs The Tonga Kid

The film came about during The Rock n Wrestling Connection (references in a Rolling Stone cover in the film). Captain Lou became friends with Cyndi Lauper, appearing in her “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” music video. Vince McMahon subsequently booked Lauper and Lou on shows together in what ended up being a catalyst for pushing wrestling into the mainstream.

Dirk Benedict didn’t really know about the predetermined nature of wrestling until he started shooting this film.

Many of the wrestlers featured had notable careers. Rowdy Roddy Piper was known for his work in WWF, now WWE and WCW. He also famously starred in They Live and Hell Comes to Frogtown. Although he plays a good guy here, Piper was famous for his heel work throughout his career.

Sam Fatu wrestled as the Tongan Kid, and along with Afa and Sika Anoa’i, are members of the legendary Anoa’i family whose family members include Peter Maivia, The Rock, Roman Reigns, Rikishi, The Usos, Jacob Fatu, Umaga, and Yokozuna.

Captain Lou Albano was a legendary former wrestler turned wrestling manager known for having facial piercings with rubber bands attached. He would later go on to voice Mario in The Super Mario Brothers cartoons.

The film skipped a theatrical run due to behind the scenes drama. Both Dirk Benedict and Hal Needham clashed with the film's writer/producers over creative decisions to the point where Benedict got into a fight with one of the writers. The subsequent lawsuits caused the film to be delayed and it ended up missing out on a summer release window. After bouncing through release windows the film ended up releasing direct to video.
