RW379 - Dawson's Creek S01E04-05 - Discovery Hurricane

In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek rewatch, Cory and Tom unburden and unleash as they discuss season 1 episodes 4 & 5, "Discovery" and "Hurricane."

Discovery:

Episode Title: Discovery

Written by: John Harmon Feldman

Directed by: Steve Miner

Original airdate: February 10, 1998

After discovering that he accidentally taped Ms Jacobs in the ruins indulging in sexual relations with someone they couldn’t identify, Dawson and Joey let Jen and Pacey know about it, resulting in Pacey becoming very nervous. Later, after starting to search Dawson’s room, Dawson gives him the tape and Pacey confesses that it was him on the tape.

As Dawson and Jen walk home together, they share a kiss goodbye, resulting in Grams readying a lecture for her but Jen cuts her off and explains that Dawson isn’t what she thinks and that it really was just a kiss. A second conversation results in Jen trying to explain that Dawson and Joey really are just friends despite Grams’s theories.

With Dawson’s parents’ anniversary coming up, he and Joey go shopping for a gift and run into his mother shopping with her co anchor. Gail explains it away while Joey shoots daggers at her.

Pacey ends up hanging out with Tamara at a restaurant but after she is quick to pull away from holding his hand in public, Pacey begins to feel hurt, especially when he later sees her and Mr Gold openly flirting, which leads him to act immaturely and ask her point blank if she likes him or Mr Gold more. Later, as Pacey hangs out with Tamara at her house, he pushes the subject of previous sexual partners and she reveals her past to him stating that the relationship with Pacey is one of the ones that matter to her.

At his mother’s tv studio, Dawson works on some overdubs with Jen and a studio engineer, when he sees his mother kiss her co-anchor. As they walk home, he pontificates about trust in a relationship, leading Jen to tell Dawson about her own past back in New York in which she was not the virgin he thought her to be, and that that was why her parents sent her to Capeside. This all leads Dawson to seek out Joey for comfort but it turns sideways when it’s revealed she knew about the affair but could not figure out how to tell him about it, and the two separate angrily.

Although Dawson says he accepts Jen's past, his actions the next day show he is trying to distance himself from her, leading Jen to seek out advice from Joey, leaving the two to have a good chat. Joey goes to Dawson to try and make peace for both of them and Dawson admits that he and Joey’s relationship seems to be changing. Despite this, the two manage to work things out although Joey is left feeling a bit more melancholy than it seems.

Dawson's Trivia:

It’s a new Bob! And he’s played by Ric Reitz, who hasn’t had many starring roles. He has had a bunch of supporting roles in movies and TV shows, such as Superstition, Drop Dead Diva, My Parents, My Sister, and Me and Surface. He’s currently working on Nic Cage’s Willy’s Wonderland as Tex Macadoo (it’s 5 Nights at Freddy’s basically). Southern Gospel is another upcoming film of his, it’s in post production as well (it follows a rock star who wants to be a preacher).

Hurricane:

Episode Title: Hurricane

Written by: Kevin Williamson & Dana Baratta

Directed by: Lou Antonio

Original airdate: February 17, 1998

As a hurricane bears down on Capeside, the Leery family finds themselves holed up with their neighbors Jen and Grams and the Potters, while Pacey, helping his policeman brother Doug with placing warning signs up around the area, end up weathering the storm with Ms. Jacobs.

Grams ends up showing her racism by giving Bessie and Bodie the stink eye all night before the three finally get into with Bessie dropping the mic by saying it doesn’t matter what color their bay will be, only that it will be loved.

Dawson walks in on his mom as she is making yet another flirty phone call to her lover, Bob, leaving Dawson to not even care about why she is doing it, only caring that she tell her husband about it. The incident hits Dawson hard and while he retreats to his room, he ends up insulting Jen, causing her to walk out. Joey, who earlier found herself as the target of Dawson’s anger for not revealing the affair to him sooner, goes to Jen later and the two have another bonding moment about Dawson’s sudden life changing incidents as well as the size of his hands.

Meanwhile, Pacey’s brother Doug has began taking an interest in Tamara much to Pacey’s jealousy, going so far as to tell Tamara that Doug is actually gay, a remark that when found out, results in the brother going psycho on Pacey and drawing his gun on him until he retracts the remark. Later, Pacey returns to Tamara’s house and despite her stating that they need to stop their relationship, she pulls him into her house for some more tutoring.

Jen and Dawson end up talking with Jen revealing how she was sexualized too young at the age of 12 when while drunk she lost her virginity to a random guy, then started to spend a lot more time drinking, so much so that she would black out, until she was finally caught having sex in her own parents’ bed, which led to her being sent away to Capeside, where she is trying to make a fresh start. Dawson understands and apologizes for his own behavior and the two agree to start again with their new understandings of each other.

Gail, sitting alone on the front porch in tears after telling Mitch about her affair and receiving the full brunt of his anger before he drives off, sees Mitch return and sit down on the steps, asking why she did it. Her only answer is that she had everything she ever wanted and didn’t like the feeling, wanting to WANT things again. As she tries to explain further, Mitch stops her, saying he just wants to sit there for a while in silence, as Joey and Dawson up in his room reenact one of their childhood play scenes, Jaws, once again.

Classic Creek Critiques:

These are posts taken from online forums at the time of the episodes airing!

L & D Shannon: Well guys...it was superb as always. I am a little miffed at Dawson though! He has 2 wonderful femmes who care about him and he practically killed both relationships. This Pacey/Ms. Jacobs thing is WAY outta control now! As far as jen....that was the last thing I suspected. I really trusted the characters, so that got me by surprise. What is up with D and Joey? I get the feeling that Dawson is uncomfortable with her because he sees that she's growing up too. I think he likes her, but he just doesn't want to admit it because Jen is his "dream" girl.

Brandon Helwig: It appears now that perhaps Dawson shares in that "sexual tension" between him and Joey, but has always been afraid to acknowledge it. Maybe Jen is just a convenient distraction to prevent him from having "impure" thoughts

about his best friend. Maybe Dawson would rather keep Joey as a friend, instead of possibly ruining it all by taking the relationship another step.

SSJedi: I found it funny in tonight's episode, when Dawson and Pacey are in the video store discussing "the characters" in their "movie-like lives"... of course referring to themselves (i.e.Jen, the virginal girl who isn't so much a virgin; Dawson, the idealistic, naive, romantic; etc.) It reminded me SO much of the self-referential stuff that Kevin Williamson employed in "Scream". He hasn't failed at making it seem fresh and new each time he does this... good job Kevin! -Syndi

Daniel Baker

Debbie M Guenther: I just got the new TV Guide, and there was a special romance section in honor of Valentine's Day, and Pacey and Tamera were the "Most Controversial Couple".

Reid Miles: But I think he was a total iddiot, for ignoring his Girlfriend just because she is not a Virgin..

Tristesssa: I understand Dawson needing to get use to the idea.....but geeez to totally flake her off, when she was trying to be honest....I dunno, for a "15" year old girl to have a shady past then to come forth with it, shows maturity....

Kelley: This has been the best episode of Dawson so far...(what's it's episode 3 maybe 4?)....either way...it's amazing.

The dad's reaction...just plain faced...and then the lights go off. My

gosh, HE IS GONNA FLIP!!!! And shame on Dawson for being so insensitive with both Jen and Joey.

Comments about the cast being on covers of teen magazines, mostly Katie Holmes

David Fung Of all the ways to tell somebody that you'd been having an affair, the revelation by Dawson's mom was about as close to maximum pain as possible, IMHO. Really well written and acted by all the players. She really demonstrated how shallow she was - trying to explain to Dawson, saying she'd walk away to Joey, then babbling and rambling when telling her husband. "I've decided I'm sorry, so let's move on!" Arrgh. Yuck. The initial revelation was only rivaled by the "because I was bored" later on. The husband's reaction was really well played - my wife was reeling but I thought it was right on.

Clark Kent I think that what is realistic, is Dawson's life falling apart all at once. I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like when something big goes wrong, everything else seems to follow. This was even worse when I was a teenager. I also think that Dawson created many of his problems (e.g. his treatment of Joey and Jen) because of his inability to deal with the major problem of his parents. We all tend to be upset, and make matters worse.

Russell Burch

1 Whew, this really busted out tonight! I think I might actually feel sorry for Mrs. Leery. (Which kind of scares me.) When she started to cry it sent chills down my spine. When Mr. Leery just sat there and the lights went out, I thought he was going to flip. The questions that are on my mind are:

I. Will they get back together?

II. Should they get back together?

I'm pretty sure they'll end up getting back together. If they don't,

it'll be hell for Dawson. :( Should they? I want them to. This episode really showed growth for Mrs. Leery, who up to this point in the show has basically been a horny adultress.

2 Grams

Everybody celebrate! Grams got her head dislodged from her butt! :) She actually showed some personality beyond "I know what you did in New York." She talked to Dawson as a human being. I wonder how she knew that the only way to talk to him is through movies. She must be telepathic. I liked what she said about the coming baby. She seemed to care and not just judge. If this keeps up, Grams may become one of the more interesting charicters.

3 The Dawson/Jen Relationship

Wow! Personal growth. He actually realized that he was being a jerk. I never expected this. The scene where they made up was so sweet. I'm liking Jen more every episode. I still don't get why he was mad at her for lying. She barely knew him. Oh well, it over with! Yeah! The only thing I don't get is how Jen can be Miss. "Sex doesn't equal happiness" one scene, and wonder if Dawson has a pistol or a rifle in another.

Brad Posecai I think jen and joey are going to go out

RW378 - James Bond Rewatch - Casino Royale

In this episode of the James Bond 007 Rewatch, Cory and Nathan raise the stakes as they discuss "Casino Royale"

Trailer:

The Music of Casino Royale:

Lia Vollack, Sony Pictures's President of Music, called Chris Cornell inviting him to make a song for the new Bond movie, which would "reflect the dramatic new direction of James Bond", with a "strong male singer". Cornell thought it was a strange offer, considering that he is American, and imagined that he would perform a secondary song in the film instead of the main theme.

Cornell stated that the biggest two influences on "You Know My Name" were Tom Jones, who performed the theme for Thunderball, and Paul McCartney, who composed and performed the theme for Live and Let Die. "I decided that I was going to sing it like Tom Jones, in that crooning style. I wanted people to hear my voice," Cornell said. "And 'Live and Let Die' is a fantastic song. Paul McCartney wouldn't have written it if not for that movie.

The lyrics try to illustrate Bond's psyche in Casino Royale, described by Cornell as a conflicted and tough spy with more emotional depth, not the "super confident, seemingly invincible, winking kinda ladies' man superspy" of the previous incarnations. Cornell tried to focus on the existential dilemmas and possible sacrifices of secret agents.

Our Favourite Trivia:

Casino Royale had been produced as a 1954 television episode and a non-canonical 1967 satirical film. Eon Productions gained the rights to Casino Royale in 1999 after Sony Pictures Entertainment exchanged them for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's rights to Spider-Man. In March 2004, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade began writing a screenplay for Pierce Brosnan as Bond, aiming to bring back the flavour of Ian Fleming's original Bond novels.

Director Quentin Tarantino expressed interest in directing an adaptation of Casino Royale, but Eon was not interested. He claims to have worked behind the scenes with the Fleming family, and believed this was the reason why filmmakers finally went ahead with Casino Royale. Tarantino also said he would have set it in the 1960s and would have only made it with Pierce Brosnan as Bond. In February 2005, Martin Campbell was announced as the film's director.

Eon believed that it had relied too heavily on computer-generated imagery effects in the more recent films, particularly Die Another Day, and was keen to accomplish the stunts in Casino Royale "the old fashioned way". In keeping with this drive for more realism, screenwriters Purvis, Wade and Haggis wanted the script to follow as closely as possible the original 1953 novel, keeping Fleming's darker storyline and characterisation of Bond.

According to Daniel Craig, the only CGI in this movie was to erase safety wires in a lot of the stunt sequences, and to integrate the models for the sinking palazzo into the real Venetian location.

In May 2005, British actor Daniel Craig stated MGM and producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli had assured him he would get the role of Bond, and Matthew Vaughn told reporters MGM offered him the opportunity to direct the new film, but Eon Productions at that point had not approached either of them. A year beforehand, Craig rejected the idea of starring, as he felt the series had descended into formula; only when he read the script did he become interested.

Although Dame Judi Dench as M doesn't really sit with the chronology of a rebooted James Bond, director Martin Campbell was very keen to have her on board, as he really admired what she had done with the character.

Casting director Debbie McWilliams acknowledged Hollywood actresses Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron were "strongly considered" for the role of Vesper Lynd, and Belgian actress Cécile de France had also auditioned, but her English accent "wasn't up to scratch." French actress Audrey Tautou was also considered, but not chosen because of her role in The Da Vinci Code, which was released in May 2006. On 16 February 2006, French actress Eva Green was announced to play the part.

The first film in the franchise to show James Bond as a rookie in MI6. In all previous movies, he had long been a spy.

Due to the then-existing copyright issues related to the ownership of Thunderball, the organisation of which Mr White is a part is not named Spectre.

The opening parkour chase took six weeks to film.

Daniel Craig claimed to be in a state of pain for most of the shoot due to the many vigorous stunts he was required to perform.

Ian Fleming celebrated the completion of the "Casino Royale" novel's first draft by purchasing a gold-plated typewriter. Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan reportedly bought the typewriter a few years ago for $52,000.

Bond digs deeper into secret organisations in "Quantum of Solace."

RW377 - Dawson's Creek S01E02-03 - Dance Kiss

In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek rewatch, Cory and Tom do the right thing but wait for results, as they discuss season 1 episodes 2 & 3, "Dance" and "Kiss."

Dance:

Written by: Kevin Williamson

Directed by: Steve Miner

Original airdate: January 27, 1998

With Joey unwilling to kiss Pacey in Dawson’s romantic scene for his film, the young filmmaker turns to Jen to stand in for her. Later at school, Pacey confronts Ms. Jacobs into admitting they had a kiss, which she vehemently denies, regretting what happened. Dawson finally manages to convince Mr. Gold to let him into his theatre class and learns that the students in that class are his competition, planning to film football star Cliff Elliot’s sports movie idea for the film festival that Dawson has been wanting to enter himself.

Dawson seeks out kissing advice from his father, thinking that he and Jen will hang out during the dance at home watching movies. Joey overhears their conversation, but is distracted when she hears Dawson’s mother, Gail, having a phone conversation that makes it clear she is doing something behind her husband’s back, leading Joey to confront her and letting her know that she knows what’s going on.

After Dawson films the death of Joey’s character in his movie, she and Jen share a moment of bonding, with Jen vowing to do her best to be a friend to her despite Joey’s obvious uncomfortable mannerisms. Dawson continues filming as Pacey and Jen prepare for the big kiss, in which Pacey starts to really lean into Jen, kissing her like he’s training to give mouth to mouth resuscitation, much to Dawson’s chagrin. As he cancels the kiss scene, he learns that Jen actually has accepted an invite to the dance from Cliff, leaving Dawson frustrated and eventually deciding to go to the dance with Joey to make his move on Jen. Before leaving, Joey has a talk with Gail about her affair and explains how her own father’s affair affected her family.

Pacey tries to again get close to Ms Jacobs but finds himself rebuffed yet again. Dawson tries talking to Jen but his jealousy leads her to enter the girls restroom, annoyed. Despite this, Dawson tries to cut in between Cliff and Jen and the two begin to argue, leaving Jen to decide to leave both of them, storming off.

As Pacey heads home, he ends up finding Ms. Jacobs on the docks and the two have another discussion that ends with Tamara again succumbing to her base desires and kissing him.
As Joey and Dawson walk home, he finds Jen alone and talks with her, apologizing to her, with Jen admitting to him that she is in fact interested in him but in contrast to her fast life in New York, wants to take things at a slow and steady pace, as the two share a slow dance while Joey watches from afar.

Dawson's Trivia:

Cliff was played by Scott Foley. He was in Felicity for the whole run of the show in addition to a short run of appearances in True Blood, Scrubs and Grey’s Anatomy. He went on to be one of the leads in The Unit and also played Jake Ballard in seasons 2-7 of Scandal. He was Roman Bridger in Scream 3, and he also played Tom in Let’s Kill Ward’s Wife (with Scrubs’ Donald Faison and Heroes’ Greg Grunberg). Most recently he was in Whiskey Cavalier (an FBI and CIA agent have to work together to save the world).

Nicole Nieth has very few credits. Her first credit is from 1994 in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman where her character was also named Nellie. She’s also been in ER, Diagnosis Murder, Clueless (TV Series), Love Boat: The Next Wave and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. She was also “Hostess at Fancy Restaurant” in the Adam Sandler film Spanglish, and her last credit is from 2007 in the Lea Thompson lead Jane Doe: How to Fire Your Boss.

In the episode, Dawson mentions the show Beverly Hills, 90210 - Dawson's film teacher is played by Mitchell Laurance, whose twin brother Matthew had a recurring role as Mel Silver on Beverly Hills, 90210.

Nellie is in Pacey's English class, so you would assume she's also in the 10th grade. However, she is also in the film class that Dawson wants to be in, that the teacher would not let Dawson be in since he is only in 10th grade.

Kiss:

Written by: Ron Thomas

Directed by: Michael Uno

Original airdate: February 3, 1998

Dawson debates with Joey about trying to plan the perfect Hollywood style kiss with Jen and then later finds himself trying to help Cliff and the rest of the theatre class with their production of Helmets of Glory with some very good suggestions, only to be shot down by Nellie, the upperclassman producer. Mr. Gold however does give Dawson a chance to be in the class officially if he can manage to do a good job on their film shoot while taking orders from Nellie.

Elsewhere Ms. Jacobs has a conversation with Pacey about his failing grades across the whole board, and they set up a tutoring session for after school. He tries to get out of doing actual work but eventually relents and does a very good job answering questions about the novel they’re studying. He tries to put the moves on Tamara and she calls his bluff making him uncomfortable. Later, Pacey shows signs of jealousy at Tamara’s flirting with Mr. Gold and tells her that all he really wants is her.

While Joey helps out her sister by waitressing at the SS Icehouse, she becomes intrigued by a new young patron who turns out to be a one Anderson Crawford, a boarding school student who sailed into town with his parents so they could go antiquing. Joey, flirting with Anderson, introduces herself as Deborah Carson, going on to lie about her parents, home life, and schooling. Later they have a sailing date in which Joey adds to the lies to maintain the illusion and the two share a kiss before returning back home.

Meanwhile Dawson finds himself struggling to put on a happy face while tending to his job on Helmets of Glory, resulting in Nellie dressing him down in front of everyone. He manages to keep it together and continue working, and while at first is dismayed that Jen was invited by Cliff to act in the movie, is soon happy when she tells him that she is there because she knew that Dawson would be there. During one particularly difficult shot, Dawson tries to offer advice but Nellie again shoots it down before he even has a chance. However after multiple tries and fails, Cliff stops Nellie and allows Dawson to try his idea which works perfectly allowing them to finally film the scene.

As Dawson and Jen start off with some dinner at the Icehouse, Joey ends up trying to hide when Anderson shows up. Luckily Jen and Bodie cover up for her obvious lies she’s been telling Anderson despite Dawson’s cluelessness. Later Anderson says that he’s leaving soon and offers to take her to dinner in New York sometime but she declines, offering up another deception about her favorite restaurant, leaving him to give Joey his number and asking her to call him. Later that evening when talking with Bodie, she discovers that the restaurant she told Anderson about actually had been closed for some time, leaving her to throw away his number, knowing he likely knew she had been less than truthful.

Dawson and Jen head off to a wooded area that is off limits to the public but a well known meeting place for teens that want a little romantic hideaway. While working under the ruse of just shooting a scene for his movie, Dawson uses the setting to try and kiss Jen but she realizes he is still filming and is put off by it. While she explains her feelings and he apologizes, they hear sounds of another couple coming and they run and hide, fearing it may be the owner. While they try to keep quiet to avoid discovery, the big moment presents itself and the two finally share their long awaited first kiss as Dawson’s camera, left on the bench, captures the actions of the two people who came running by, Pacey and Ms. Jacobs.

Dawson's Trivia:

Anderson was played by Ian Bohen. He was in a short called Fanboy with JK Simmons and Sam Raimi also playing parts. He’s been in a good number of Teen Wolf episodes, as well as Chicago PD and Any Day Now. He’s currently in the cast of Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone, a show about ranchers in Montana protecting their land. He also played young Wyatt Earp in the Kevin Costner movie Wyatt Earp.

This was Katie Holmes first onscreen kiss and real kiss.
