The Rewatch Podcast: RW379 - Dawson's Creek S01E04-05

In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek rewatch, Cory and Tom unburden and unleash as they discuss season 1 episodes 4 & 5, "Discovery" and "Hurricane."

Discovery:

Episode Title: Discovery

After discovering that he accidentally taped Ms Jacobs in the ruins indulging in sexual relations with someone they couldn’t identify, Dawson and Joey let Jen and Pacey know about it, resulting in Pacey becoming very nervous. Later, after starting to search Dawson’s room, Dawson gives him the tape and Pacey confesses that it was him on the tape.

As Dawson and Jen walk home together, they share a kiss goodbye, resulting in Grams readying a lecture for her but Jen cuts her off and explains that Dawson isn’t what she thinks and that it really was just a kiss. A second conversation results in Jen trying to explain that Dawson and Joey really are just friends despite Grams’s theories.

With Dawson’s parents’ anniversary coming up, he and Joey go shopping for a gift and run into his mother shopping with her co anchor. Gail explains it away while Joey shoots daggers at her.

Pacey ends up hanging out with Tamara at a restaurant but after she is quick to pull away from holding his hand in public, Pacey begins to feel hurt, especially when he later sees her and Mr Gold openly flirting, which leads him to act immaturely and ask her point blank if she likes him or Mr Gold more. Later, as Pacey hangs out with Tamara at her house, he pushes the subject of previous sexual partners and she reveals her past to him stating that the relationship with Pacey is one of the ones that matter to her.

At his mother’s tv studio, Dawson works on some overdubs with Jen and a studio engineer, when he sees his mother kiss her co-anchor. As they walk home, he pontificates about trust in a relationship, leading Jen to tell Dawson about her own past back in New York in which she was not the virgin he thought her to be, and that that was why her parents sent her to Capeside. This all leads Dawson to seek out Joey for comfort but it turns sideways when it’s revealed she knew about the affair but could not figure out how to tell him about it, and the two separate angrily.

Although Dawson says he accepts Jen's past, his actions the next day show he is trying to distance himself from her, leading Jen to seek out advice from Joey, leaving the two to have a good chat. Joey goes to Dawson to try and make peace for both of them and Dawson admits that he and Joey’s relationship seems to be changing. Despite this, the two manage to work things out although Joey is left feeling a bit more melancholy than it seems.

Dawson's Trivia:

It’s a new Bob! And he’s played by Ric Reitz, who hasn’t had many starring roles. He has had a bunch of supporting roles in movies and TV shows, such as Superstition, Drop Dead Diva, My Parents, My Sister, and Me and Surface. He’s currently working on Nic Cage’s Willy’s Wonderland as Tex Macadoo (it’s 5 Nights at Freddy’s basically). Southern Gospel is another upcoming film of his, it’s in post production as well (it follows a rock star who wants to be a preacher).

Hurricane:

As a hurricane bears down on Capeside, the Leery family finds themselves holed up with their neighbors Jen and Grams and the Potters, while Pacey, helping his policeman brother Doug with placing warning signs up around the area, end up weathering the storm with Ms. Jacobs.

Grams ends up showing her racism by giving Bessie and Bodie the stink eye all night before the three finally get into with Bessie dropping the mic by saying it doesn’t matter what color their bay will be, only that it will be loved.

Dawson walks in on his mom as she is making yet another flirty phone call to her lover, Bob, leaving Dawson to not even care about why she is doing it, only caring that she tell her husband about it. The incident hits Dawson hard and while he retreats to his room, he ends up insulting Jen, causing her to walk out. Joey, who earlier found herself as the target of Dawson’s anger for not revealing the affair to him sooner, goes to Jen later and the two have another bonding moment about Dawson’s sudden life changing incidents as well as the size of his hands.

Meanwhile, Pacey’s brother Doug has began taking an interest in Tamara much to Pacey’s jealousy, going so far as to tell Tamara that Doug is actually gay, a remark that when found out, results in the brother going psycho on Pacey and drawing his gun on him until he retracts the remark. Later, Pacey returns to Tamara’s house and despite her stating that they need to stop their relationship, she pulls him into her house for some more tutoring.

Jen and Dawson end up talking with Jen revealing how she was sexualized too young at the age of 12 when while drunk she lost her virginity to a random guy, then started to spend a lot more time drinking, so much so that she would black out, until she was finally caught having sex in her own parents’ bed, which led to her being sent away to Capeside, where she is trying to make a fresh start. Dawson understands and apologizes for his own behavior and the two agree to start again with their new understandings of each other.

Gail, sitting alone on the front porch in tears after telling Mitch about her affair and receiving the full brunt of his anger before he drives off, sees Mitch return and sit down on the steps, asking why she did it. Her only answer is that she had everything she ever wanted and didn’t like the feeling, wanting to WANT things again. As she tries to explain further, Mitch stops her, saying he just wants to sit there for a while in silence, as Joey and Dawson up in his room reenact one of their childhood play scenes, Jaws, once again.

Lou Antonio is a very accomplished director and actor, having worked on series such as The Virginian, The Fugitive, The Monkees, Bonanza, Star Trek (original series), Bewitched, Hawaii Five-0, Remington Steele, The Rockford Files, Dawson’s Creek, Party of Five, The West Wing, Boston Legal and many many more! He also played Koko in the movie Cool Hand Luke starring Paul Newman.

Doug was played by Dylan Neal. Previously, he was in Cedar Cove with Andie McDowell (a judge-based drama series), he was in 8 of the 13 episodes of Wild Roses (oil firm and land gets sold to a family at odds with the previous owners), and he also played Aaron Jacobs for a few episodes of Sabrina The Teenage Witch. He was a lead in Blood Ties (a show about a vampire and PI solving mysteries), Hyperion Bay (a nerd who goes back home to find his childhood crush married the school bully) with Mark Paul Gosselear. He was one of the main ensemble cast members in Aaron Spelling’s short lived Pacific Palisades, had a good run in The Bold and the Beautiful as Dylan Shaw, and also played David Martell in Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers: To Live and Die in Starlight. For the kids, he starred as Jon Power in the Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future series (a second Captain Jonathan Power is listed. Also, Lord Dread). For the last few years he has been The Gourmet Detective, Henry, in a series of Hallmark Movies (it’s about a chef turned detective). He is currently filming Christmas She Wrote with Danica McKeller. He has also had a recurring role as Anthony Ivo in CW’s Arrow.

L & D Shannon: Well guys...it was superb as always. I am a little miffed at Dawson though! He has 2 wonderful femmes who care about him and he practically killed both relationships. This Pacey/Ms. Jacobs thing is WAY outta control now! As far as jen....that was the last thing I suspected. I really trusted the characters, so that got me by surprise. What is up with D and Joey? I get the feeling that Dawson is uncomfortable with her because he sees that she's growing up too. I think he likes her, but he just doesn't want to admit it because Jen is his "dream" girl.

Brandon Helwig: It appears now that perhaps Dawson shares in that "sexual tension" between him and Joey, but has always been afraid to acknowledge it. Maybe Jen is just a convenient distraction to prevent him from having "impure" thoughts

about his best friend. Maybe Dawson would rather keep Joey as a friend, instead of possibly ruining it all by taking the relationship another step.

SSJedi: I found it funny in tonight's episode, when Dawson and Pacey are in the video store discussing "the characters" in their "movie-like lives"... of course referring to themselves (i.e.Jen, the virginal girl who isn't so much a virgin; Dawson, the idealistic, naive, romantic; etc.) It reminded me SO much of the self-referential stuff that Kevin Williamson employed in "Scream". He hasn't failed at making it seem fresh and new each time he does this... good job Kevin! -Syndi

Reid Miles: But I think he was a total iddiot, for ignoring his Girlfriend just because she is not a Virgin..

Tristesssa: I understand Dawson needing to get use to the idea.....but geeez to totally flake her off, when she was trying to be honest....I dunno, for a "15" year old girl to have a shady past then to come forth with it, shows maturity....

Kelley: This has been the best episode of Dawson so far...(what's it's episode 3 maybe 4?)....either way...it's amazing.

The dad's reaction...just plain faced...and then the lights go off. My

gosh, HE IS GONNA FLIP!!!! And shame on Dawson for being so insensitive with both Jen and Joey.

Comments about the cast being on covers of teen magazines, mostly Katie Holmes

David Fung Of all the ways to tell somebody that you'd been having an affair, the revelation by Dawson's mom was about as close to maximum pain as possible, IMHO. Really well written and acted by all the players. She really demonstrated how shallow she was - trying to explain to Dawson, saying she'd walk away to Joey, then babbling and rambling when telling her husband. "I've decided I'm sorry, so let's move on!" Arrgh. Yuck. The initial revelation was only rivaled by the "because I was bored" later on. The husband's reaction was really well played - my wife was reeling but I thought it was right on.

Clark Kent I think that what is realistic, is Dawson's life falling apart all at once. I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like when something big goes wrong, everything else seems to follow. This was even worse when I was a teenager. I also think that Dawson created many of his problems (e.g. his treatment of Joey and Jen) because of his inability to deal with the major problem of his parents. We all tend to be upset, and make matters worse.

1 Whew, this really busted out tonight! I think I might actually feel sorry for Mrs. Leery. (Which kind of scares me.) When she started to cry it sent chills down my spine. When Mr. Leery just sat there and the lights went out, I thought he was going to flip. The questions that are on my mind are:

I. Will they get back together?

II. Should they get back together?

I'm pretty sure they'll end up getting back together. If they don't,

it'll be hell for Dawson. :( Should they? I want them to. This episode really showed growth for Mrs. Leery, who up to this point in the show has basically been a horny adultress.

2 Grams

Everybody celebrate! Grams got her head dislodged from her butt! :) She actually showed some personality beyond "I know what you did in New York." She talked to Dawson as a human being. I wonder how she knew that the only way to talk to him is through movies. She must be telepathic. I liked what she said about the coming baby. She seemed to care and not just judge. If this keeps up, Grams may become one of the more interesting charicters.

3 The Dawson/Jen Relationship

Wow! Personal growth. He actually realized that he was being a jerk. I never expected this. The scene where they made up was so sweet. I'm liking Jen more every episode. I still don't get why he was mad at her for lying. She barely knew him. Oh well, it over with! Yeah! The only thing I don't get is how Jen can be Miss. "Sex doesn't equal happiness" one scene, and wonder if Dawson has a pistol or a rifle in another.
