RW604 - Wes Anderson Rewatch - The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More

In this episode of The Wes ANDERSON Rewatch, Cory and Eoghan have discipline, trauma, the creeps and crippling fear as they discuss The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More.

Trailer:

Our Favourite Trivia:

In September 2021, Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company for $686 million. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar project was confirmed on January 7, 2022, the day after it was reported that Wes Anderson was set to write and direct the film adaptation, with Netflix distributing.

Development on the project began in January 2022, with most of the cast signed on. Principal photography took place in London that month. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar was originally reported to be a feature film until Anderson clarified in June 2023 that it would be one of a collection of short films.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2023, and received a limited theatrical release on September 20, 2023, followed by being released on Netflix on September 27, 2023. The other three Anderson shorts based on Dahl stories premiered on Netflix on succeeding days: The Swan on September 28, The Rat Catcher on September 29, and Poison on September 30. On March 15, 2024, the film was released in a full length film anthology along with the other three shorts titled The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

Poison has been adapted in English language twice before, first in Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1958), season 4 episode 1, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and again in a Dahl centric show called Tales of the Unexplained (1980), season 2 episode 5. There was also a German adaptation in the show Uit de wereld van Roald Dahl (1975), season 1 episode 2, under the title Vergif.

The Rat Catcher made us think of Ciggy Butt Brain. Check it out here-

In the dream, Abu speaks with someone who tells him to learn from his ancestries but to keep the secret. Abu awakens realizing Egypt is his destiny.

She is sent to take care of the project, knowing that the Yamagato Industries board is working to remove her from the leader position. Two executives go to Kimiko and deliver a PDA gift from a client company to her, suggesting it should go to one of them since he was the primary executive on the account. Kimiko takes a lesson from a Kensei story and reprimands them for their pettiness instead of realizing they all work together and are stronger united and takes a sword, cutting the PDA in half, much like Kensei broke a prized sword in half in the story, and asserting herself as the leader, deciding to bring Kensei to the internet so more people can learn from him.

A Lesson in Electricity

Benjamin Franklin readies his experiment to harness lighting, along with his son Will. Once the lighting hits the kite, it travels down to the key but instead of stopping there, blocked by a silk string that wouldn’t conduct the electricity to Franklin’s hand, the lightning continues to travel across the string because the string was wet. The bolt hits Franklin and knocks him out but he comes to. Will recounts the story later in a diary, but reveals he always kept secret that Franklin seemed to absorb enough electricity to kill a man, but was just fine afterwards, wondering if the world would ever be ready for that information.

She finds an old woman who has a blazing bright aura and tricks her back to her room in a senior care center. The woman talked of seeing angels all her life, and asks Linda if she was an angel. Linda lies and says she is before she grabs the woman and removes her aura, killing her. Afterwards as she walks away, she begins seeing the ghostly apparitions that the woman saw.

Donna’s Big Date Parts 1-3

Donna, a receptionist, goes on a date with a man named Blake but gets a call from a mysterious voice named EvsDropper during it that tells her he is dangerous and a killer and to grab a gun taped under the table and make an excuse about a family emergency. Back at home she uses her powers of enhanced sight to see that Blake was watching her from a half block away. She takes the gun and sung her peers, manages to shoot him directly through his night vision goggles. As Donna panics, running to her car, Elle shows up and zaps her, explaining that Donna shot her partner Thompson, and that she has a feeling Donna will fit in with them at the company just fine.

Donna awakens at the company next to a Bennet who warns her about trusting the company and how she has powers. A former trainee of Bennet’s named Felicia show up to take Donna to see Bob. He does states her powers but is disturbed when she mentions that Bennet told her that they all have powers. Bob turns and says this won’t work out now and has the Haitian wipe her memories, sending her home, and ordering them to try it again tomorrow. At home, Donna hears from the voice in the telephone again, EvsDropper, who show Sher the camera footage of what happened to her and she decides to fight back.

Donna allows herself to be recruited by the company and begins teaming with Felicia. After a shopping trip to get new clothes, Donna is pulled into Gael Cruz’s office, a man that EvsDropper wants info on, but the man tells her she is benched and off all missions. As she leaves, she decides to try and find her file to find out what made this sudden change happen and finds Thompson reading her file. She manages to grab it from him and sees a picture of a painting that Isaac a Mendez did of her, dead. Thompson says the commonly isn’t punishing her by benching her but trying to protect her.

Trust Issues

Thompson trails his own partner, noting that four human agents had been killed lately and wanting to find out who was doing it. The suspected agent is Cushing, who can secrete corrosive acids. Thompson corners Cushing standing near the dead body of another powerless human, holding him at gunpoint. Cushing uses his powers to escape but is caught by Thompson and the two fight. Gael Cruz shows up and shoots Cushing dead, with Thompson reprimanding him. Cushing emotions the name EvsDropper before dying and Thompson realizes they were set up. He then goes to find a new partner, and is assigned Donna.

Donna investigates Cushing’s death, worried that Thomson will find out she’s a double agent. Eventually with help from EvsDropper she finds the bullet that killed Cushing. She confronts Thompson and he reveals the information about the unknown person killing their agents and gets Donna back on active duty to help. She then calls EvsDropper to tell her she’s doing things her way from now on because both sides seem to be killers.

Faces Parts 1-2

Penny Logan works for the company, tracking down specials, and manages to blend in anywhere due to her training, taking down a man with the ability to emit a nerve gas when he sweats.

Unfortunately her ability to go about unnoticed works to her disadvantage when guys she is interested in don’t even notice her. One such case is Thompson who noticed Penny’s mother instead and hits on her. Penny is angry,  it wanting to work with her as a partner, but Bob insists that her mother’s ability is very useful and gives them their next target, a teleporting boy who is aware he’s being tracked due to EvsDropper’s help. Penny’s mother uses her ability to change Penny’s face into the face of his girlfriend, enabling her to get into his apartment and knock him out. Her. Other refuses to change her face back for right now and Penny ends up getting hit on by Thompson, eventually sleeping with him. (In the last panel she looks like her old face though)

As her mother’s ability wears off, Penny goes leaves before Thompson wakes up and goes to work. She talks with her mother while Thompson tries to find the girl he slept with, eventually coming up with a match that it was the teleporter’s girlfriend. He rushes off to find her but Penny has her mother redo the face change and she intercepts him. Unfortunately the real girlfriend comes home and he orders them both inside at gunpoint. Penny tries to explain about how her mother actually did this, and eventually the Haitian and her mother show up to change her back and erase the girlfriend’s memories. Thompson isn’t mad about the incident because he had a great time with her and relishes the idea of being with what is basically a different looking person every night. This causes Penny to feel that she would have rather had her memories wiped and kept the face.

Root and Branch Parts 1-3

Three different operations to capture a rogue duplicate of the leader Julien “The Root” Dumont are set to happen at the same time: Donna and Thompson in Antarctica, Bianca Karina and Devin Patterson in Australia, and Sabine Hazel in the Congo, Africa. The first two teams capture their targets, but Sabine’s gets away. Julien says it’s fine because he can sense where that third target is, something that confuses Sabine because she knows that the third duplicate is dead.

Together they drive to a forest clearing where Sabine pulls a gun on him, believing him to be a duplicate and not the original Julien. He reveals that despite the fact she has slept with many of his copies, he is the one that really loves her, but she shoots him dead. As he dies, Julien thinks back on his powers, revealing he can create copies of himself but if the original were to die, then all the copies would as well. Returning to base, she sees the clones are still alive, and then finds the original Julien, hooked up to machines to ensure he keeps living.

Sabine goes to Bennet for advice and he tells her that Dumont’s power and how they were going to use it wasn’t ever perfected, and warns her against disconnecting him, that the flood of memories could kill him. She does anyway and helps him escape as the clones start dying in their cells.  She has Julien make another duplicate to help them escape, and after a car chase, they are eventually picked up by someone she asks if they are EvsDropper and the man, who looks just like Julien, says not exactly.

Bianca and Devin move into place to capture the German but he’s not there, taken by surprise when he busts through a door and uses an ability to hold Gabriel against the wall with the metal frame of the bed. Bianca and Devin rush in but the German uses his powers to evade all the bullets being shot at him and then in turn shooting his own bullets at the ceiling, and sending them directly into Devin, killing him. Gael gives Bianca a tear gas canister which she sets off causing the German to be subdued but due to her powers, being able to assort her lungs to breathe in any situation, manages to survive.

When they come across Lewis, he has become more powerful then he was and begins attacking them with roots growing from his body. After he kills most of the men, Fallon shoots at a bunch of oil drums behind Lewis, causing an explosion that knocks Lewis out, noting that he used all his bullets except one that he was saving for Gabriel Gray.

Fallon is put in charge of hiring a new team of men for the kill squad, recruiting a deputy who asked too many questions when Skylar killed people in Midland, Joe, brother of Karen and Ted Sprague, and a man named Drake. With Lewis sedated with a mix of herbicide and ultraviolet light, they are to taken him to Guyana. With them is Paulette Hawkins, who has the ability to augment other’s abilities. The goal is to cover up a large caretaker that developed when a local manifested powers and went overboard with them. Gael calls wanting a status report and Fallon reports that the mission was a success, vegetation restored, but they unfortunately lost Paulette. She turns, confused, when Fallon puts a bullet into her, killing her, as Fallon thinks about killing all of the powered individuals that exist.

Since then he went on the run, trying to get back in touch with his girlfriend, but being unable to. After months he decided to try his family’s cabin and find his girlfriend there but after he kissed her, he realized it wasn’t her and was just a trap. Meanwhile, Daphne Millbrook has been enjoying her newfound speed and just taking whatever she wants with it, working for a Moroccan man who gets her to steal museum items which he then sells back to their countries of origin. The two agents manage to track their speedster to the Moroccan after he helps Daphne steal the Mona Lisa, thinking he is the speedster himself. The Moroccan uses his own ability to phase through hunts to get away. But the agents quickly catch him. Daphne enlists the help of a Yamgato employee who is also stealing from the company, getting him a prototype he made in exchange for information about Nakamura’s safe. He tells her it’s genetically locked and he can’t help her, sending in his goons to get her, but they’re no match for her speed. The alarm goes off and locks her inside, but she manages to escape via the roof. She gets a message in her phone that shows her the company feed with Hiro saying that his and Ando’s destiny is inside that safe. Daphne suddenly has a great inspiration and takes off running.

Hindsight

Donna has been captured and interrogated about who EvsDropper is but she has no idea of course, and Gabriel and Bianca are not believing her when she says she stopped working with EvsDropper. Gael calls out that only humans seem to be the only ones getting killed and calls the specials “freaks,” causing a division amongst their ranks, which Donna wonders if was EvsDropper’s plan all along.

Sabine is taken to EvsDropper’s forest cabin where Julien is laid in bed to rest while she discovers dozens of armed Julien clones. She decides to take Julien away but a clone says EvsDropper won’t allow that. Sabine says she wants to talk to EvsDropper as a voice calls out to her and she turns to see Connie, Penny’s mother, with a gun pointed at her. Connie says destroying the entire company is the only way to insure they don’t come after them. Connie and Sabine begin fighting until Connie reveals that Julien is actually her husband.

Connie reminisces about when Penny was born and how Julien ended up dying a few years later. She then reveals that she fell in love with Julien’s clone which made her realize that the real Julien was still alive and demanded to see him. After seeing him hooked up to the machines, still alive, she vowed revenge. RW602 - Wes Anderson Rewatch - Asteroid City

In this episode of The Wes ANDERSON Rewatch, Cory and Eoghan study the nature of a character as they discuss Asteroid City.

Trailer:

Our Favourite Trivia:

On a budget of only $25 million, Asteroid City grossed $28.2 million in the United States and Canada, and $25.8 million in other territories, for a worldwide gross of $54 million.

Wes Anderson talked about how the COVID-19 pandemic inspired the film and its story, saying: "I don't think there would be a quarantine in the story if we weren't experiencing it. It wasn't deliberate...Writing is the most improvisational part of the whole process. It relies on having nothing."

Principal photography took place in Spain between August and October 2021, with COVID-19 safety precautions in place. Several sets were built in Chinchón, including a vast diorama resembling a desert landscape with the eponymous town of Asteroid City, including its train station, a diner, a garage and an observatory.

This is Wes Anderson's first film to not feature Bill Murray since Bottle Rocket (1996). He was originally cast in Steve Carell's role, but contracted COVID-19 shortly before filming and had to withdraw from the production. Once he recovered, he visited the set and filmed a retro promotional trailer with director Anderson, in which he appears as a director or studio exec, along with Jason Schwartzman, who was in his character from the film.

What's Up Next?

More Wes Anderson, and this time on Netflix with the Henry Sugar short films.

Luckily, Sylar gets her to stop before Molly dies from Maya's power.

They all go to Mohinder’s lab, while he secretly activates an alarm, hoping someone at the Company will see. Sylar is suspicious when Mohinder wants to take a sample of his blood, but eventually agrees. Molly says she will find Alejandro for Maya, but they are saddened to find out that she can’t find him, due to his death. Maya confronts Sylar, livid that he killed her brother, leading Sylar to shoot her before she can unleash her power.

Micah returns home to find Nikki and he explains what happened to Monica. She explains she lost her powers because of the virus, but Micah uses his powers to locate Monica, who is tied up, the thug planning to burn down the building with her inside. As Micah and Nikki find the building, they see the thug trying to get away but Nikki pulls in front of him and then beats the thug up using her own strength. She runs inside and saves Monica, but is unable to get herself out. Micah and Monica watch as the building explodes and is engulfed in fire.

Meanwhile Claire studies her father’s records of The Company, intending to go completely public while Bob dresses down his daughter Elle, who is crushed to be benched from the assignment. She asks Bennett about her past and he tells her about how the Company kept pushing Elle to use her powers more and more, even as a young 7 year old. Bob tells Noah about Claire’s plans, and how they’re going to have to take measures to keep her quiet. Elle sneaks into her father’s office and logs into the security system to see Sylar with his captives. Seeing a chance to redeem herself, she goes after Sylar.

Back at home, West shows up to tell Claire that she shouldn’t go public because he likes his secrets and finding that he could share things with her. Claire gives West his Company file as he flies away out of her life. Suddenly, Mr. Bennett appears and reveals how he was brought back to life, much to everyone’s shock. He tells them he made a deal to keep them all safe from the Company, but that he needs to go with them now, leaving with Bob.

Back at the lab, Mohinder gives Sylar the healing blood, with Sylar telling him to use it on Maya first to see if it works. Immediately, the bullet is pushed out of Maya’s body and she begins to heal. Elle shows up and begins trying to shoot Sylar with her powers but he escapes with the remaining blood samples.

Elsewhere, Matt and Nathan learn that Angela helped Adam back in the day but she ended up changing her mind. They admonish Angela for everything that has happened and decide to try and find Peter and Adam before they release the virus. She tells them that a bullet through Adam’s head is the only to stop him, and that Peter will possibly need to be killed as well.

As Nathan and Adam walk into Primatech. Hiro shows up and freezes time. They are surprised to see each other, but Hiro rushes Peter, saying that Adam killed his father and he must pay. Hiro uses his powers to teleport around but Peter uses his own many abilities to hold him off, eventually electrocuting Hiro until he passes out. Adam is surprised to see Hiro but continues successfully to manipulate Peter into listening to him instead.

Peter and Adam infiltrate the lower levels of Primatech and find the vault protecting the virus, with Peter using his abilities to tear the safe door from its hinges. Peter gets it open, and as Adam goes in, Peter faces off Hiro, tossing him side with his telekinesis, holding up against the wall, as Matt enters and tries to get Peter to stop, but he fights back with his own mental powers, eventually pushing Matt away. Nathan shows up and his appearance stops Peter in his tracks and eventually starts to listen as Nathan reveals Adam’s manipulations and how he plans to release the virus. Hiro enters the vault and faces off against Adam who holds Hiro off with his sword, monologuing about his plan to wipe the world clean with the virus, just like God did in the Bible. Hiro grabs Adam and quickly teleports them both away, but unfortunately, the virus vial was in Adam’s hands and did not teleport away, falling to the ground, as Peter rushes in, having been convinced by Nathan to stop Adam. Using his powers he manages to stop the vial just before it hits the ground, and uses Ted’s powers to incinerate the vial completely, destroying the virus. Matt, Nathan, and Peter decide to put a stop to all the secrets and reveal everything to the public, not willing to follow in their parents’ footsteps, however someone watches them through the security cameras.

Hiro returns to Ando and reveals that he made sure that Adam would not be a threat to anyone ever again, having buried him alive in a grave.

Back in Odessa, using his powers, Matt makes sure that Nathan is set up with a press conference. However, as he begins to reveal what has been going on and his own powers, two shots ring out and Nathan falls, shot by someone in the crowd, as Peter holds his dying brother. Angela, watching on TV, tells someone on the phone that they have now opened Pandora’s Box.

Elsewhere in New York City, Sylar injects himself with the healing blood, and immediately finds that his powers have returned as he uses telekinesis to pull a can towards him.
