RW422 - Dawson's Creek S03E01 - Like a Virgin

In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek Rewatch, Cory and Tom are very tempted to discuss the season 3 premiere "Like a Virgin."

Like a Virgin:

Written by: Tammy Ader

Directed by: Greg Prange

Original airdate: September 29, 1999

Synopsis:

On his way back from a summer visit to Philadelphia, Dawson falls asleep only to wake up next to a beautiful and flirty young blonde and the two strike up a conversation.

Elsewhere, due to her new boss arriving late, Joey is rushing out from her job at  Logan’s Marina, in order to get home and be ready for school while Jack and Jen go about their early morning routine at Grams house, prompting a comment from the family matriarch about the two seeming like they’re married.

Later as Dawson recounts his trip and the meeting with the girl to Pacey, he explains she disappeared when he woke up (again?). Pacey changes subjects and the two discuss what will happen when Dawson runs into Joey, with Dawson claiming he is through with that whole thing and is not willing to forgive her, especially seeing as she made no attempts to get in touch with him over the summer. As the two head off to school, Mitch mentions he is off for a football coaching conference for the week.

At school, Abby-replacement and head cheerleader Belinda makes a cutting remark about Jen’s past promiscuity with Jen saying she will show her sympathy and won’t respond because obviously Belinda’s liposuction didn’t quite work.

In the school’s welcome assembly, they learn they have a new principal, Principal Green, who encourages the students to be young rather than trying to think like people twice their age. Pacey, trying to tell Dawson that Joey just walked in late, gets the attention of Principal Green, and after exchanging some barbs with him, earns himself a commendation for acting young as well as a Saturday detention.

Afterwards when Dawson catches a glimpse of Joey he decides he needs to get out of there so Pacey takes him out to a strip club where Dawson is reunited with the girl from the bus.

Back at school, Jen who surprisingly decided to try out for cheerleading, gets up on stage after Belinda and her cronies mercilessly cut down another hopeful, and proceeds to give a speech about how all of those trying out shouldn’t want to be like these “popular girls.”

After giving the girl at the strip club his number, Dawson and Pacey head back home only to find said girl waiting for Dawson inside. Pacey heads out while Dawson and the girl take out Mitch’s boat for a spin. The girl reveals her name, Eve, and then proceeds to try and put the moves on Dawson, kneeling down in front of him while he steers the boat, leading the sexually inexperienced Dawson to become distracted, crashing his dad’s boat into Logan’s Marina where Joey, who moments earlier found herself sexually harassed by her boss, is shocked to see the predicament her former boyfriend has gotten himself into.

Meanwhile, Jack discovers that Jen has been named head cheerleader, replacing Belinda much to the happiness of many students and school officials

Despite Joey having told Bessie earlier that she and Dawson had made up and things were all good, the truth is revealed with Bessie comforting her about the situation.

Later as Dawson laments how to solve the problem of the $3000 bill for repairs, Eve shows up with a donation she collected from her stripper friends to help him out. He doesn’t accept it, saying he can figure a way out for himself on his own, but Pacey comes up with the idea to turn Dawson’s house into a strip club to earn the repair money back. The plan goes very well with them quickly earning the money needed, but with Dawson retiring to his room to get away from the craziness of the party downstairs. He ends up finding Joey waiting for him, regretful about how their relationship has turned out. She begins to undress, hoping to be with Dawson again, but he rebukes her. The two argue about who should have done what over the summer with Dawson telling her that he can’t go through with their relationship again, fearing that if they do, it will turn out the same way and all the love he has left for her will be finally lost.

Eve, happy with how well the evening has worked out, drags Dawson to her boss’s borrowed boat while telling Pacey to go to Joey and explain that he does still love her but that it just isn’t the right time for them to be together. As Dawson and Eve stand at the boat, Mitch returns home and yells out for his son. Eve tries to convince Dawson to leave with her, but ultimately ends up taking off without the responsible young man who is ready to face his punishment.

Pacey rows up to Joey sitting on a dock and he relays Dawson’s message, offering his friendship and comfort to help her out, and gives her a hug as she cries into his shoulder.

Dawson's Trivia:

Tammy Ader, writer of this episode, got her start on Thirtysomething, and quickly followed up by writing the episode of Quantum Leap “Thou Shalt Not” (Sam leaps into a rabi and has to stop his sister-in-law from falling for a sleazy writer). She also penned scripts for The Wonder Years and Party of Five. She teamed with Whoopi Goldberg to create the series Strong Medicine for Lifetime Network, which saw her receive the Gracie Allen Award from the Foundation of American Women in Radio and Television (now known as the Alliance for Women in Media).

Belinda McGovern was played by Vanessa Dorman. Aside from one off episodes in various shows here and there, her biggest claim to fame was playing Caitlyn Richards in the soap opera Sunset Beach.

Principal Green was played by Obba Babatunde. Aside from his guest appearances in sitcoms and dramas, over the last 20 years or so he's made a career out of playing Lando Calrissian in various Star Wars video games and animated series. He's had a run of 70some episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful, playing Julius Avant. He's been in the show SWAT a couple handfuls of times, as well as the show Dear White People. He also had a bit part as Lamaar the doorman in That Thing You Do. We've seen him before in the Sliders episode “Summer of Love” as Cezanne Brown. He also played Carl in Thunder in Paradise.

Eve was played by Brittany Daniel. Most recently she’s appeared in an episode of #blackaf, and 4 episodes of Blackish, between 2016-2019. Before that she was in 85 episodes of The Game (show about the lives of girlfriends of pro football players), for seasons 1-4, and 7-9. She was a lead in Joe Dirt and Joe Dirt 2 with David Spade as well as a handful of episodes of It’s Always Sunny. Her main claim to fame was playing Jessica Wakefield (the mischievous and flirty twin) in Sweet Valley High. Before that however she was in a short lived drama with Sarah Michelle Geller called Swans Crossing about rich teens getting into hijinks (love, blackmail, intrigue and such).

Is season 3 like a cover song?

Classic Creek Critiques:

Prophet99: According to the DC website, Dawson had a summer fling with a girl named "Amber".

Rodeny E: Last year these kids got into a blues club on two separate occasions and were able to get alcohol without being carded. Now we see Pacey and Dawson get front row seats at a strip club with no problem. Capeside rules!

BuffXTreme: I'm sorry, but it was just horrible. The whole mystery girl Eve thing was really stupid, the idea of her popping up everywhere. They should have just

brought her in as the new girl at school rather then have her as a great enigma.

Also, someone else said it, but it seemed like a Saved by the Bell episode, with the boat crash and then the scamming. Yep, the music sucked.

Jen becoming head cheer, Jack becoming a football player, what's next? Oh I can't wait.....

Finally, I believe one of the producers said they were going to make the show "more down to earth." Man, is that a mistake. That was the thing that made Dawson's Creek successful! I think the unrealistic dialogue, along with the perfect small little town setting made it a great place to escape the real world for an hour a week. Making it more down to earth, adding strippers, and more beer parties, makes it just like every other Teen Drama at there, and it looks like it is a change for the worse.

S17Mil: Hey, My name is Susan.. been lurking here for a while...just wanted to give some of my opinions. HATE busgirl -- how old is she supposed to be anyway? sheesh, wasn't she on that sweet valley high show 5 years ago? Dawson seems like a jerk now.

LIKE - Jen. She's not a slut anymore. love the new 'do. like the jack friendship.

I also like that it made me cry. In the first season I knew it was a good ep if Dawson did something that made Joey heartbroken (making me cry). well i

was bawling right along with her.(never cried in the second season) Can't wait for the Pacey-Joey match up. They are meant for each other. Hope pacey beats

the living daylights out of Dawson.

MaryAnn responds: Not there not! Pacey and Andie! Not Joey. Bad match up. Very bad.

JCTWINDAD responds: Word on the set was Pacey and Joey would get together, but not for long at all.

Frank1252 responds: If they do get togetho, the writers can see how it effects the dawson / Pacey

friendship

Luv@webtv drops spoilers: Andie cheats on Pacey. Pacey feels like his world has shattered and with Joey hurting over Dawson they will be together for a little while. Dawson and Andie are both idiots. Pacey loves Andie so much and she loves him so this cheating thing makes no sense.

MaryAnn responds: I heard that it was suppose to be a short rebond type fling. Which is more than I wnat it to be but it could be worse.

Kara responds: i agree. i think they will have joey and pacey get together for a little

while to create turbulence then pacey and andie will get back together. at

least i hope...if not i might have to do something...destructive.

At one point there was paceysdesktop.com. It’s no longer up.

Robert Ramirez: I HEAR IN THE NEW SEASON THAT JACK IS GOING TO BE DATING AND WONDER IF IT IS GOING TO BE THAT FINE ASS ARIST THAT JOEY TRYED TO HIT ON AND HE WANTED JACK . I THINK HEY WOULD BE PERFECT TOGETHER HIM OR JENS EX BOY FREIND THE RELIGIOUSE FREAK WHO STILL IS A VIRGIAN. HE IS CUTE TO. ANY WAY LETS ME NOS OK

JCTWINDAD: From what I know, ther are no plans to have Jack date any time soon. I believe there were plans to have Jack date, but the writers were a little

iffy on whether or not this was a good idea. Jack will become great friends with Henry though. I think most people thought Jack and Henry would date, but Henry will have a thing for Jen.

GayPixie21 responds: That's funny my sources say that there are plans. I mean that is what this season was to bring. Jack dating. I will tell you this.. if Jack DOESN'T date this season I will stop watching. I get rather ill with characters coming out then going back into the closet or becoming so background that the trees stand out more.

Rachel: There is a distinct lack of other cultures portrayed in DC. The only person there was was Bodie who had a minor part, and didn't last long. I won't say

that DC is un-p.c. as it has introduced Jacks sexuality well, where many programmes would not have. However, every character on DC is white! No other races are represented.

PipSqueakJ responds: Not many blacks in RHODE ISLAND

Cmunkee responds: im not sure which is worse..

a cast of all white people, or forcing a character of each race into the cast... (i.e. power rangers... saved by the bell... im sure theres others)

gayPixzie21 responds: I don't know where you are from but.. I do know that it ISN'T uncommon for a New England town to be "whiter" then some others. That is what Capeside is. They do have people of color there, Bodie, that teacher Joey looks up too, Alexander the baby is interracial, and there is a new character named Betty who is a cheerleader who is African American. So while there is a perceived "lack" it could be very real that a small town isn't very diverse. Plus don't forget that this is based on Kevin Williamson's live and he did grow up in the South right around the time that segregation was high. Personally I would rather them have characters that fit not characters based on affirmative action.

Rachel responds: True. I'm from England, and live in an extremely multiracial area, so it's weird. I know that where DC is based, it might not be so mixed (I was really just trying to spark a topic of conversation). It's just you have programmes like Friends where there are only white actors (well, the main characters). I suppose there you have Ross and Monica who are meant to be Jewish. Now considering that is based in New York, it would be realistic to have a mix. But this isn't Friends. Honestly, it was really just a topic I thought up. DC isn't so bad as it does have other races portrayed. And it is small town America.

AceGreen responds: But consider that there aren't many shows which have much in the way of other races going on. Stargate only has 1 black guy, Ally McBeal has about two black people, I didn't see any on The Sopranos, Frasier never had any...the list goes on

L&D Shannon (Ariisa) responds: Just to add my $0.02 - There were some articles about the fact that minorities are not well represented on American TV in the Daily News only a week or two ago. It was very interesting to see. Shows like DC and Friends, as already mentioned are totally white. But shows like The Hughleys, the Parkers, Moesha, Family Matters, and Sister Sister swing the other way. The only time you will see a white person is when they are using them (roughly) as the butt of some joke. At any rate, I think the key is balance. I think having a black girl come onto DC this season would probably create much more tension than having another blonde girl. JMHO.

Marcia Boland: rom watcing the season premiere I know for definite that this year I'll have to revert back to my"90210" days ...the first episode was terrible!!! I guess they were'nt lying about that whole "ch ch

changes..." thing. It was hardly unpredictable especially that "making Dawson be Joey/Joey be Dawson" thing .....how clever!!!!! There is such

thing as making a show unpredictable without tottaly rewriting the charachters...... Kevin come home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Golgoth: Well, I think only Eve did (suck).

14u2nv responds: Yes, she did. Are you referring to her acting, or her 'on-the-boat' performance?! hehehe

Ryan Bonner: By the way the dorky cheerleader cheering to "I dont wanna wait" was great!! "I just wanted to see what lame song you'd choose to cheer to"

bahahaha

Personally, I enjoyed this episode. Laid the groundwork for the rest of the season pretty well.

I think Dawson should lose his virginity to Eve just to piss off all the sensitive women watching that want the happy ending of Dawson and Joey losing their virginity together.. lol

Lisa responds: I enjoyed the whole episode, but this was BY FAR the best part. I was hysterical.

Fred responds: And sensitive men too.

Rodney E: No wonder they named this episode after a Madonna song, cause it was trashy, trashy, trashy! This is totally becoming an Aaron Spelling-type

show like Melrose or Sunset Beach. Strippers, blowjobs, seductions, etc. What made DC different (season 1!) was how most teens could relate to the

coming of age stuff, even with all the adult vocabulary. I guess Kevin W. shot his wad of childhood memories that first season and pulled out while the going was good. I just wonder how much lower this season will sink, or if these new writers will come to their senses and start "keepin' it real".

Holmesk8ie responds: i think this is totally true to the tune of growing up. mind you they are juniors now which usually renders more mature situations. you expect them to be in tenth grade forever? the major part of dawson's character is to grow up and experience life and i think they're staying true to that. and of course the season premier is going to have a little more bite. gotta set up a new exciting season.

Ryan Bonner: Anyone that gets offered sex by two extremely attractive ladies in the same night, and doesn't at least fool around with one of them a little bit loses their membership. Of course, that IS a decision that 99% of us will never even have a reason

to consider (guys getting offered sex by two hot females in one night? Yeah right!), so I doubt we'll lose many members.

Sunshine: Here are some thoughts I had while watching the season premiere (and I'm sure

one of the zillions of messages that will be posted tonight will have Busgirl's real name, so don't respond if that's all you have to say):

-Busgirl seems like a total Jen rip-off.

-Speaking of Jen, I love her hair this year.

-And her speech at the auditions was SO much better than that "Don't judge a book by its cover" speech that Joey gave that everybody thought was so great.

-Okay, I take it back. Busgirl isn't a Jen rip-off. Jen was never nearly this irritating.

-DID SHE JUST GIVE DAWSON A BLOW JOB? She did not just give Dawson a blow job. Did she?

-"Never underestimate the kindness of strippers." LOL.

-Why does Busgirl like Dawson so much? I mean, she's an attractive stripper, why is she hanging around with somebody so boring?

-I miss Andie. I want her to come in and do some cute things with Pacey. NOW.

-I hope Busgirl's character gets developed, 'cause lordy, she's just ridiculous right now.

Rodney E: After seeing the season premiere it was bugging me that I've seen before the actor who plays the new principal. Well, it's early Sunday morning and

I suddenly awoke with the realization that this guy was in Tom Hank's "That Thing You Do" as the doorman who told the drummer to go after Liv Tyler! He was also on a "Friends" episode as the director of a musical Joey auditioned for and was supposed to demonstrate some dance moves. Just thought I'd post it before I wake up again later and forget (I've got DC on my mind too much).

Bizzy invents Facebook groups (started in 2004): Remember a while ago someone was talking about putting everyone's pictures and details onto a website so we can see what everyone is like? Well........I have a Dawsons Creek Community where you can post pictures,

messages, do a member profile and there is also a chat room. It is quite new so I don't have many members yet but it could be a good idea for everyone in this newsgroup to join and then get to know each other better. To become a member you have to have a Hotmail e-mail account, but if you don't you can get one easily for free. If you want to become a member then the address is: http://beta.communities.msn.co.uk/BizzysDawsonsCreekCommunity/homepage

You can always go and visit it first before you decide to become a member, it is entirely up to you. Well let me know what you think of my idea......
