RW463 - Dawson's Creek S04E23 - Coda

In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek Rewatch, Cory and Tom bid a heartfelt goodbye to season 4 and discuss episode 23, "Coda."

Coda:

Written by: Gina Fattore & Tom Kapinos

Directed by: Greg Prange

Original airdate: May 23, 2001

Synopsis:

Dawson and Joey sit in his bedroom and watch the movie Dawson filmed with her and Pacey four years prior and he laughs at how mediocre it looks but Joey reminds him that he did win a festival with this very entry. They discuss Pacey briefly but seeing as neither has heard from him the conversation ends as they return to watching the tv.

Mitch takes Dawson shopping for a computer and is insistent on a PC while Dawson would prefer a Mac. Mitch’s insistence wins out and they head home, where Dawson starts to leave to hang out with Joey, Jen, and Jack one more time since he leaves for college in the morning. Mitch is aghast that Dawson wouldn’t spend time at home with his family and the two share a tense conversation which ends with the two Leery men angry at each other and going their separate ways.

Grams mentions to Jen that the movers are coming early in the morning, hinting that Jen still has to pack. Jen figures it’s Grams’ way of trying to get her to stay home for the night, but Grams insists she go out with her friends. Jen acquiesces but says she will be home early enough for them to have time together.

Later Jack and Dawson talk about his goodbye to Joey, pointing out that Joey is really going to miss him. Dawson tries to play it off but Jack persists, asking him if he hasn’t thought about spending the whole summer here with her. Dawson admits he has but reminds Jack that he did fall in love with someone else this year which was a big deal for him. Despite all that however he does say he can’t stop thinking about Joey.

Walking slightly ahead of Jack and Dawson, Jen asks Joey if she had considered asking Dawson to stay for the summer, considering how Dawson has always felt about Joey. Joey doesn't quite feel comfortable with the idea that she could change someone else’s life so drastically but Jen says she thinks we all have power to change each other’s lives.

After the quartet finishes the movie they went to, Dawson drops Joey back at her place and they have a short goodbye, and he proceeds to drop Jen and Jack back at Grams’ house. The two give Dawson a cell phone as a going away present and Jack leaves. Dawson mentions how he, Pacey, and Joey were always afraid of Grams when they were kids. Jen and Dawson hug and say their goodbyes.

Mitch and Gail sit on the couch looking at pictures of Lillian and talk turns to what happened with Dawson earlier. Gail points out that as much as Dawson is stressed and scared of leaving, that perhaps Mitch is scared as well of not being needed anymore as his son is leaving home for the first time.

When Dawson returns home, he sees his father has gotten him the Mac computer he had wanted and they have a discussion about do’s and don'ts of college, which ends with a typical “dad advice” statement much to Dawson’s bemusement.

Jen and Grams chat in their kitchen with Jen remembering her feelings when her mother brought her here and how they’ve changed since then. Jack shows up and shares some tea with them as they say goodbye to their old house as Grams tells stories of her and Gramps from years earlier and how they ended up here.

Pacey ends up calling Dawson, telling him he really still thinks about their friendship and how things used to be. When Pacey asks Dawson about Joey, he says she’s doing well and keeping busy but could use a call from him, to which Pacey declines saying he isn’t quite there yet. Before hanging up, Dawson tells Pacey that he is proud of him.

Joey returns to Dawson’s just as Dawson was heading out to go see her.  The two decide to watch ET in his room and then afterwards start talking about how they think things will go in the future. They begin asking each other questions about their favorite things, such as movies, songs, moments and so on. As Joey reminds Dawson to take his poster of Brooks’ film with him, she tells him she wants him to stay. She says she doesn’t want her best friend to really go away in the morning but he explains that he has to because this chapter of his life is over and for both of them to discover who they really are. As she gets ready to go they hug and she asks him what another “favorite moment of all time” was and he mentions this exact moment as they look at each other and kiss.

Dawson's Trivia:

The marquee of the Moxy movie theater shows American Graffiti (1973), which is a movie that covers the antics of a group of teens celebrating the last night before some of them are supposed to leave for college. Tying into the theme of Dawson leaving for college. The film was also referenced in season 1, in the episode “Roadtrip.”

The episode is named after an album by Led Zeppelin. The album is a collection of unused tracks from various sessions during Led Zeppelin's twelve-year career. It was released on 19 November 1982, almost two years after the group had officially disbanded following the death of drummer John Bonham. A coda is the passage that ends a musical piece following the main body.

Mary Margaret Humes’ first role was in an episode of Dukes of Hazzard, Season 2 Episode 21: Mason Dixon’s Girls.

Classic Creek Critiques:

Mal P reviews: Well, they did it. The show, after four years of angst, love, friendship... the good times and the bad, has finally managed to make me cry. And I haven't done that since I saw E.T. when I was 10 years old. This was the most heartbreakingly brilliant episode since "The Longest Day" and I wish, I *wish* I had the frame of mind to even begin to comprehend what had just happened, but I am far too exhilirated. And I hate the fact that I have three assignments and four exams pending and I'm struggling for time to write this review!

Season 1 and even some of season 2 did have a certain "magic" to it... a feeling of youth, of innocence, of uncorrupted friends struggling to grow up with each other. Over the years, some of this magic has been lost to many things, most of it due to the unfortunate reality. As you grow older, you do lose your innocence, and I think the show has captured that well - especially with the various friendships strained. But for an episode such as this, "Coda", setting the stage for departing Capeside, departing friends, departing the small world in which these characters live... a hark back to the olds days, a feeling of nostalgia, was necessary. And that task was accomplished fabulously by Tom Kapinos and Gina Fattorre, two exceptional writers on this show. Hell, the last four episodes have been hitting the mark dead on... whatever chemical-substance these fellas are on, give them more for next season!

Dawson and Joey's relationship has always been, at least for me, surreal. In real life, it's rare to find a companion, be it friend or lover, who understands you, talks to you openly and honestly and with such great sincerity. Then again, all the relationships on Dawsons Creek have been mystical, in the sense that such friends, such good people would be rare to find once you turn off your TV. Perhaps the closest thing to a real-life friendship would have to be Dawson and Pacey - but even then, they shared an intimacy that would perhaps irk many males.

When I first started watching this show (boy, does it feel like a life-time ago) I was capitvated, and indeed riveted, by the bond Dawson and Joey shared. In season 1, it was almost impossible not to root for the two of them to unite romantically, such was the chemistry between them. I relate and emphasize most with the character of Dawson. He represents a great deal of me personality at that age. Usually very naive, trusting and yes, even clueless :) Like him, I've had a relatively comfortable and happy upbringing, my parents not only loved me but also each other. The house was always warm, and I too had an array of "dizzying electrical equipment" at my disposal. Like him, I also believed in being able to change the world and that your best friends would stick by you, no matter what. And like him, I was sorely dissapointed.

I felt perhaps emotionally close to him because I could understand the "what-if" situations he faced. "What-if" my parents had been having an affair, what if my closed off, safe world started to crash around me... and what if my best friend had fallen in love with me. Suffice to say, I rooted for the guy to come to his senses and realise the precious gifts he had, with his life, with his friends, with his family... sometimes those things just seem to get away from you.

Joey on the other hand was the classic underdog. She's had one hell of a life, losing at such a young age not just her mother to cancer, but her father to drug-trafficking. Her world had been ripped apart, and to top it all of, she was poor and had to sturggle everyday to survive, to get out of this place. Perhaps a little stereotypical for a character like that, but Katie Holmes did bring Joey to life. She was sarcastic and with a biting sense of analysis and humour. But beyond that irrepressable "charm", the hurt, the anger, she was also extremely sweet, honest and loyal. How do you not endear to her character? We have examples everyday on this board where people fight for her to end up with their favourite guy. What I saw in this episode empitomised everything that Dawson and Joey stand for. That person who you think about, and always brings a smile to your face, no matter where you are, no matter what you're going through. From the

very opening scene as they discussed Dawsons departure, you could tell they were going to have great difficulty saying goodbye. I suppose in the past, despite everything that has happened, you never saw them part with a finality, and that seemed to be near with this episode.

I loved how the entire gang were hanging out in this episode. Why couldn't we have scenes like these earlier in the season? It was like the storylines were in seperate strands, Pacey and Joey, Dawson and Gretchen, Jack and Jen. Anyway, it was great to have the "bite me" from Joey back, ahh how I've longed to hear those two words again :) And Dawsons Mr. Peskin/Grams sex thing... is this Dawson? LOL! Loved him.

I completely understand why Mitch would feel tremendously insecure about Dawson leaving. After all, he is his son, and that was the moment where he goes away for the rest of his life. Sure, Dawson will be back, he'll stay in his room during the holidays, he'll visit Lilly... but the strings were being cut, Dawson was going to soar away into the clouds. I noted the resemblance between Mitch and Pacey with regards to the future... about how in denial they are right until it hits you on the head. Oh and I agree with Mitch, a PC is just so much cooler than a Mac <g>

The gang, strolling in the night, talking to each other, doing what friends do... sigh. It was beautiful. But I kinda wish that Pacey was there too, it's sad to think that a guy once so happy and jubilant around his friends could become so estranged and despondent. I truly hope that one day, after his soul-searching journey, he can join these guys, smile, and just plain have fun.

The conversation between Jack and Dawson raised some excellent points, especially with regard to Dawsons state of mind on leaving Joey. When Dawson

said that he fell in love with someone else this year, I found it quite a profound statement. Is Dawson capable of existing without Joey? For a long time, it's been Joey going off to "find herself" or whatever it is that she does, but would it be Dawson that needs to expand his horizons? It could be said that his wonderful relationship with Gretchen dissolved in some small way because of the fact that Gretchen thought he was still chasing after Joey (not that I noticed this!). Does Dawson have the strength to say goodbye to Joey?

This idea of Dawson letting go was reflected in the conversation that Joey and Jen had. Both girls agreed that Joey had the power to make Dawson stay with a single "command"... but I had a feeling that when put into practice, the results might be unexpected. Never underestimate Dawson.

Particularly bittersweet was the early night they all called. Parting their ways you might say... things will never really be the same again. The end of high school, of happy jaunts through the streets... of teasing, joking... fearful and excited about the future... ok, I need to breathe deeply before I turn into a wreck. Jack hugging Dawson was no doubt a shout-out to everyone saying that it's ok for a straight guy to hug a gay guy, no innuendo needed.

The premature goodbye scene between Dawson and Joey on the porch was glistening. With the obvious parallel between the way Spielberg has affected Dawsons life with the way Joey has, I agree with Joey that "thank you" just doesn't seem to cut it. Ok, time to breathe deeply again.

Dawsons goodbye to Jen was endearing. My goodness, things have changed since the day Jen stepped off that Taxi eh? Who would've thought that after all this time, we'd end up here, with the two close friends happy for each other has they go off live their lives. The line Dawson said about having a few minutes to have sex was absolutely hilarious and I nearly fell off my chair!

I found it very sweet that Grams would recount memories of her youth with both Jen and Jack (who really do have a bit of a co-dependancy problem!). It seemed to help both kids understand that this was just the beginning. You can live in all the places you want to, but it's the memories you should keep tucked away. I wonder how the arrangements will work next year with Jen, Jack and Grams? Will they all live in the same apartment? That'd be kinda of difficult, considering the erm, experiences one should have in college like frolicking naked through the park on a cold winters morning. Don't get me started on *that* dare. Ahem.

The scene with the phone call that Pacey made to Dawson was absolutely electrifying. I've said it all year, but Dawson and Pacey scenes, as few and far between as they are, rate perfect 10s as two characters with such great chemistry speak with all the history and angst they've shared for so long. This was no exception. Pacey's thoughts that Dawson was the only one whom he regretted not saying goodbye to were wonderful to hear, and I'm ecstatic that despite the fact his relationship with Joey had crumbled, he doesn't in any way resent Dawson for any percieved "ghost" he played in the demise. Signs that Pacey is growing up already.

When Dawson said to Pacey that he was proud of him... oh God I nearly spilled over. Let me tell you, the neighbours could hear my rapid pants for air. I think Dawson realised how difficult it had been for Pacey to let Joey go for the better, so that he could discover on his own the wonderful qualities he posseses. I think that Dawson realised that Pacey, with determination, having struggling all year managing to graduate is a great thing, and a wonderful person accomplishment. And I think Dawson took away from that a certain degree of strength and clarity... sometimes, you have to do what's best for yourself.

I chuckled when both Dawson and Joey met on the lawn, after deciding the goodbye they had before wasn't enough of a cliff-hanger deserving of such a great relationship that exists on so many levels. May I note that Joey, despite the uncertainty she has been facing all this time, seemed vulnerable, but not in a "pity me" way... a hark back to season 1 where despite all her crankiness, you could endear to her. Let's see this Joey more often next season. I also note that Katie Holmes re-injected into Joey the various quirks and mannerisms that has made her character famous, such as the vast array of facial expressions and swirling body language. Oh for that pout.

Now, onto perhaps the most crucial and fundamental scene of the entire season... perhaps even the whole series. Really, this show could have finished with the scene... it was perfect, and it was how it all

began...Dawson and Joey finishing watching E.T. in his bedroom. I believe several people have commented over the years that this was the way they'd like to have the show finish, with a screening of E.T. for the very final scene of the show (preferably involving everyone!). And I couldn't agree more.

Anyway, both Dawson and Joey realised the enormity of the huge step they were about to take in their relationship - saying goodbye. As Joey said earlier in that episode, I don't believe that either one was quite prepared to have it come so soon. The game they played between each other was incredible to witness and quite frankly, I'm delighted that this level of closeness and, well, fun, has been put back into the show. I agree completely with Joey about what her most life altering moment was, Dawson kissing her. It all changed then you see, the relationship between her and Dawson changed from one of innocent friendship and opened up this whole new world of possibility, of romance, of love. Of dreams coming true.

I agree with the notion that Joey shouldn't be too worked up over the loss of Pacey. It was after all, he who dumped her cold and left without so much as saying a goodbye. You can only regret that for so long before it gets kinda tiresome. I don't think her past relationship with Pacey had any bearing on how she and Dawson feel about each other, especially in that scene where it was about turning the page.

When Joey asked Dawson to stay, it started that all too familiar breathing technique I mastered with this episode. The emotion portrayed across both faces was sizzling... James and Katie can convey so much with just a look. Heck, so can every other actor on this show. Well, when Joey sat down with Dawson and explained to him how much he means to her, the breathing didn't work and I just lost it. Oh man. The words she said were so sincere, and she was so right... as I explained earlier, to have someone like Dawson there in her heart, to know that whatever happens in the future, he'll always somehow be with her... it's a grand feeling. Times like these I wish I had someone like that!

Dawsons explanation as to why he couldn't stay... that he needed to move on with his life was potent. It wasn't the fact that his staying behind for an extra couple of months would have much affect on his college career, but more the fact that if he wasn't able to do what's right and persue his own life - Dawson would never be able to leave. As Dawson said, this chapter is closed... but there are far more before the book is over. They have so many elements left in their relationship to explore... so many obstacles to overcome. It ain't over yet.

The kiss. Wow. All this time I had been expecting not a peck on the lips, but a sweet goodbye kiss with a smile. What I got, was so much more. It was a powerful kiss, conveying so much emotion between the two. Wanting for everything to remain the same, wanting to say goodbye. Wanting to accept that the future was bright and full of endless possibility. A kiss that signifies that their lives are indeed changed.

A 9 out of 10 for the most nostalgic and bittersweet... no, just sweet episode in years. Brilliant stuff.

marsh_all responds: Wow, you seem to take the thoughts in my head and turn them into words everytime you write your amazing reviews. You rule m8. Theres nothing more to say, you rule.

Mak says: Well you did it again, and this time YOU made me get all weepy. Stop that damn it!! I thought this show was so perfect. I cried, sobbed, and completely lost it (ok so I didn't try the breathing technique) while watching this show. I then rewinded it and watched the last scene beginning with E.T. and cried some more. I went to bed still weepy and choking back tears. The next day my mom called to ask what happened on the SF (she has become hooked as well) and I couldn't even get through the entire thing, finally I told her she could borrow my tape cause I couldn't tell her without crying.

Anyways, I agree with every part of your review (I know big surprise I always agree). I think what draws me to this show so much is the fact that I relate to the characters and it reminds me of my high school days. My "Dawson" is a"Jason", but it is all the same and oh so familiar. So watching them say goodbye ripped me apart. I think because I'm hoping that they don't make the mistakes that I did, I let him go. We are still friends and we will always have a special place reserved for each other, but it is the "what might have beens" that really get you down. Once upon a time it was wonderful, everything hinged on that kiss in a movie theatre, holding hands on a hot summer night, back when it all meant something. Graduation

day is the last time you will ever see some of those people that is when reality sets in, we all grow up and move away from each other. Cherish that time while it lasts folks, it is a life altering moment.... Let's hope next season has this same magick.

~Ang~ Goffin says: Personally I don't really think it will lead to a new found romance for Joey and Dawson. I think, like many high school seniors want, it was just a way for Joey to fool herself. I mean to fool herself in to believing(even if it wasonly for a minute)that her life was not about to dramatically change in 3 short months. I think Joey wanted to, selfishly, be reassured that if things don't work out the way she hopes then she can have someone's arms to fall in to. I do believe she loves Dawson, but I also believe she loves Pacey. As I believe every love you feel is different. Dawson makes Joey feel safe. I think she has not always felt to secure in life, and so she loves Dawson for the security and loyality he brings. The type of love Dawson and Joey share, I believe, they grew in to. So I think that kiss was almost like a

signature, it just made sense, there was a line on the document(theri high school life)to "sign". I don't know if that made sense..hehe, but it did 2 me :) This is getting long; baically I wanted to say that I don't think that kiss meant much 2 Joey(maybe it did Dawson, not sure). It might confuse her for a few episodes next season, but I think that is about it.What do you think was meant by the kiss? and where will it lead?

Mal P says: I think the kiss was vastly different from the one it paralleled, the season 1 finale "Breaking Away". While that kiss so long ago was passionate, intense and with a scorching romance behind it, the kiss we saw in "Coda" was more tender, sweet... a manifestation of the depth of feelings between Dawson and Joey. In many ways, it was a goodbye kiss... to signal, as Dawson said, the close of a chapter. However, I think that both Dawson and Joey found something unexpected when they went in for the kiss... something they had thought was buried a long time ago. A hint of romance perhaps. We'll see what happens next season, but either way, it'll be great to see all the angst. I just hope everyone can be truly happy one day.

Jen says: Pacey and Joey have chemistry. Dawson and Joey don't anymore.

arovo says: You are wrong. There, easy! D & J'ers be joyful, I have destroyed the dissent!

Tara O says: I don't think that either couple scenario has chemistry anymore. Joey & Pacey did when they were discovering their love but all the nasty potholes in their relationship seems to have destroyed their chemistry for me. I think that Dawson is too sensitive for someone like Joey now. I don't know, he seems to have a whiney effect lately to me. The only two people on that show that seem to have chemistry lately is Jen & richboy (grr...can't remember his name...the troublemaker).

mcl says: I thought there was plenty of chemistry in that last show

nic says: I agree, joey and dawson are better, im waiting for the day they get back together!!

Joey asks if anyone was disappointed in the finale: My sister and her friends were pretty much disappointed with the season finale because "there was no 'final' to it" and I was just wondering what you guys thought?

Jasper responds: I loved it! I thought it was as final as any other season finally. Anyways they all ways throw in a cliff hanger. They want you to wonder about what exactly happened so you will watch next season. Just my opinion. anyone think they will start next season right where they left off. It would be repetitive, but they might try it anyways.

PJ Browning says about the final ending or lack thereof: there should be. if you end it with a complete sense of 'final' to it, then why continue. actually I thought that they did a pretty good job of giving that sense of "this is the end of this period of life, and a new one is beginning" while not cleaning up all the loose end

Chris Carpenter: Oh, they showed the season finale last night??? I turned it on at the end (was recording) and I thought it was the first season ending. :) Just kidding, anyway, eh, it was pretty good, but I think it kinda sucks they're putting Joey and Dawson back together...or are they? I'm still kinda wondering how they'll handle next season. Even if they make it the summer, they're all still gone from each other.

Joey answers back: As much as I liked Joey and Dawson together ::runs for cover:: I agree with the person who had posted in another msg board that "Joey is just coming full triangle" instead of "full circle" in life. And its almost like they are running out of guys for her on the show lol There was... Dawson, Jack, Dawson, tried getting back with Dawson, the college kid I suppose, Pacey and now *maybe* Dawson. I thought that when Drue (Drew, Dru) came they were going to stick her with him! lol And in the beginning of the show and sometimes still, they make Jen look like the crazy, wild girl from NYC who was moving too fast. (although she has somewhat mellowed out) PS Sorry if I missed someone or made a mistake... its early to be recalling lol

Maybe they closed the chapter in Capeside but this new beginning has started with Joey and Dawson's kiss? I didnt think that the SF was all that bad, pretty good actually. And the writers did do their job because over the next couple of months everyone will be in speculation as to what will happen next

lol =) Which by the way, that wont happen until what Sept? Oct?

Lauren says: I thought it was great. keeps us in suspense

Stephanie’s Tiger asks: is anyone as thrilled for Tobey and Jack as I am? I say it is about dang time!!

Flkofcguls answers: Wish I could be, but honestly, the relationship did not grow out of anything organic, just the the dictates of the writers. That these two characters have nothing in common except being gay should cause them to fall for each other is simply ridiculous. Yes, opposites attract, but not with Jack. His 180 turn is indicative of the kind of writing employed in the last half of the season. Very implausible character choices, plotlines up and disappearing, much strained credibility. Much as I like the actor playing Tobey, I hope he does not return next season

Lewis Nguyễn defends Toby and Jack: What they have in common: both like to help people, like kids, like to teach, are intelligent, nice and good-looking. They have more in common than Pacey and Joey. What, exactly, do they not have in common? That Tobey is too gay? Tobey is not exactly Jack from "Will & Grace."

name says: i agree i think he is just assuming their difference from the fact that they look completly different.

Flkofcguls answers angrily: Don't assume anything for me, you fucking moron. And learn how to spell and form sentences. The fact of the matter is that with every other relationship on the show, the writers gave it time to build, to let you root for (or in some cases, against) the couple, forged a bond between the two (think Pacey and Andie, Pacey and Joey, Gretchen and Dawson, Joey and Dawson, Jen and Dawson. Hell, Pacey and Jen's sex thing was better explored than Tobey and Jack.) no matter what the outcome eventually was. With Jack and his two guys, it was- slap some guy down there, don't waste too much plotline time on it, don't sweat the no chemistry or relationship building, just keep him around for that all important May sweeps kiss. So how can I be expected to care when they've given me no real reason to do so? By the way, that's rhetorical. Get mom to help you look it up if you don't understand.

Alberich posted a text tribute to Jen Lindley since Michelle Williams was leaving the show: It struck me as incredibly sad upon hearing the news that Michelle Williams (Jen Lindley) was leaving Dawson's Creek. Because only now..when it's too late can we realize how important Michelle Williams really was.

I hope she makes it big on Broadway (ironic, because that's the direction her character heads on to...New York). But the thing that finally hits me about Michelle Williams acting talents is that she reminds me of the fast talking dames of the 30s, and 40s.

Her wit, style and personality really does remind me of the great actresses from the past. And I mean this in a very good way. Michelle Williams has an intelligence that simply blinds you when she appears onscreen. She seems ready to unleash a verbal assault like no other and doens't let up. She's the modern day Anne Baxter (All About Eve), Katherine Hepburn (Philedelphia Story) who's not afraid to open her mouth and let her intelligence shine. She waxes beautifully onscreen with monologues, interacting riparte with other actors onscreen. I'm really going to miss her because of those qualities.

But most of all, I'm going to miss Michelle Williams as Jen Lindley because SHE was the REAL soul of Dawson's Creek...not that character Dawson Leery played by actor Van Der Beek. Dawson's Creek should have been called Jen's Creek. Her pearls of wisdom, sharp tongue is what interested me in Dawson's Creek.

What angers me is that the producers didn't see this in Michelle Williams...to their discredit. They seemed to have been blinded by the "charms" of Katie Holmes. I have nothing against Katie Holmes. I think she's going to do very well when Dawson's Creek finally sets sail and finishes it's production run. But she's no Michelle Williams...let's put it that way. She's beautiful, but seems to rely on that beauty to see her through tough spots during emotional scenes. Not so with Michelle Williams. Her soul shines through and she doens't rely on her beauty to see her through the tough acting scenes. (This is strictly my opinion, folks).

Again, Michelle Williams has that rare acting talent to fit right in and shows us we have to take her seriously. It amazes me whenever I've seen Michelle Williams acting...like DICK, But I'm a Cheerleader (small cameo), her acting ranges really shine. She has comic talent and dramatic talent. So I really don't understand why it was Katie Holmes who became the "sweetheart" of the Dawson's Creek show when all evidence points to Michelle Williams who should have gotten the sweetheart role. And to put it nicely, the ONLY guy on Dawson's Creek who could have matched Michelle Williams, line for line, remark after remark, quip to quip...is Joshua Jackson… the "loser" Pacey Witter. The young version of Spencer Tracy to Michelle Williams' Katherine Hepburn. If only the producers of Dawson's Creek had realized that. Therefore we never got the right couple to root for..Jen Lindley/Pacey Witter.

PJ Browning points out: and your source is??? cause I was on the WB site just this morning and Michelle is still listed

Sparky agrees: Bingo, she's really the only gal on the show who has any charm at all. Well, the Mom does ok, but Kathie plays 'cute' all the time - now it's gonna be flashin' her boobs. Jackson over Van Der Beek anyday - he's a dud, at best. :)

Alberich counters PJ: She's leaving the show.  Her character is going to New York next year. We won't be seeing her anymore. In real life..Michelle Williams IS going to New York...to be on Broadway.

KevinS says: Jen is gone. Gretchen is gone. I think Vanessa Dorman should become a regular cast member. I think she would great on the show and if she joins the Creek will be my #1 show in it's time slot as it is now but I'm sorry Joey isn't enough

PJ responds: again, quote a source please. cause I haven't seen anything that says that Michelle is gone. and the latest source that I have says that Gretchen is most likely but still not a definite.

arovo is angry: wow, seen this a hundred times from you. just because your "sources"

don't say something then it can't be true. you being a writer and someone well intwined in the industry and all, and you are always complaining that you don't have the info in question or the other people's sources are wrong. and so arrogantly condescending in your approach too! grow up please...

PJ counters: that is because there are a ton If rumors about everything and some folks don't have access to information. And if you found the information it wouldn't be so damm hard to say where (I was a  professional research librarian for several years. Quoting the source is part of our ethic.) but find Arovo, have it your way. JEN IS GONE, GRETCHEN IS GONE. PACEY AND JACK ARE GOING TO HOOK UP AND SCREW LIKE DOGS. DAWSON IS GOING TO DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH AND HIS ASHES WILL BE DUMPED IN THE CREEK.and they all simply must be true cause no one would post anything here that isn't totally reliable. and I'm out of here. And to think that I actually had some insider information that I was going to share (from my sources at the network). But not now.

Mal P wants proof: Prove it. No seriously, point me to the article, the report, the statement, whatever, that indicates Michelle Williams is leaving the show next season. Because every other indication has been the complete opposite.

Alberich defends: The last I've heard on the "grapevine" is that Michelle Williams WAS scheduled to "leave" Dawson's Creek. I may (happily) be incorrect on this score. If so, my apologies to everyone who's been under the impression that Michelle Williams is off the credits for Dawson's Creek for next season. And although I can't site an actual source nor a URL..I can say I've read NUMEROUS posts and comments about Michelle Williams surrounding her whereabouts for a season 5. Almost ALL of them mentioned that Michelle Williams was leaving the cast. So far, I haven't seen confirmation either way to verify this. However, I'm willing to admit my judgement may have been clouded by my bitter disappointment over such an event... meaning... I may have been so depressed over the "news" that Michelle Williams was leaving the cast that I didn't bother to check her official homepage. Believe me, if Michelle Williams is NOT leaving Dawson's Creek next year.. I'd be a VERY happy camper indeed. But the thing is...there's been NO WORD from the producers/writers about the fate of Michelle Williams' character Jen Lindley for next season. I sincerely hope the rumors of her departure from Dawson's Creek are completely false..but I'm only posting what I've been hearing on the boards about the future of the Jen Lindely character. Therefore my "eulogy" over Michelle Williams acting talents on Dawson's Creek still stands..regardless of her standing in the credits for next season on Dawson's Creek.

arovo replies again: for sure. there are thousands of rumors about everything. but maybe it's your research background that gives you an exaggerated perspective on

information. the fact is, information is cheap. look at the internet - it's cheap, unlimited info basically free. but the coveted kind of information we're talking about here is also cheap. it can be bought, if I want to know something I can buy it, or pay someone to find out for me. no information big or small you can't get. the difference is the surreal value you put on plot lines of commercial spew. granted, it's a kinda cool show, but whether pacey gets a job or rigs up a  megaton nuclear weapon is irrelevant - that is, any fan with a life couldn't care either way (within reason), just like there are millions of sports fans and the real sport fans are actually playing sport - not talking about it - living it. i guess it's because i come from a way of life where i don't much care, it's take it or leave it. i'm not holding out for any studio production to come out on any particular night of the week. hey, if i want a show I can make my own - or i can only say... live it. but if you want to worship the WB, go right ahead, just so I know where you're at.

good sarcasm. usenet is not the place for professionals. linux coders maybe, geophysicists maybe, sax players maybe, but every other groups is infested with wannabes and amatuers trying to piss their brand of urine into the mix. in other words the discussion is more on a level of a mcdonald's, not tiffany's. oh, and the key is, I (we/you) treat it as such. don't hold out for divine inspiration here ladies and gentlemen.

WHOAW! well, if you'd hinted I would have held out for a FIRST! anyway, stick around PJ, if the next season is anything to hang out for (as I'm sure you'll be the first to know and share with us) then this group is set to get better. can you stay? i think your contributions are just what the group needs

Mal P is diplomatic: Rightio, understood ;-) I just got worried that my Michelle wasn't coming back next year. Really, without the principal four characters that started the show, there is no Creek. If you goto the Ask Liz section at the official website, she has said all five characters will be back next year.

Alberich responds: BUT, she didn't say if all 5 characters would STAY for season 5...a big

monkey wrench. Just to prove my point on THAT score..I've heard it said that Joshua Jackson wants time off to do filming movies. If so.. then the finale fits well with him. His character gets to "move on"..but when his character is scheduled to return around late October, watch out for the Dawson/Pacey rivalry to pick up again over Joey. Joey has it too good. She gets the luxury of choosing between two of the best guys around.
