RW465 - Dawson's Creek S05E01-02 - Boston Weekend

In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek Rewatch, Cory and Tom settle in and choose to stay for a while as they discuss season 5 episodes 1 & 2, "The Bostonians" and "The Lost Weekend."

The Bostonians:

Written by: Tom Kapinos

Directed by: Greg Prange

Original airdate: October 10, 2001

Synopsis:

As Joey’s latest story is read aloud in class by her professor, Professor Wilder, it is met with reviews, both glowing and negative. Wilder returns her story with a grade of C, telling her that unfortunately she is doomed to be a writer. Joey confronts him about the grade and he tells her that the story ends right where it should be starting, to which she argues that in real life, that THAT is how it actually happened while Wilder counters that she can decide where the story goes next.

Meanwhile Jen and Jack sit outside at college and Jack ends up talking with a guy playing football nearby who invites them to a frat party later that evening.

Dawson calls Joey to let him know that he can’t come to visit because he just got a job as an intern on a movie set. While disappointed, Joey understands and Dawson heads off to the set. Once there he is first mistaken for a writer but is soon correctly introduced to the movie director Todd Carr who enlists him to read a script that was sent to him, asking him for his opinion. Dawson gives it to him honestly and Todd agrees, but admits that he will probably direct the movie anyway because Drew Barrymore is attached to it. Later Dawson is bringing coffee on set and accidentally trips, spilling them all. This sets Todd off on a rant about the incompetence that he is surrounded with on set, leading Dawson to mutter under his breath, which Todd calls him out on. Dawson first lets it go but then stands up to him, saying that Todd should be ashamed because he was given the privilege to make movies but doesn’t really take it seriously. The crew applauds for Dawson but Todd shuts them all up with a glare before firing Dawson.

Back at Joey’s dorm room, her roommate Audrey shows up and asks her to make herself scarce so she and her latest male interest can have some alone time. She decides to go see Professor Wilder about her grade but given the super long line, gives up and leaves. Outside she runs into Professor Wilder who escaped from the throngs of young female students by climbing out his window. Joey asks about her paper and he brings things around to what the kiss meant in her story: was it friendly, passionate, or goodbye.

Later Joey hangs out with Jack and Jen and after discussing where Pacey could be at this point since no one has heard from them, she is roped into going to the frat party with them later. Joey returns to her dorm room and talks with Audrey who expresses concern that Joey isn’t fully experiencing college because it seems like she’s afraid to have fun.

Elsewhere Jen heads out to a local dock with a drink which she hands off to Pacey who has a boat there and has been staying for some time now. After discussing everyone, she invites him to dinner with everyone but he declines for now, asking her to keep his secret.

Later at the frat party, Joey and Jen fend off several drunken suitors while Jack talks with the guy he met earlier about joining their frat family. Joey, after a few drinks, talks with Audrey and tells her that she was right and that Joey does feel trapped in the past in Capeside, stuck being in love with the boy who only sees her as a friend. The girls bond over their shared experiences and Joey heads off to call Dawson, leaving him a message that she needs to move on and say goodbye for real this time.

Jen attempts to chase off yet another young man who was approaching her but they begin trading barbs back and forth before he reveals himself as being not another frat guy but rather a member of the band who was playing earlier. He introduces himself as Charlie before heading off to pack up his gear, with Jen telling him her name, clearly intrigued.

Joey heads back to her dorm and finds Audrey asleep. Joey collapses in her bed but hears a knock on the door, and when she opens it, she sees Dawson has actually arrived.

Dawson's Trivia:

Since Worthington is a fictitious college (along with Boston Bay), they filmed at Duke University in North Carolina.

After digging around, I found that the studio Dawson arrives at for his internship was filmed at the Sony Studios Lot in Culver City.

Professor Wilder was played by Ken Marino, a comedian/actor who has been in many projects. One of his first roles was as Louie in MTV’s The State, a skit show which also featured future stars Michael Ian Black, Robert Ben Grant, Kerri Kennel, Tom Lennon, and Joe Lo Truglio among many others. He’s guested in several series like Rob Schneider’s Men Behaving Badly, First Years (five first-year law graduates live together in San Francisco as they try to get both their lives and careers in order), Sarah Paulson’s Leap of Faith (canceled after 3 episodes aired), Marry Me (Annie and Jake finally get engaged after six years, but her larger-than-life personality and his laid-back approach to life will severely test the theory of "opposites attract), Burning Love (a parody of reality dating shows in the vein of The Bachelor / The Bachelorette), Veronica Mars, Axe Cop (The adventures of an axe-wielding police officer dedicated to killing the various bad guys he comes across. Stars Nick Offerman as Axe and Ken as Flute Cop), The Other Two (Molly Shannon led; an aspiring actor and his sister Brooke, a former professional dancer, try to find their place in the world while wrestling with their feelings about their 13-year-old brother Chase's sudden rise to internet fame), Black Monday (a group of outsiders takes on the 1980s old-boys club of Wall Street), and Party Down with Adam Scott (a group of actors move to Los Angeles to make it big, but end up working as caterers).  He’s been on Children’s Hospital (explores the emotional struggles and sexual politics of a group of doctors charged with healthy libidos. Their dedication to their personal lives is relentless, interrupted only by the occasional need to treat sick children), was in a handful of Agent Carter episodes and Brooklyn 99, as well as Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later.

Audrey was played by Busy Philipps. She is probably best known for her debut in Freaks and Geeks, but was also in shows such as Love Inc (a successful dating consultant can't seem to find love for herself), and ER for a run of 16 episodes. She had guest appearances in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and was a lead in Cougar Town with Courtney Cox. She was a supporting cast member in Vice Principals with Danny McBride and Walter Goggins (an overprotective father is obsessed with becoming a principal and competes against the popular vice principal. However something happens that makes them work together to save the day), and most recently was in Girls5eva with Sara Bareilles (a one-hit-wonder band from the '90s gets a second shot at fame when a young rapper samples their song).

Todd was played by Hal Ozsan. Dawson’s was his first regular role in a series, but followed up with Fallen (18-year-old Aaron Corbett struggles to come to terms with his newly discovered identity - that he's half-angel), a brief stint on Kyle XY (a family takes in a formerly institutionalized teen savant who is missing standard human behaviors such as anger, joy, and love), 12 episodes of the new 90210, 6 episodes of Netflix’s Jessica Jones, and most recently did a run of episodes on NCIS: New Orleans.

Charlie was played by Chad Michael Murray, who started off with a run of episodes on Gilmore Girls before coming to Dawson’s Creek. His biggest role is as Lucas Scott on One Tree Hill. He was also the lead in Chose (a husband/father/lawyer is tasked with killing a stranger lest he and his family be killed). He was also in 14 episodes of Agent Carter and played Sam Phillips in the CMT series Sun Records. He made an eight episode guest appearance in Riverdale and most recently played Ted Bundy in a TV movie about the serial killer called Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman.

Alan Fudge played the gate guard, and he has a long list of credits dating back to the 70’s. A solid character actor, he has appeared in many series as a guest actor such as Kojak, Marcus Welby MD, Mannix, MASH, Charlie’s Angles, Wonder Woman, Man from Atlantis (16 episodes), the original Hawaii 5-0, Eischied (starring Joe Don Baker of Mitchell fame, 13 episodes), Lou Grant, Magnum PI,  Dallas, Dynasty, Highway to Heaven, The Wonder Years, Matlock, Doogie Howser MD, LA Law, Murder She Wrote, and 24 episodes of Seventh Heaven. We have seen before as the doctor in the Quantum Leap episode “Future Boy.”

In the episode Jack is seen eating Flutie Flakes, a popular cereal raising money for an Autism Foundation set up by Doug Flutie for his son.

The Lost Weekend:

Episode Title: The Lost Weekend

Written by: Gina Fattore

Directed by: David Petrarca

Original airdate: October 17, 2001

Synopsis:

On Dawson’s final day in Boston, Joey realizes that it’s her last day to drop Professor Wilder’s class, which she does enjoy but given her grade in the class is fine with giving it up. It’s then that Dawson finally gets his answering machine message from Joey and realizes that she had already basically broken up with him. As they argue about the message, Audrey shows up and volunteers to take Dawson on a campus tour while Joey goes to drop the class, both of them glad to get some space at the moment.

Elsewhere, Jack and Jen walk down the street, checking a map to figure out where they are and debating on whether Charlie will call Jen when they happen upon Charlie himself working at a radio station, right in the window and he beckons her inside. The two flirt on air as Jen mentions about not having given him her number and Charlie responding that he thought she had a boyfriend, referring to Jack, who Jen points out is gay.

Professor Wilder is stunned Joey wants to drop the class and asks her about her story, to which Joey responds that things are just really complicated right now and she has too many classes to juggle, leaving the teacher to sign the paper.

Elsewhere, Pacey flirts with his new girlfriend Melanie, niece of the Dean of Worthington, who had recently given Pacey the very boat he now lives on. As she takes off, Deputy Doug shows up and asks him what he’s going to do with his life, letting him know that he has talked to a friend of his in town who he wants Pacey to meet. Begrudgingly Pacey goes and meets Danny, the cook at a seafood restaurant. The two banter back and forth but Pacey makes it clear he’s only there to please his brother and the two part on not so gracious terms.

Audrey, giving Dawson the tour, asks if he’s truly happy in LA, given that he flew all the way to the other coast to see his friends. He counters that besides Joey, he has Jack and Jen who are all great friends from high school and does in fact miss them all. Audrey comments she’s worried about Dawson and he is glad that someone is.

Back at Charlie’s, he and Jen continue their flirting while he tries to find his CD of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You to compare it to the more recent and less superior cover by Whitney Houston, telling her that music is perfect for blowing your mind, whereas Jen counters by saying she thought that was what people were for. As they continue their flirty banter, Jen goes in for the kiss.

Audrey and Dawson meet Joey, who is stuck in line waiting to drop the class. Audrey holds her place in line while Joey and Dawson move away and argue some more, with Joey showing obvious signs of jealousy and Dawson wanting to talk about their relationship but Joey saying it’s too late to do that because he is leaving soon and that they should just go their separate ways. Audrey and Dawson leave while Joey finally gets into the office to drop the class only to find that Professor Wilder signed the name of a famous author Oscar Wilde instead of his own, preventing her from dropping the class.

Pacey and Melanie meet and have lunch, after which she pays for the meal seeing as how he doesn’t have a job and the means to do so right now. She tells him he can owe her when his ship comes in. The experience leads Pacey to return to Danny’s restaurant and asks to be hired on as a cook, given his experience the last many months in the Caribbean, and Danny does so.

Elsewhere Jen wakes up from her and Charlie’s afternoon delight and realizes she’s late to meet Jack and Grams for dinner and starts to rush off, borrowing his shoes, but he stops her and tells her he really does like her and doesn’t want to go out the next weekend and start this getting to know you process all over again with a girl that he doesn’t like half as much as he does her. With that, Jen tells him to call her.

Joey confronts Wilder and he confesses that he finds her to be a rare student that has such potential and doesn’t want to just let her leave so easily. He calls her out on being someone who only wants to do things that she does well, but she counters by going off on a rant about what had happened this weekend, leaving Wilder to tell her to write it down and try to make sense of it. After he reads her words, he compliments her on her ability to separate out what matters and what doesn’t and signs her paper for withdrawal. She mentions that she just has a lot of people she doesn’t want to disappoint in her life and he says it sounds like she has some interesting stories to tell. She leaves with the signed form but outside of his office she puts it in the trash, deciding to continue the class.

Back at the restaurant, after more banter with Danny, Pacey talks with a waitress who is outside on a smoke break and they talk about the ups and downs of the business.

Joey returns to her dorm to find Dawson gone with Audrey baiting her to get her to rush to the airport where Dawson is ready to board a plane back to LA. The two start talking about the message she left but the final boarding is starting. Joey tells Dawson that she was angry then and just wanted him there with her but can’t explain why she wanted him there. Dawson mentions that maybe this is the ending they were meant to have and that the attraction they felt was just out of a fear of moving on and growing up, but if he gets in the plane, they will never find out. With that, the two decide to stay there and talk about things as the plane shuts its doors and leaves Dawson behind in Boston.

Dawson's Trivia:

Lourdes Benedicto played Karen the waitress. She’s had a number of recurring roles such as ER, NYPD Blue, and Titans (a wealthy business family with secrets living in Hawaii). Titans also starred Casper Van Dien, John Barrowman, and Yasmine Bleeth. Most recently she was in an episode of Shameless, 911 Lonestar, and The Kominsky Method.

Ian Kahn played Danny. He was a lead in the show Bull (Stockbroker life drama), a few episodes of As The World Turns, The Unusuals (a cop drama), and a bunch of episodes of Turn: Washington’s Spies (a Long Island farmer bands together with childhood friends to form an unlikely group of spies who turn the tide in America’s fight for independence). Most recently he’s been in The Magnificent Meyersons (NY family discovers on an extraordinary day that life and family can shock you and lead you to new miraculous new places. Also stars Kate Mulgrew and Richard Kind). Funnily enough he starred in an episode of another show called Bull starring Michael Weatherly which is about the brilliant and charming Dr Bull, who combines psychology, human intuition, and high tech data to learn what makes jurors, attorneys, witnesses, and the accused tick. He was in a few movies as a supporting cast member, the only one where he was a bit higher up was Secrets In The Walls (mother and daughters move into an ancient house and all hell breaks loose).

Jennifer Morrison played Melanie, and is known from her main character roles in several episodes of This Is Us, and How I Met Your Mother. She’s also played in movies such as JJ Abrams Star Trek movies and more recently, Bombshell. Her best known roles would be as Dr Allison Cameron on House, and Emma Swan on Once Upon A Time. She was in a movie called All Creatures Here Below which also starred Karen Gillan (a young couple on the run in Kansas City).

Jen and Charlie discuss the original 1974 version of I Will Always Love You. This is actually true, and it’s amazing!

Classic Creek Critiques:

Frank1252 asks: Mal — Where are you? I hope you have the time this season (5) for you write your great after thoughts on each EP

Fletcher Bishop agrees: I agree! Please continue with posts like those you offered last season.

Mal P responds: Hi guys, I'm really sorry, but due to being unable to acquire the actual episodes in at least a reasonable timeframe, it looks like I'll have to discontinue my reviews for the time being. Sucks to be on 56k :-( Not to mention the amount of people that fill up all the servers.

Given the episode aired just a month after 9/11, there is some talk about the airport scenes.

Don Traynor says: Was Dawson on Terrorist Flight? Just a thought, Dawson chose not to get on the plane tonight, but rather to stay with Joey. The flight he was going on was from Logan Airport in Boston to Los Angeles. That's the same route two of the Sept. 11th disaster planes were hijacked from. Needless to say, this is tv fantasy land, but romantic
scenes feet from the boarding area will never be possible again due to increased security.

BRUSTROM says: It couldn't be, because the episode supposedly took place in October, although I think the airport security was a bit lax.

Terri S responds: A bit? I was at Logan Airport in Boston last week. You are lucky you are
allowed in to get your flight nevermind sit and look all mushy eyed at your teenaged love. lol

Jessica Trail asks: i really dont know why this would be a spoiler...but so people dont
complain.... why is it suposed to be october in BOSTON and they are all running around during the day, and at NIGHT at an outdoor frat party in tank tops!?

i live in maryland and its in the 20's and 30's at night here!! ive got my winter coat, gloves, and scarf out! i know they filmed in the summer in North Carolina, but still...couldnt they make it a little believable!?! okay, just my two cents...other than that i thougth the season
premiere was good, they worked the college thing pretty good

Gigi5423 responds: EXACTLY...I am from Boston and I was wearing a turtle - neck sweater AND a jacket the other day...that was a little silly

Joey-Jo-Jo says: I remember Dawson saying he was from Massachusetts (that's what he said, right?), but did he or anyone in tonight's ep ever say how far Capeside is supposed to be from Boston? Just wondering 'cause the jump back to Jen's place seemed easy to do and didn't seem to take much time. Also, where is Jen and Jack's college in comparison to Capeside? I've only been a regular of the show just since last season and I'm still trying to figure out all the specifics. Thanks.

Jessica Trail answers: I think Capeside was suposed to be like 30 mins to an hour outside of Boston. But, Jen's grandmother moved from Capeside (sold her house) and bought one in Boston right near her school. So, thats why it doesn't take very long. Jen and Jack go to school in Boston, as does Joey.

floydthebarber says: Well, today it's 73 degrees in Boston... Capeside never really seemed like it was actually on Cape Cod. I always had it pegged as Buzzard's Bay, although it could be as far north as Plymouth. That would put it 40-80 miles from Boston. Even if it were on the Cape, that would be a max of just over 100 miles.

Joey-Jo-Jo says: Ahh, I totally forgot that Jen and her Grams moved. Well, I knew they moved, but when I was watching it didn't dawn on me. Lol, at least I thought it was still the same house. Thanks for the info, you too floydthebarber.

Jessica Trail says: Yeah, and we've had a few warm days in Baltimore too....but I really
doubt I would be going to an outdoor frat party at night in just a tank top. It doesn't stay 73 at night...

Don Traynor says: Climate is ignored on Dawson's Creek as far as I can tell. I've had many
questions about Winters in Massachusetts with no snow. I also remember a few years back during Pacey's birthday party on the dock, in October I believe, they wore shorts and tanks. Hmmm.

Terri S says: DC has never followed the weather of Massachusetts. As for the weather now, yes they could be in tank tops (especially when Joey was jogging) as we haven't had many days that were too chilly and we have had many nice nights still this time of year so so far the weather is possible. What really gets me is that it never snows and they hardly wear winter jackets. They could at least mention that it may snow or have them indoors during a snow storm.

BRUSTROM has some predictions: here's what i think will happen on dc this year: (these are all contingent upon when they kill off dawson's father)

joey will end up sleeping with her professor;

dawson will find out and will end up with joey's roommate(who, btw, i like);

joey finds out and freaks at both of them

anyway, joey finds out that dawson and her roommate have done the nasty and will freak at both of them. she goes running to prof. wilder for comfort and he blows her off, realizing he's made a terrible mistake.

meanwhile, pacey dumps his rich bitch girlfriend for the waitress(lourdes benedicto) and proceeds to have a torrid, albeit short, affair with her, because, after joey is rebuffed by wilder, the only person she can go to is pacey. they reconnect briefly, then go their separate ways.

now, here's where it gets a little tricky, depending on when mr. leery dies. if he dies after all of the previous stuff takes place, then dawson will go to joey for comfort; all will be forgiven between them(at least temporarily), and they will finally end up in bed together.

if he dies earlier, then everything(except for the pacey-waitress thing) won't happen, other than dawson going to joey and them sleeping together.

jack will meet another guy and his whatever with toby will be over. jen's fling with the dj/rocker will take some kind of weird turn(as have all of her relationships) and once more she will swear off men.

there is one thing i am pretty sure about, though. mr. leery's death will bring everybody a lot closer than before and we might see a return to the kinds of friendships that were in place in season one and two.
of course, i could be wrong. this is just my opinion(and you know what they say about opinions).

Mal P is actually back anyway, and people chimed in about being happy about that but no real discussion about his review.

Hi everyone!
Guess who's back :) Yup, I'm ready to rejoin the wonderful Dawsons Creek community we have here at FanForum... I've been in hibernation over the summer, mostly due to excess amount of work. As I live in Australia, I wasn't initially going to download season 5, but instead wait for it to come on TV. The reason being that it's become more and more difficult to download the show, but thanks to a kind, kind soul (thanks Howie!) I've managed to have a stable place of sourcing the new season. Like everyone else, I was most interested to see what happened between

Dawson and Joey after their kiss last season... I hadn't been reading the summer diaries as quite frankly, they are rather uninspiring. So, I came into the first episode of season 5 with no idea as to what had been happening over the summer as well as no spoilers. The only thing I did know was that some people have been saying the show was going to be crap this year.

Well, to my absolute delight, this was not the case at all. I really enjoyed the season opener of Dawsons Creek, as it offered a fresh vibrancy to the show... a quicker pace you might say, and possibility of adventure. This last aspect is what struck me the most about this episode... they're in a new place, with brand new characters and situations they could encounter.

Never before have the writers have had such great oppourtunity to capitalize on this college theme... and I sincerely hope they do a lot better this year than they did last (mind you, the last few episodes of DC last year were really quite good! Keep the rhythm ladies and gentleman).

Anyway, the opening shot with Dawson and Joey kissing being narrated by some "story teller" was actually quite fitting... their relationship has always been like a fairy tale, the good taken with the bad, and for a second I thought we'd have a narrator this year... some mysterious third party. Alas, it turns out to be Joey's college professor. As the opening shot included just Joey, one might be tempted to think this year is going to focus a great deal on Joey. That's not neccessarily a bad thing, as long as the focus is on her experiencing new things, new loves, new aspects to the life she had been living in Capeside. Please, no more of this Dawson and Pacey nonsense... it's about time that girl was either alone for some time, or hooked up with a new guy.

One would of course predict that in making Joey's college professor somewhat of a younger man, and apparently someone to be lusted after (although I'm not quite sure why) that a possible fling between Joey and her "mentor-like" professor could be possible. Now, going back to my point about new experiences for Joey... I'm not sure this is the kind of thing she needs. I mean, the guy is married, he's her professor (hence violating some student-teacher code somewhere in that University) and the last thing she needs is *another* complex relationship to make her sob over the sink again and again. Plus Joey engaging in a relationship with a married man... doesn't lend much to the content of her character.

Anyway, that is but a possibility. The new opening credits were very well done, they seemed to spark the right amount of freshness, with a bit of the old. Not just including the credits, but the campus itself seemed very... clean. I don't know about anyone else, but the Universities I've been to haven't been that green or that perfectly kept. No hippie posters covering walls, protesting about something etc.

Audrey, her room mate on the other hand, is an absolute hoot. Whoever did the casting did a superb job with this one, I really enjoyed her character. Perhaps it's that combination of ditziness and sincerity that appeals to me... she seems like exactly the kind of girl that Joey needs, someone not afraid to grab life by the balls, if you'll excuse the term. Her promiscuous behaviour isn't an issue for me at all... I'm very well aware of the college
experience, for I am still living it ;)

Joey has a cell phone (or as we call them in Australia, Mobile phones. A more fitting term, wouldn't one think <g>). Perhaps she won't have to run after her men anymore, she can just dial them up. The phone call from Dawson was very interesting, she seemed not only genuinely dissapointed but almost like she was missing a highschool boyfriend... hmmm.

Joey was starting to grate on my nerves a little though... I mean, couldn't she at least try to have some fun in college? For the love of God, you're only 18 once... you might still be able to be tried as a minor in some states :P Her snippiness to Audrey when she questioned Joey about leaving her past behind was indicative of the fact that Audrey had struck a nerve...

Joey was feeling like she couldn't let go of the past. I think that will be a major character arc for her in the early part of season 5... her attempting to define herself, or "find herself" as is the oft quoted term. She isn't tied down to a guy anymore, and she's away from pretty much all parental supervision.

She began this little drama by deciding to attend the frat party with Jack and Jen. I found their interaction to be worthy of close friends, and I'm glad that Joey has had time to become more close to them over the summer. They appear rather close-knit, if I may add. Their interaction with Audrey was even better, she adds a dynamic to the group that has been sorely missed since Andie went away. You always, always need a chirpy character, and she doesn't seem to be confined by the rules as Andie once was.

Joey looked terribly uncomfortable at the party, even as that guy was hitting on her. She began to realise the extent of her problem as she was sitting down and talking to Audrey. Ahh finally, Joey opens up! And so does Audrey. I must say, Audrey has dealt with the heartbreak far better than Joey has, although I doubt she's the type to kick her room mate out for a little snoggin' ;)

There was a rather blatant parallel Joey's professor made between Joey's essay's open endedness and her own situation with Dawson. Her phone call to Dawson later on at the party, where she, it seems, decided to let him go and live her life was rather poignant. I don't think anyone of us wants to let go something that we cherish, especially not something that has been her stepping stone for so long.

It's easy to see that the decision she made then was the reason for her slight frown after the initial delight at seeing Dawson. After you've made such a momentous decision, to move forward etc, and then you basically have to go back on it... it feels a little odd. This is going to be a very interesting storyline, and as the professor said, was it a goodbye kiss, or
a ravaging kiss ;)

Moving onto Dawson... is it just me, or did I detect a slight moustache on him? Either way, he looks really good this year, in fact, all the characters do. His dream of becoming a film-maker is of course the reason why he's away from all his friends. His walking through the movie studio, face full of wonder was priceless... I got the same feeling when I visited Rome for the first time. Ahh to think, Julius Ceasar once commanded his great Armies from that spot... anyway. The greeting he got from the movie girl seemed to surprise him, as he wasn't expecting quite that warm a reception. I think that Dawson was fully prepared to accept that he was on the bottom rung of the ladder as far as the film heirachy goes, but wasn't prepared to be treated like nothing.

The director was actually amusing for a while. His English accent was so fake I was giggling like a schoolgirl everytime he spoke. He was of course, a prick. Brilliant and capable directors have to be, except of course as Dawson pointed out, he was neither brilliant nor capable. All the points Dawson raised were very valid, and there is something to be said about sticking up for yourself and your principles. However, in a game like Hollywood... a bit of sucking up is probably needed, and I guess one should expect to be treated like dirt until you make it to the top. Then you can change the way it works.

However, I have to admit, I loved Dawsons spark :) I've been wanting him to lay it out for quite a while now, and to have him articulate his thoughts with such innocent passion was wonderful. The fact that he decided to go to Boston was quite interesting. Is he going to stay there, or is it just a trip. I shall await the answer. Either way, it should spark some interesting moments between him and Joey, and that's always a good thing.

Jen and Jack seem to be getting slightly more airtime this time around, and for once I'm glad. I have to agree with Jack that Jen hasn't been in the game for a while. The fact that she slept with Henry was surprising... I'm not too sure I wanted to know that. The invitation to the party and the subsequent interaction between Jack and the frat "king" was... interesting. Are they going to set Jack up so quickly? Is the frat guy gay? Who knows. It'll be fun to watch though, especially with Jack's new haircut. Hey man, listened to Rick Springfield lately? <g>

I loved Charlie. He and Jen had such genuine chemistry... it was practically coming off the screen. Whoever did the casting this time around needs to stay. Compared to Henry, Charlie is Duan Juan DeMarco. I hope those two hit it off this year, and from the previews, it seems they will.

Jen's visit to Pacey was interesting. Is it just me, or has that boy lost 10 years off his age? He seems so much... fresher, and he had that genuine smile we've all missed for so long. The open waters have done him good, and his line about living life was quite true. I'm a little dissapointed that he doesn't want to be around his old friends... but I can understand why he'd want to first try perhaps a new crowd, a crowdd that doesn't know his history quite as well as the gang.

Overall, I thought this episode was a solid start to the season. However, one thing that did puzzle me was that they seemed to have forgotten something... something about a certain relationship that lasted pretty much all of season 4... Pacey and Joey's little tryst seems to have been relegated to the "did not happen" bin along with Eve and Nikki and the rest of it. Both a bad thing and a good thing. When Joey was talking to Audrey about high school boyfriends, and Joey was thinking about love etc, it seemed odd that there wasn't some reference to Pacey. I think this could be a good thing, with the new start to the show, the fresh beginning etc for everyone. However, they do seem to be delving into the Dawson and Joey angle early... perhaps it's to put that issue at rest, so that we can forget about Capeside and all that's happened there, and enjoy the life that is college. Hey, I'm all for it :)
