This Took Too Long!:

Written by: Martin Gero

Directed by: John Terlesky

Airdate: October 4, 2023

Synopsis:

Ben finds himself as a soldier named Perez on a plane in 1978 high above Russian airspace. As he waits for Addison’s arrival, he meets Curtis and Enock who are arguing about their cargo, a large heavy mysterious crate they picked up in Germany. Enock believes it to be a mysterious object given that Germans collected supernatural relics during the war, but Curtis dismisses his claims, while another soldier, Bailey, yells at them to shut up. As they start to argue about opening the crate, their commanding office, LT, tells them they won’t open it because their mission is to deliver it so that they all get what they want: a discharge from service for Bailey, Curtis and Enock can then go and do whatever they want, and Ben, or rather Perez, gets to go home. Unfortunately, their plane is suddenly targeted by a surface to air missile and they are shot down.

The plane crashes and after rescuing Enock from under one of the wheels, Ben helps LT recover the crate from the plane before it explodes. They discover the captain flying the plane died on impact and have a short funeral for him, with Bailey taking the captain's wedding ring to deliver to his wife, but then they begin arguing about what to do next, divided on leaving. LT orders them to stay because their missions was to deliver the crate and lists off the reasons they are all there: Perez for embezzling petty cash, Curtis and Encok for smuggling contraband, and Bailey for pissing off a general, and for herself, finally being put in command of a mission after years, just because she was woman and never trusted to do more.

Ben, still not having any contact from Addison, thinks back to the early days of the project and a conversation between him and Magic, where they wonder if Sam knew what would happen when he stepped into the accelerator, whether any of his team knew he wouldn’t be coming back. Magic says that it’s harder to be the ones left behind because you’re left with a great longing. Back in Russia, Ben and Bailey talk about the reason he took the ring, about how it’s important to have something physical to hold onto after you've lost someone.

Russian soldiers start approaching but the team defeats them with an ambush and begins questioning them. They give no answers but Ben is able to radio their base, speaking in Russian, and buying them some time. Ben comes up with a plan to go to the radio relay station marked on the Russian’s map and boost their signal to get rescue from a nearby aircraft carrier LT told them about.

Ben thinks back to when his friends at the project realized that he had a crush on Addison and tried to use Ziggy to predict their relationship success, only to get a 50/50 response. Ian tells him that he doesn’t need Ziggy to figure this out, and should just trust his gut with Addison. Back in Russia, Ben decides to do just that and opens the crate, revealing it was merely filled with bricks. The team realizes they were being used as decoys so that another plane could get through the Russian airspace while the enemy focused on LT and her crew instead. Ben gives an inspirational speech about getting up again and putting one foot in front of the other and LT decides the pity party is over, and they are going to the radio station to follow Ben’s idea, with everyone falling in line gladly.

As they head to the station, Ben tells LT she’s a natural leader, letting her know women will someday thank her for laying the groundwork for females in the military. She’s more put off by his words, not believing he could know what the future holds, but suddenly stops their truck short as a tripwire is in the middle of the road. They go to disarm it but Bailey ends up standing on another trip plate that will activate a different mine. Bailey tells them to leave him, telling them about how he and a man named Lieutenant Tom Miller were in love, but he lost him in battle and after his family read his diaries, their relationship was discovered and exposed. A shamed Bailey found himself not being discharged but exiled from his main duty as punishment. Ben comes up with the idea to all take turns standing on the plate to gradually shift the weight until they are low enough to use a sand bag to keep the pressure weight on. The plan works, the team celebrates, and then resumes their journey.

Upon arriving at the station, they realize it’s a missile station, not a radio one, but Ben is still able to patch in and secure their rescue from the aircraft carrier. As they go to leave, Ben reveals he heard the Russians speaking about setting new targets for their missiles, after they sent a second team to the crash site and discovered the decoy deception. Ben comes up with an idea to use the tripwire mine and the truck to take out the control panel that controls the missiles, but they start to argue about whether they should be heading to the rescue site instead.

Ben flashes back to a conversation he had with Addison before she was set to leap, in which she tells him that she joined the military to do what needs to be done for the greater good, which may include losing her life. Back in Russia, LT reminds them all that they signed up for the military to save people, and that that is what they are going to do now, with the team agreeing. They jury rig the truck to explode on impact with the co tool panel and begin driving towards it. Unfortunately, one missile begins to launch but Ben says they can still blow up the control panel and the loss of the panel will stop the missile from finding the plane. LT reminds him though that the missile will then become a heat seeking missile and return to the station and impact on the satellite dish, leaving them to jump from the truck earlier than they had planned, as the missile returns to the station destroying any hope of shooting down the other planes in the airspace above.

Ben tells LT that she has now proven that she is capable of leading missions and the team begins to walk towards their extraction site, but Ian suddenly appears to Ben. Ben asks them why they look so different and Ian tells him that Ben has been missing for three years, presumed dead, and that the Quantum Leap project was shut down completely, saying everything has changed. Ben stares in shock and horror as he leaps.

Melissa Roxburgh played LT, Ellen Grier. She is best known for playing Michaela Stone on Manifest (when a commercial airliner suddenly reappears after being missing for five years, those aboard must reintegrate into society). The show was passed on until Malaysian Flight 370 disappeared and suddenly it was more relatable. She got her start in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Roderick Rules and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days as a bit player, along with cameos in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supernatural. She was also a main cast member in Valor (a United States Army base serves as home to an elite unit of helicopter pilots trained to perform clandestine international and domestic missions). Her first bigger role was in Leprechaun: Origins as Jeni, a reboot of the Leprechaun series made to be darker and scarier.

Bailey was played by Francois Arnaud. He was a lead in Secret Intelligence (cheesy comic pane poster, no description), and a bit further down in the cast list for 22 episodes of Blindspot (Jane Doe is found in Times Square with no memory and mysterious tattoos on her body). He was a lead in Midnight, Texas (Midnight is a safe haven for those who are different, but with the presence of outsiders, the residents band together and form a strong and unlikely family), The Borgias (in the fifteenth century, Pope Alexander VI tries to control all power in Italy with the help of his several sons, through murder, intrigue, war, and marriage alliances) and Dennis Leary’s short series called The Moodys (Dan Moody returns home to spend Christmas with his dysfunctional family). Some might recognize him as Harrison from the series Surface (after suffering a traumatic head injury that leaves her with serious memory loss issues, Sophia embarks on a quest to piece her life back together. However, she realizes that the people who are helping her may not have her best interests in mind). Most recently he has been in a few episodes of Yellowjackets (a wildly talented high school girls' soccer team become the unlucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the Canadian wilderness), and a main cast member in Plan B (A controlling husband who wants a successful family goes back in time to try to change the course of events and the outcome of his failing marriage).

Enock was played by PJ Byrne. He mainly seems to be a character actor appearing in such series and films as Black Lightning, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Dynasty, Blackish, Tremors the TV Movie, Blindspot, Big Little Lies, and Cobra Kai to name a few. He did have a lead role in Vinyl (Richie Finestra, a shrewd record executive from New York, tries to promote American Century, his music label, amidst the changing music scene in the 1970s) and Josh Halloway’s short lived Intelligence series (a high-tech intelligence operative, enhanced with a super-computer microchip in his brain, aids an elite government cyber-security agency in special missions, with John Bilingsley). If you’re a fan of Avatar: The Last AirBender and its spinoff The Legend of Korra, he provides the voice of Bolin for 47 episodes and its related video games. In 2022 was a lead in Irreverent (a criminal from Chicago is forced to hide in a small Australian reef town posing as the new church Reverend).

Curtis was played by Aaron Abrams, and while he does look like he could be related to JJ, nothing could be found that linked the two together. He was also a supporting cast member in 25 episodes of Blindspot. He voiced The Tinkerer in a few episodes of Spider-Man, and was a lead in the animated series Producing Parker (follows the life of an overworked and underpaid TV producer and her crewmates who work on a daytime talk show). He was in 27 of the 39 episodes of the Hannibal TV series, and lead the series Children Ruin Everything (the half-hour comedy series follows Astrid and James as they struggle to hold onto their identities while raising their two young children in the city).

Ronny and Enock talk about Roswell being a hoax, but consider the validity of an alien event in Angel Fire, New Mexico. The area is known as a UFO hotspot to this day, with some witnesses claiming a bullet-shaped UFO was once escorted over the region. This promotional shot does also show a sign indicating that an episode will take place in New Mexico.
