After being fired in July 2018 over controversial quotes from the past, James Gunn was reinstated by Disney as director of the film in March 2019 after meeting with president Alan F. Horn on multiple occasions. Horn came to this decision based on Gunn's public apology and his handling of the situation afterwards. Gunn had never fought his firing, and stated that "my words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since... also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time." Horn first met with Gunn just a month after his firing at the behest of Gunn's agents, but only agreed as a courtesy, and maintained that he would not be re-hired. However, Horn privately notified Gunn he could come back to Marvel a day after Gunn signed on to The Suicide Squad (2021) in October 2018. Filming of Vol. 3 was put on hold until after Gunn finished The Suicide Squad.
