Psychic Friends:
Written by: Dana Baratta
Directed by: Patrick Norris
Original airdate: March 10, 1999
Synopsis:
Dawson sits on his bed while Joey finishes watching his completed film, crying with emotion, and proceeds to tell him how great it is and how Jack will become known as one for the greatest directors ever for this one. Jack then comes by and asks Joey to marry him after having received an offer to go work for Spielberg, as Dawson starts screaming and wakes, realizing it was all a dream.
At school, Dawson is in awe of their new film teacher Miss Kennedy (who is in the process of writing an actual screenplay for a real film studio), Joey and Jack build on their friendship in the cafeteria, joking around, and Andie convinces Pacey to play the part of safety mascot Captain Skippy to help inform kids about the dangers of drugs.
Later, at the annual fair, after getting psychic advice from the fair’s soothsayer to say yes to every opportunity that comes her way, Joey and Jack hang up some of her drawings for display, as a boy named Collin stops by to view her work, introducing himself and complimenting her on her talent. Joey seeks him out later, at Jack’s behest, and is amazed at his photography work as well that is on display. He asks to photograph her, commenting on her beauty and she agrees to the opportunity.
Elsewhere, Jen helps grams set up her booth, when a man approaches them, introducing himself as Whit, someone that Grams knew back in the day. He asks her to dinner to reminisce over old times but she declines. Not one to take a no, he returns with a rose and asks her again, and this time acquiesces with Jen’s gentle nudging.
Dawson, having helped Miss Kennedy with the silent film festival setup, asks her to watch his movie, to which she does, but then gives him her opinion, honest and straightforward as he asked for, and it crushes him as she says it’s uninspired, flat, with unbelievable dialogue, and full of self referential cliches, adding that Hollywood is the kind of place that eats sweet people like Dawson right up.
At the police booth, Pacey does his best to put on a puppet show as Captain Skippy, but as expected, most kids don’t appreciate it and hurl insults before he ends up taking a break. Andie rushes out of the fortune teller booth after receiving distressing information, that her past troubles are only a sign of things to come, leaving Pacey to try his best to comfort her.
Jack accompanies Joey to her photo shoot and together he and Collin manage to get Joey loosened up and enjoying herself as she gets photographed. Jack then leaves and Collin asks Joey if Jack is single. She sets up a meeting between Jack and Collin for later that evening, but Jack is shocked she would do so without asking him first, leaving her to tell Collin that Jack isn’t coming.
Grams, all gussied up thanks to Jen helping her with her hair and outfits, sits alone by the fire at the fair. Jen finds her and asks what happened and Grams explains that Whit couldn’t make it because his wife wasn’t feeling well and he had to go to take care of her. Grams is thankful for Jen’s help however, because the experience made her see that she can’t live in the past, just waiting for the end of her days, but that she still has living to do.
Dawson, after hearing a reading from the psychic about how his soulmate is all around him and can still be found, heads home and destroys part of Jack’s Capeside model in his frustration over his movie and his life and heads to bed, while Joey sees someone waiting outside her home, and as he turns, she sees it’s her formerly incarcerated father.
Dawson's Trivia:
Miss Kennedy was played by Mädchen Amick. Currently she plays Alice Cooper, Betty’s mother, in Riverdale. Previously, she was Shelly in Twin Peaks. She was also a lead in Witches of East End (a group of friends discover they are witches who are destined to fight an enemy), and made various appearances in shows such as Damages, My Own Worst Enemy, Californication, Gossip Girl, Kidnapped, Joey, and ER (all multiple episode runs). She played Ariel in half of the new Fantasy Island series episodes, as well as the lead in CPW (Central Park West), a drama about ambitious New Yorkers and their passion for money, sex and power, and a sitcom called Freddie (Prinze Jr.) about a successful chef taking in his older sister and niece, widowed sister in law, and a feisty Latina grandmother.
Colin was played by Nick Stabile. Most recently (in 2016), he appeared for a run of episodes on General Hospital, and before that, Days of Our Lives. In 2007, he was in a drama called Saints & Sinners (about corruption, greed, deception, and murder set against the backdrop of a large southern church). Before that he was in a series called Passions (wealthy family rules over a town) for a run of 14 episodes, and a few episodes of a show called Half & Half (comedy about half sisters trying to live in the same apartment building). He was a lead on the show Sunset Beach (3 years, over 700 episodes) for 156 episodes. He also played Dennis Wilson in a TV movie called The Beach Boys: An American Family.
A Perfect Wedding:
Written by: Mike White
Directed by: Greg Prange
Original airdate: April 28, 1999 (7 week break)
Synopsis:
As Dawson watches his film to his mother’s approval, the two talk about how he needs to stay after his dream despite adversity, something that he turns around and tells his mother to do when concerning Mitch. At the Potter household, Joey is trying to come to grips now that her father has returned, while Bessie lets them know that the IceHouse is officially catering her friends wedding this weekend after the scheduled caterer cancelled, news that energizes Mike, but stresses out Joey, leaving her father to try and console her, saying it’s HIS job to worry from now on.
At school, Joey confides in Jack that she is not feeling good about the whole situation concerning her father and the catering job only exacerbates the problem, but Jack lets her know he will be there to help. Jack ends up asking Pacey and Dawson to help out and they agree but the news of Mike Potter shocks Dawson. Pacey ends up roping Andie into helping as well, via a bet, despite her insistence that she hates weddings.
Elsewhere, despite her recently having grown as a character and moved past her past demons, Jen decides she is tired of being a good girl and seeks out Abby to indulge her in her evil wanton ways this weekend.
In the kitchen at the wedding site, Joey continues to be stressed out despite Dawson trying to reassure her, dismissing the comments of some women who were gossiping about her father earlier but clearly affected by it. As Dawson welcomes his mom into the wedding, they both notice that Mitch has shown up with a date, film teacher Miss Kennedy. Elsewhere, Pacey and Andie set up the wedding cake but as Andie complains, her manic gestures end up knocking the top of the cake off to the ground, leaving them to try and put it back together in the kitchen.
Dawson happens upon the bride, locked in her dressing room crying and wanting to escape out the window. Dawson tries to help but it isn’t until Jack comes to help and explain that love isn’t supposed to be perfect, that the bride manages to calm down and ready herself for the ceremony. Dawson is in awe of Jack's ability to help people and lament how Joey used to come to him to be comforted while Jack says it will happen again, and suggests he perhaps needs to push forward to get that connection back, as he feels that their two lives are inextricably intertwined.
Back at Grams’ house, Jen and Abby drink and dance wildly in her bedroom but are told to turn it down, leaving the two to decide to crash the wedding since they weren’t invited.
Joey’s stress boils over when she and Bessie argue about how things are going and she insults her father who overhears the exchange. Mike later tells Joey he didn’t think about how him coming back would affect her, saying he has failed again as a parent because Joey is the one getting stressed out protecting him from the gossiping townspeople.
As Gail and Dawson talk about Mitch and his date, Mitch and Miss Kennedy approach. After a cold reception, Gail leaves while Mitch follows Dawson to talk with him, apologizing for inadvertently putting him in the middle, and ending with Dawson telling him he shouldn’t be dating his teacher.
Jen and Abby show up at the reception and begin drinking but Andie quickly kicks them out, but not before Abby grabs a bottle of wine on their way out. As they hang out on the docks, drinking heavily, Abby slips and bangs her head before falling into the cold water with Jen jumping in after to help her. Unfortunately, her help is to no avail as Abby is later found in the water, dead, and zipped into a body bag, as the ambulance carries her away.
Dawson finds Joey who has obviously been crying and he talks with her offering comfort and hugging. Afterwards she finds her dad and explains how she felt after he was arrested and how she stood up to a bully at school, who was making fun of him, and she tells him that no matter what she is glad he is back home and the two hug. She asks him to come outside to the main hall but he says he’s not ready just yet for that.
Quite miraculously, Pacey and Andie manage to rebuild the wedding cake to great success and Dawson asks his mother to dance to which she accepts. Joey watches from afar and is shocked when her father appears through the doors in a full suit and approaches Joey to ask her for a dance. Eventually, they move towards Dawson and Gail with Mike offering Joey over to Dawson for a dance and the two embrace and talk as they dance. Joey thanks Dawson for being her friend and tells Dawson she loves him, which Dawson repeats back before they both lean in and kiss each other passionately.
Dawson's Trivia:
Pam the Bride was played by Katy Selverstone. She is probably best known for her role as Lisa, Drew’s girlfriend in the first two seasons of The Drew Carey Show. Other than that, she has a bunch of credits as featured extras or supporting cast members in shows like C-16: FBI, Grounded For Life, NYPD Blue, CSI, The L Word, and Ghost Whisperer. She was the lead in The Politics of Fur (LA producer living with a tiger and gay assistant gets enamored with a female singer), and Bam Bam and Celeste (Margaret Cho movie, girl from midwest moves to New York and discovers true beauty is from within).
One of the gossiping women was Cynthia Stegner, who was a production manager on Dawson’s for around 20 episodes. She would go on to work on many many many shows such as The Goldbergs, Better Call Saul, Timeless, Outlander, One Day At A Time, The Tick, The Blacklist, Kevin Can Wait, Preacher, FutureMan, Dr. Ken, Community, the list goes on and on. This was her only acting credit. The other gossiping woman was Karen Brigman, and she has just 8 credits, all bit roles. However, one of them was as The Nun in 1993’s Super Mario Bros. Additionally, she did stunts on Tammy, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and several episodes of Dawson’s Creek.
Essential Playlist:
Dominique Dumas asks: Am I the only one who misses the old Pacey? I mean it's great that he's no longer a "failure", but I miss his kinda wild side... The only time we really saw it this year was when he stood up to his teacher... Did you saw in the bar?! I would have think he would, maybe not get drunk(but why not?), but at least jump on the stage, have some fun, things like that...
Annapilar responds: I do, I do!!!! It's been episodes since he;s said any really witty lines. lately he's too busy giving soul-stirring speechs to be his old self. There must be a way to merge his new, responsible, Andie-loving character with the wide-ass character of old. Wasn't it that verbal sparring that attracted Andie
to him in the first place?? Maybe this amalgamation will occur in future episodes.
Rodney E: Does anyone think that teacher will turn around and steal Dawson's story, the way she shot him down so harshly? Geez, first Mr. Peterson and now
this lady set real bad examples of how to help a young person's learning process. My thinking is she wanted to discourage Dawson from submitting his film so she could take the project for herself, after all it was mentioned that she was not making any progress in Hollywood
CRLinn9505 responds: I thought the same thing, and my roomate agrees. I felt so sorry for him when she was bashing it. She made it sound as if it was all so unrealistic; when it was actually exactly from his life. If it was me, I would have busted out crying. Poor Dawson! (I'll comfort you anyday! )
Montgomery (in reference to teacher’s criticism): He (Dawson) looked as if he was going to cry, poor boy. I thought it was funny that some of her criticisms about Dawson's film are exactly the same ones that real life critics are saying about the show itself. Like "Unbelievable dialogue, no plot, uninspired..." Are the writers trying to give an "F-you" to the critics? If they are aware of these weaknesses, why don't they fix
them? It's not very hard to filter the unbelievable dialogue into something more realistic.
Annapilar: First off, just let me say that my fave couple on the show is Andie and Pacey and I hope they stay together for a while. MM and JJ have great chemistry
together and I think the writers have done a great job in having their relationship grow as well as their characters. Sometimes though, after seeing
Andie such a basketcase week after week, and seeing Pacey pick up the pieces each week, I think, what fun can this be for him? I know he really loves her and likes to help her but won't this "Pacey Witter-Hero" persona get a bit taxing after a while? I certainly don't see Pacey as being as whipped and goody-goody as Dawson described him last night during his drunken outburst. (I do think he doesn't offer as many clever quips as he did last season, or at least not lately). However, I do think Pacey gets the short end of the stick in their relationship. Does Andie ever ask Pacey about his home life?? The poor guy has to repress his own problems so he can help everyone else, esp. Andie.
I guess I would like to have an episode where Andie helps Pacey instead of vice-versa, or have Pacey have an outburst when he express his feelings of rejection, etc. Perhaps such a development could add even more depth to Pacey and Andie's relationship . . .
Little One agrees: i agree with you. she doesn't seem to think about how bad his life is, only hers but the thing is that pacey is always there for her. he doesn't seem to care about his life.. it is getting better, his grades are better and people look at him in a better perspective.
pacey is always there for andie but when he spit at the english teacher she wasnt' there for him she was too ivolved in her problems.
Brian responds: While Pacey may be repressing his problems in order to help anyone else, this is also a summary of Andie's entire character, hence her need to cut loose for an evening and free her id. This is part of what makes them the couple they are. Everyone, including Pacey and Andie, see the two fo them as completely polar opposites, and yet when you strip everything away, you're left with two people who try to be there for everybody at the expense of their own lives. Similar theme towards the end of the 3/3 episode that lent a nice touch to everything. Joey claimed that she went to Jack because he was everything Dawson wasn't, and yet at the end of the show, with everything strpped away, both Jack and Dawson were revealed as the exact same person -- an angst-ridden 16 year old whose sole fear was being left behind, alone.
The week of 3/13/99 there was a death hoax going around that James Van Der Beek had died in a car crash.
-------------------
So distraught over Abbys death, people are coming up with conspiracy theories: Wow! I don't think anyone in Capeside suspects what really happened to Abby! She must have been planning faking her death for months. And those rare hindu breathing techniques she mastered to simulate death. She managed to pull the breathing techniques off while drunk, it sure looked
real. I wonder if the EMT's were fooled by her self-enduced death simulation, or if they were in on it. Of course there will be those of you who *insist* she really died. No doubt there will be more people insisting she is really dead after the fake funeral, with the fake corpse... That Abby! She pulled off the stunt of a lifetime. Maybe she will come back in the third season, and convince Ty the Christain guy she is the second coming. That would be funny. The look on Ty's face
when she says, "I'm not ressurected! I faked my death and I've been living in Boston! Oh, Abby, you are *just* too much! (Let me be in denial here, OK, although if you have an even more outlandish conspiracy I'd love to hear it)
TWeeder offers: They could always go the usual Aaron Spelling route .. the Abby that died as actually the evil twin sister. The good sister, oh, lets call her Gabby, is
actually living in Providence, and has recently been shacking up with Bodie, Bessie's better half. Then of course she would find out about Bessie, come to Capeside and turn everything upside down.
J0etP0ttr7 adds: Well, maybe there's really a Romeo and Juliette thing going on between Abby and Kenny and she took a medication/potion that would make her appear dead for like ??(sorry don't remember how long it was in the R&J movie) hours and will run away with him and get married. Imagine the shock late next season when she shows up with Kenny's love child. (lol) Maybe (would be best) she would be recently widowed, but she probably would not tell anyone it was Kenny's child and might try and convince everyone she slept with (humm..) Jack at Dawson's party before they were interrupted.
Jordon is a bit cynical about Dawson and Joey: ok, now that joey and dawson are back together, what will joey get mad at dawson for now?
Talula96 (Amy) responds: probably for comforting Jen because of abby's death
Rodney E: Gail - Mitch : Did Mr. Leery bring Ms. Kennedy knowing his ex was going to be there as well? I thought he was on the higher ground during the whole
affair thing, but this was a pretty low thing for him to do. Poor Gail, she desperately wanted to patch things up but Mitch is doing everything in his power to punish her. I just hope she doesn't go for a quickie with Joey's dad - that would severely mess up the whole D&J releationship.
Pacey - Andie : Boy, is the PaceMan whipped! Don't guys in general find weddings hokey and overdramatized? Yet, he goes on about it being "the
most important ritual of mankind" blah, blah, blah. Next thing you know, he's reading Bride magazine in the next episode and learning color coordination so he could become a wedding consultant. What happened to
"Jacuzzi Floozies" Witter? He's the Pastry Wizard nowadays! Andie was in sane mode for this episode, she'll be shifting gears over the next month -do you think her guilt of kicking Abby outside (sending to her death) will trigger Crazy Andie?
Jack - Joey : Wasn't this guy trying to get Joey in bed just a couple of months ago? Now he's the "totally supportive gay friend" who can patch up relationships (and weddings) because of his "feminine perspective"? I suppose since Joey doesn't have any close girlfriends, Jack will serve as her sounding board (when it involves her and Dawson).
Jen - Abby : This is the episode where these two admit to each other that they're the losers in the scheme of life (Capeside at least). Jen tried to fit in, but was rejected in every way. Abby confesses that she'll never
find happiness - clearing her conscience before killing herself, perhaps? I guess all those scenes of them hitting the bottle was masking the pain that was deep inside.
Joey - Mr. Potter : Another touching father-daughter scene. Not as powerful as last year's prison encounter, but pretty emotional nonetheless. I never realized how strong Joey had to be to put up with the high school
backstabbing. This was a good explanation for the tough shell she's put up for all this time.
Dawson - Joey : Was this the 3rd time "I love you" was exchanged? The first was after The Dance, the second was during Dawson's hangover, did I miss any other(s)? This reunion was feel-good as usual, but I get the feeling the writers are pulling us up the roller coaster to drop us at the other end. They got back together too easy. What happened to Joey finding herself? Maybe her dad being around put that aside - she can go back to being the young girl she's missed out on for the last three years. I just hope D&J can grow their relationship stronger before the next crisis/breakup.
LiamOurKid responds: For Mitch, Well she deserves to be punished. It wouldn't be right for her to cheat on him
and basically break his heart and then he'd just forgive her and life would go on as normal. He's bound to be angry and do some things to let her know how he
felt. For Pacey, not really some guys wont admit them but they are just about as sentimental as
girls are when it comes to weddings.
