Our Favourite Trivia:

In January 2017, an announcement was publicized which addressed the impending production of a sequel to the original film, Coming to America. Kevin Misher was named as producer, and David Sheffield and Barry W. Blaustein, the original screenwriters, were also attached to the project.

Eddie Murphy said the sequel came about after attempts to turn the first film into a play fell through, followed by a pitch meeting he had with Ryan Coogler. Murphy said that although he didn't like Coogler's idea for a sequel, it got him thinking about developing his own storyline for a sequel.

In a February 2021 New York Times interview with Dave Itzkoff, Arsenio Hall and Eddie Murphy said that the scenes set in Zamunda were all filmed in the Atlanta area, and specifically that the Zamundan royal palace was shot entirely at an estate owned by the hip-hop star and producer Rick Ross. Murphy said, "Yeah, his house is so big, we literally were able to dress it and make it look like a palace. That stuff you see where I'm walking on the African plain and there's antelopes running--that's Rick Ross's backyard. He has like 300 acres or something." And Hall added, "And a lake! Do you have a lake?"

General Izzi had previously appeared in Coming to America (1988) with the rank of colonel, played by Calvin Lockhart.

Originally to be theatrically released by Paramount Pictures, the film's distribution rights were sold to Amazon Studios due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon released it digitally via Prime Video on March 4, 2021. Coming 2 America received mixed reviews from critics.
