Abby Morgan, Rest in Peace:
Written by: Mike White
Directed by: David Semel
Original airdate: May 5, 1999
Synopsis:
As Dawson and Joey climb up to his room, they are shocked to see Jen there, telling them of Abby’s death, leaving Joey to try and comfort her. At school, a grief counselor talks with several students to help them deal with Abby’s death, leading Andie to say some words about Abby’s great spirit, causing Jen to storm out. When Andie finds her in the restroom later, Jen calls her out on her hypocrisy and then blames Abby’s death on her due to her kicking them out of the wedding, leaving Andie distraught.
Joey and her Dad have several conversations about her mother, with Mike telling Joey that her mother’s qualities live on inside of her. At school she confides in Dawson that she wasn’t planning to go to Abby’s funeral, explaining she hasn’t even been to her mother’s gravesite yet since her funeral and feels like she couldn’t handle it all right now while Dawson tries to reason with her saying that she does need to deal with it at some point.
Back at home, Gail tells Dawson she has an offer to move to Philadelphia to be a network correspondent, thinking that maybe Mitch could move back to the house and take care of Dawson, given that he doesn’t seem to want to work things out. Dawson confronts his father about this new information and Mitch says he will call Gail so that he can congratulate her, but Dawson is upset that he doesn’t want to work it out.
Grams tries to comfort Jen to no avail as she is in no place to hear another lecture about God. Things get exacerbated when Jen spends the day drinking and shows up back at home drunk and the two have it out with Jen threatening to move out.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Morgan happens by Pacey and Andie and asks her to give a eulogy at the funeral, seeing as Abby apparently always talked well of Andie to her, to which Andie agrees to do so. This ends up causing great stress on Andie as she tries to figure out what to say, with Pacey trying to support her as best he can, even offering to give the speech for her. The two find Abby's diary at the viewing and discover that Abby truly was an angry and mean person as all of her diary entries are filled with hate and insults, making Andie’s job even harder.
At the funeral, Jen gets up to give a eulogy and ends up speaking the truth about Abby, that she was a person with a toxic personality that stirred up trouble, but that she also was honest and taught her how to not worry about popularity, and that she would also be grateful to her for that. Unfortunately she also takes several jabs at religion and God that end up hurting Grams who had come to the church to support her granddaughter, causing her to walk out after Jen steps down.
Andie gets up next and gives her eulogy about how certain people are in your life to support you, but that Abby was a different kind of person, saying she was one who challenged her to be better, and that she will always be thankful to her for teaching her how to be a stronger woman.
Joey decides to finally go see her mother’s grave with Dawson at her side, while Andie finds Jen and talks to her, with Jen apologizing for blaming her when she feels herself is the one who is responsible.
When Jen returns home to Grams, she discovers all her stuff has been packed up and Grams tells her that her speech was an attack aimed directly at her and as a result wants Jen to leave due to her disrespect of her rules, her religion, and herself.
Andie returns to Abby’s house to retrieve the diary so that Mrs. Morgan wouldn’t find it, but is suddenly startled by a vision of Abby standing behind her that quickly disappears.

Synopsis:
A month after Abby’s funeral, life moves along in Capeside with Jen having moved into Dawson’s house, and Andie showing up at school with a new hairdo and color. Pacey’s surprise at this upsets her and she refuses a date for later that night with him and heads off to her locker, turning around to see a young man staring at her intensely. Dawson celebrates his month-long “whatever this is” relationship with Joey by making dinner plans in town for them, while Gail and Jen decide to have a girl’s night of just relaxing with good food and conversation together.
At the restaurant, the maitre de has trouble finding Dawson’s reservation, when it’s revealed that Dawson’s reservation was combined with his father’s reservation by accident, and thus, they are forced to join Mitch and Miss Kennedy at their table for dinner.
Elsewhere Andie talks with her therapist who decides it may be time to go back to medication due to Andie’s recent changes in behavior. This upsets Andie who returns to the car and begins to be comforted by the young man she saw earlier in the day named Brown.
Jen and Gail discuss how she still wants Mitch back when they realize they forgot about their dinner cooking which is now burning and smoking, leaving them to decide to get dressed up and hit the town.
Pacey and Andie hang out in her room when she leaves to get a drink from downstairs while Pacey happens upon her photo album, seeing pictures of Andie and Jack with their brother Tim, and noticing that Andie has changed her hairstyle to match how she wore it when Tim was alive. He goes downstairs to confront her and overhears her talking to someone but when he enters the kitchen he sees no one. The two have a fight in which Andie accidentally breaks a lamp and retreats back to her bedroom.
Back the restaurant, things are slightly tense as Miss Kennedy talks about Dawson’s summer plans, saying she might be able to get him an internship with her connections, but Dawson is aghast at her suggestion, reminding her of her brutally honest attack on his work, but luckily Joey pulls him way and he promises to her that he will let it go and rise above it for now. However when they do return, it is Joey who begins to call Miss Kennedy out on her empty platitudes, causing Mitch to ask her isn’t it a teacher’s job to encourage a student to follow their dreams, to which she replies that life is not as simple as that before excusing herself to the restroom where she bumps into Gail and a tense conversation is had concerning Mitch.
Meanwhile, Dawson and Mitch have a conversation where Dawson pleads with him to talk with his mother and to really try and see if there is a small part of him that wants things to still work out with them. Soon after, Mitch approaches Gail as their song plays in the background (courtesy of Jen informing the band of the selection) and the two share a dance and chat about her new job opportunity. While Mitch claims Dawson will miss her if she goes, Gail takes it that Mitch is saying that he would miss her as well, but as the song ends, the two simply part, returning to their tables.
Elsewhere Jack returns home and sees what’s been going as Pacey explains he heard Andie talking to someone named Brown. Andie appears and lets him know that brown was her name for Tim when she was little and couldn’t say his name properly. She freaks out that they think she is going crazy and locks herself in the bathroom. As they try to break open the door, Andie is confused by her vision of Tim telling her one thing and Pacey on the other side telling her another. He finally tells Andie that he wants her to choose him, that he will stand by her, and she finally opens the door and lets Tim go. After getting her down to sleep, Jack decides that the only solution is to call his father as he is the only one that has the money to care for her properly now, fearing that if he waits, she will end up like his mother.
Jen is pleased her plan worked as Gail is renewed and confident that Mitch is feeling the old feelings again, when they happen to see Mitch and Nicole on the docks, holding each other close and kissing. Back on her boat, Dawson and Joey embrace and talk about whether or not he had planned for them to “do the deed” to which he counters with asking her if she had thought about it as well, before they decide that it’s not the time and the two row home, laughing and joking.
Back at the McPhee’s household, Pacey watches over Andie, telling her that she isn’t going to lose him because, pal, that’s just not in the cards.

Essential Playlist:
People can’t accept Abby is gone. flowerc@webtv.net: THEY CAN'T TAKE AWAY ABBY. THERE IS A HUGE TRICK TO ALL OF THIS. EITHER ABBY IS FAKING IT, OR SHE COMES BACK AS A SPIRT
AFBoy18MA: Andi saw Abby in the mirror....if you watch the tape before Andi turns around Abby runs away.... she could have ran into the closet......Abby is still alive......she will be back......I believe so!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kate: I never cared about Jen one way or another, but her eulogy made up my mind for me. What a bitch. I would have thrown her out too. If she doesn't like Gram's religion, she should keep her mouth shut, cuz Grams is supporting her sorry ass. If it [the speech] was for Abby, does that make it any better? There were people there, like Abby's mom, who had no idea that Abby was a bitch. Is her funeral really the appropriate forum for her mother to find this out? Jenn thought of noones feelings but herself.
James Van Der Beek on Jay Leno
Bart262626: Abby Morgan was not all bad. She had feelings just like other people. However, the pain in her own life had caused her to lash out at others. It is sick for people to be happy that Abby is dead. Abby was like most humans in the fact that she had good and bad qualities.
BCBJ Nelson: First I hated Jen, then I liked her, then I
hated her and now I like her again. I don't want Jen to be alone but I DON'T want her with Dawson. They should write in a new character for Jen. I kinda liked Ty, although I did'nt agree with his WAY TOO off beat hypocricy and biggotry (sp?) though I guess that was the point. Joey has always supported Dawson. He can hardly STAND alone without her. Lust may be an initial emotion but love and comfort and support and knowing one another always wins out in the end..............or it should
----------------
Gene Bertst (Katie): Oh my od, I just got done watching tontes show, and i was in tears! The scenes with Andy & Pacey were so sweet, heartbreaking, and nerve-racing
all rolled up in one. The part where hewas outside of the door, telling her how much e loved her & what she meant to him, well that was just the best!! Though Iwill say that i am not a big fan f Andie's new hair, she is still the same person, so it doesn't matter! And the parts w/ her brother, Ugghhh... I was in tears at the end! I cannot wait till next week, only two more episodes left!!!
Rodney E. Can I say this is the episode Katie Holmes has looked the most beautiful ever in the two seasons DC has been on? Her makeup was overdone in "Beauty
Contest", her dress was all wrong in "The Dance", and she looked butch in that caterer's uniform in "A Perfect Wedding". But tonite's episode she had on the little black dress, her face lit by the restaurant candlelight, later by the moonlight on the Creek - in other words, mama mia! I'll admit Madchen Amick is a gorgeous actress, but I was wishing the camera would just lock onto Joey during that table scene!
Anyway, the rest of the episode was gut-wrenching although Josh Jackson & Kerr Smith need to practice their "desperation faces" when Andie cracks up in the future - you could see them trying to force emotions that weren't there. Oh, and did anyone catch Josh opening the door a crack - even after Meredith had closed and locked it! that cracked me up!
Joey and Jen seem to be cool - the old Joey would be highly paranoid at the thought of Ms. Lindley living under the same roof as her beau.
Poor Gail - just when it looked like things were picking up, they unravel. Mitch is freakin' cruel to have led her on like that and then go back to Ms. Kennedy. Anyone think they were gonna catfight in the ladies' room?
Poor Dawson - he blows his allowance on an expensive night out, thinking he was gonna get some; only to get rebuffed by "the night's still young, and so are we..." remark from Joey. Oh well, I guess it requires a whole episode (or two, just focusing on them) to lead up to the "closing of the deal".
Jennifer F: I hate the fact that I can't really enjoy Dawson and Joey being together. I keep waiting for the other shoe to fall. I mean, something is bound to happen to cause problems, and I'm too busy looking for signs of that than to watch them be happy. Is anyone else having this same problem? (I'm not inviting spoilers, I just want to know if you guys feel as I do) Just curious!
Simpleman responds: I think there's only so much that can be seen in a 'perfectly happy' relationship. For an interesting mix, some variables must be thrown in. Thus, many of the hardships and pivot points in the stories. And this parallel's real life. Life's not simple, and DC simply conveys this. And if you keep anticipating things to happen, I think the writers are
doing their job.
Mammoth responds: No I think Dawson & Joey will be in this happy relationship for the rest of the how, and in the last episode they'll get married...Of course something has to happen which causes trouble. That's just the way a TV-Show works, and I don't really think you would enjoy it if something didn't happen. I do however expect D&J will be in a steady relationship for the season out and probably well into the third season. Eventually something has to happen though, but it's way into the future. It's been a lot whining about the D&J relatioship this season so I don't think the writers dare to take it out as far in the next season.
