RW470 - Dawson's Creek S05E07-08 - Videotape Hotel

In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek Rewatch, Cory and Tom are getting the help they need to win the big prize as they discuss season 5 episodes 7 & 8, "Text, Lies & Videotape" and "Hotel New Hampshire."

Test, Lies & Videotape:

Written by: Karin Lewicki

Directed by: Marita Grabiak

Original airdate: November 21, 2001

Synopsis:

Jen tries to reassure Dawson about his apprehension regarding therapy, detailing her own experience with Tom Frost. Eventually when Dawson gets in with the therapist, Rachel Weir, he finds himself saying one thing but then correcting himself, revealing that his initial thoughts aren’t really his true feelings at all. Weir responds that the way he’s feeling is pretty par for the course, and that having little lies crop up in regards to those things is normal, but that the problem starts when one starts to believe those lies are the truth.

Elsewhere, Pacey ends up confronting Karen about her relationship with Danny, leaving her to immediately lash out at him and storm off.

Joey tries to integrate into Professor Wilder’s team who has been trying to determine who the recipient of Lazare’s letters was, but feels woefully inadequate compared to the upper class men in the group with their higher level of knowledge. Wilder later talks with Joey and gives her some ideas on where to start looking for ideas as to why Lazare wrote the letters she did and to whom she was writing them to, saying that he’s helping her because he likes underdogs.

Meanwhile, a lawyer meets with Dawson and Gail to reveal that the trust Mitch had set up was only set up to benefit Dawson and Gail, not Lily. Together, the two decide to try and see if they can find some evidence that Mitch had filed an amendment to the trust to include her.

Karen goes to Pacey’s boat and apologizes for lashing out earlier and the two have a nice moment together before she heads home.

Dawson and Jen talk again about therapy and he tells her about his struggle to find something regarding Lily and the trust. She counters that maybe it isn’t really that important and that it’s just something that is throwing him off from realizing his true feelings about his father.

Joey ends up seeing Audrey’s Hollywood audition tape which shows her in some videos in various poses and scenes that she recorded, including one in which Audrey just speaks to herself on camera, revealing her true deep feelings. This gives Joey the idea that perhaps Lazare was writing her letters to herself, a theory that the other students in the group, along with Wilder himself, are very impressed by and find most promising. Wilder talks with Joey later and tells her that it’s Joey’s lack of knowledge that is important because once someone can admit they are uncomfortable not knowing something, that is when they can truly start to learn that something.

At the restaurant, Danny’s wife shows up for their big event and the two dance happily together while Karen looks on from the sidelines. Pacey later goes to Karen and offers to dance with her but she sees Danny and his wife kiss and she leaves. Pacey finds her back at her place and talks with her, as she says she is done with Danny and will break it off with him. The phone rings and Danny’s voice comes over the answering machine telling her to pick up as he professes his love for her while Pacey quietly slips out.

At therapy, Weir starts to show Dawson that it’s ok to feel mad at his father for not amending the trust properly and while he feels that he can’t be mad, he finally starts to open up and reveal some of his anger about what had happened the last time they had spoken. As he leaves and heads to his car, Jen, working her shift at the radio station, sends out a special song to Dawson, reminding him of the night the two went skinny dipping together years earlier.

Back at Capeside, Dawson opens some mail he got and is surprised to see he won a film festival in New Hampshire. Gail says that Mitch never gave up on Dawson’s dream and must have entered him into it, leaving the mother and son to share some of their previous memories of the man they both loved.

Dawson's Trivia:

Before getting into directing, Marita Grabiak was a script supervisor on many feature films, such as Young Guns, Men at Work, Hotshots, Soapdish, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, Super Mario Bros, and Mothers Boys. She then took a job on ER where she was given the opportunity to direct, closely following it up with this episode of DC. Since then, she’s directed episodes of Firefly (episode Jaynestown), Buffy, Angel, Smallville, Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Alias, Eureka, American Horror Story and many more. She’s also directed a bunch of TV movies, many of which are centered around Christmas.

Rachel Weir was played by Pauley Perrette, best known for her role on NCIS as Abby Sciuto. Besides her over 350 episodes as Abby, she’s been in other series as well, such as 10 episodes of Murder One, a handful of The Drew Carey Show episodes, and all 6 episodes of That’s Life (a young married man has to learn to deal with his sister in law who just moved in). She was a main cast member with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jennifer Garner in the series, Time of Your Life, a spin off of Party of Five. She was the voice of Lois Lane in the animated Superman and the Elite, and was also a voice in the animated series Fantasy Hospital (Dwarves, giants, fairies and other wizarding doctors run a hospital of magical medicine). She was also a supporting cast member in Almost Famous. Most recently, she starred in Broke (a trust fund baby is cut off by his dad and forced to move in with his wife’s estranged sister).

Pauley Perrette apparently had a poetry CD out back in the day. I could not find it, but I did find videos of her singing from the NCIS soundtracks.

Robert Longstreet played Attorney Brezny. He’s recently been in a number of projects as a supporting cast member such as The Civil Dead (A misanthropic, struggling photographer just wants to watch TV and eat candy while his wife is out of town, but when a desperate old pal resurfaces, his plans are thwarted, with spooky consequences), Halloween Kills as Lonnie Elam, and Doctor Sleep as Barry the Chunk. He was in Aquaman as Professor James, and played Mr Dudley in The Haunting of Hill House series. He’s an actor with a long list of titles going back to the early 90’s. He will return in a later episode as Best Buy Employee (uncredited).

This is the final appearance of Emily, Danny’s wife.

Hotel New Hampshire:

Written by: Diego Gutierrez

Directed by: Lev L. Spiro

Original airdate: November 28, 2001

Synopsis:

Dawson hangs out with Pacey and talks about what his plans are, which for right now are very nebulous. Pacey talks a little about things going on at his job in regards to Danny and Karen but when Dawson presses him for more details, Pacey balks, not wanting to stress Dawson out with stuff that really doesn’t matter in light of all he has going on, which actually seems to bother Dawson.

Meanwhile, Joey talks with Jen about the upcoming frat party that Jack asked Joey to go to and then asks her about Dawson, seeing as how Jen has been the one spending time with him lately. Jen tells her about Dawson going to therapy which Joey is happy for and tells her that she is glad that Jen can be there for him, although she looks as if she wishes she could be the one instead.

At the frat house, the brothers talk about their main goal for the party, which is to get laid, and all eyes are on Jack who has set up a date for one of his brothers with Audrey, assuring him that he will have a good time.

Pacey goes to Karen’s house and asks her on a date, reasoning that she deserves the opportunity to compare and contrast guys and take a break from whatever she has going on with Danny.

Meanwhile at therapy, Dawson talks about Pacey and mentions how it seems everyone in his life is holding back from just talking to him like normal, seemingly scared he might break, which frustrates him. She mentions the film festival he won, and while he says he isn’t going, she suggests it might be a good chance for him to clear his mind.

Nora meets Jen and mentions that she doesn’t know how Jen can be so strong after receiving Charlie’s love letters of forgiveness, to which Jen responds that she hasn’t gotten any. Nora reveals that Charlie has been writing to her begging forgiveness, showing that in the end, Charlie wanted her, while Jen was considered the more of the floozie. She talks with Dawson about it and he decides to go to the film festival and take her away with him so they can both clear their minds. Once there, Dawson begins meeting many people who speak highly of his film and show how impressed they are with him, even the local celebrity filmmaker is in awe of him. Together Dawson and Jen check into their hotel which happens to end up being a honeymoon suite with just one bed.

Pacey and Karen enjoy their date having a great time together, eventually ending up back at Karen’s place as they start making out and inevitably doing the deed. Later, Pacey sees Karen smoking a cigarette, something she says she does when she’s annoyed or nervous. She says that this means nothing and they are not in a relationship, leaving him to question why this happened at all before realizing that she was using him to get back at Danny, and he leaves.

Elsewhere, Joey mingles as Audrey sits and listens to her date Eric go on and on about various fitness related routines, none of which interest her at all. Sensing disinterest, Eric finds Jack and asks him what the deal is and Jack tells him that he shouldn’t worry because Audrey is hot to trot and ready to hook up, all of which is overheard by Joey. She confronts Jack and the two argue ending with her leaving.

At the film festival, Dawson’s documentary is given rave reviews and he himself gets a superb introduction from the master of ceremonies involving Mitch’s part in trying to get the film accepted into the festival. Dawson accepts his award and dedicates the film to his father, calling Jen his girlfriend in the process. Later Dawson reveals that after his acceptance speech, he feels good about his dad again, able to talk about him and appreciate what a good father he was, and finally feels happy. He talks about it with Jen and she thanks him for restoring her faith in the opposite sex. They talk about why it didn’t work out for them originally, and upon hearing that Dawson thinks Jen was never attracted to him, she begins kissing him passionately and the two end up having sex.

Pacey goes to work and confronts Danny, who already knows that Pacey knows what was going on. He reveals that Karen already quit and while Pacey had planned on quitting as well, Danny still tells him the job is his if he still wants it.

Jack apologizes to Audrey and when Joey gets back he apologizes to her for the way he acted. Joey in turn apologizes for judging his frat and his brothers without really getting to know them first and their friendship remains intact.

Karen goes to see Pacey and apologizes for her words earlier, and says that she needs time off and away to get her life in order, before telling Pacey to stick with Danny because he’s a good guy at heart.

Jen talks with Dawson after their inaugural love making session and shares that she is worried because sex changes everything, but Dawson responds that he is ready for that, that change doesn’t have to be necessarily bad, and asks her to stay with him for a few more days at the hotel.

Classic Creek Critiques:

Boss6Sr asks: I'm having an argument with a friend on who the smokers are on Dawson's Creek. Does anyone know who smokes and who doesn't smoke? I know Michelle Williams does but who else? Please include the regulars and the current newcomers. And if you can supply pictures, please e-mail me with them.

Dawn responds: The waitress chic (definitely) and Charlie (possibly)

Mal P says: Michelle Williams and Kerr Smith are the chain smokers. Josh likes to puff one or two himself... as for James/Katie, that's controversial. Some have said they like to "socially" smoke. Either way, smoking is for idiots. Stupid cast. Stupid show. *sob*

Frank1252 says: I thought I read that Josh likes to "steal" Michelle's smokes and throw them away

David/Amicus22 says: Kerr Smith smokes? Maybe it's not him then that objects to kissing but

rather his partners. YUCK!!!

Christian Schroder responds: I understand you know much about social backgrounds.... smoking is adiccting, stopping it is hard, so not every smoker is an idiot. (no *i* am not smoking, but friends are.)

bunnyk asks: What cell phones are Dawson and Joey using? I guess Joey is using a Motorola

V60c or something but anyone knows what dawson is using? Just wondering.. ;)

Leigh R responds: If I remember correctly, Dawson was using a Motorola StarTAC (I don't know the model #). My mom had one of those phones and I swear you cannot hear anything on those things.

AW says: This is one thing I kept forgetting to comment on... I hate, hate, hate the fact that all of them have cell phones. And of all of them, why in the world does Joey need one? And how can she afford it? Dawson tossed in a little extra tuition $$ for her to buy and pay for a cell phone all year?

desiree2 asks: I think that Joey and her teacher should not gert togeether but by the way it seems it could possibly happen, but i want her to get together with dawson but Jen is taking that away and i am so mad !!!!!! reply with your tythoughts on this imoptant matter oh yeah i can`t wait till wednesday

Frank1252 says: I think the Jen thing is cool. Joey is off in the weeds this season. The big thing is going to be the Pacey/Audry thing

with heaven in her eyes jennifer says: i totally do not want joey and her teacher to get involved. i don't think there are plans for that, which is good. remember first season with pacey and his teacher? exactly. way too predictable!

tachyon says: The latest spoiler is that Prof Wilder is gonna go all stalker like on Joey. Still trying to get further confirmation of this.

Joey-Jo-Jo responds: No way, I'm totally digging the Jen with Dawson thing. I've always had a thing for Jen, more specifically Michelle Williams, but I've never liked who she picks for her boyfriends. I like the idea of her hooking up with Dawson, I actually like his character, although I feel like I'm in the minority when it comes to that.

Dawn says: Yeah, you're the minority, but who cares. I love Jen. I hate Dawson. I'm not totally against the two of them, I just hate that I'm going to have to watch all the Dawson scenes now. I'm fickle though, so ask me after the show Wed., and I may have changed my mind.

Joey-Jo-Jo says: Awww, you know you're a closet Dawson fan, you just don't want to admit it :) Hey, if your lucky (I'd feel lucky too), maybe the camera will be on Jen the whole time.

David/Amicus22 asks: I remember the first episode, Dawson and Joey on Dawson's bed. I watched maybe 5 minutes and then switched channels, diidn't care for it. Then one morning there was some woman on one of the morning network shows bitching about it and wanting people to boycott it. So to do my part against censorship I started to watch it. If not for that woman who was campaigning against the program I would never have given "Dawson's Creek" a second thoiught.

Joey-Jo-Jo says: I just dig Michelle Williams. That's why I started watching. Now I like most of the cast as well.

Dawn asks: even vandergeek?

Joey-Jo-Jo says: Hehe, yeah. That's funny too, because before I started watchin' DC, I got so damn sick of seeing Varsity Blues commercials, I totally hated him. I hated that line of his in those commercials, "I don't want your life" with that overly thick southern drawl. Arrg, I couldn't stand that commercial. Now, he's not so bad. :)

Dawn replies: Oh cripes. ME TOO!!!! I hated that trailer. Especially since I live in Texas, and I don't know anyone who talks like that. I'm mildly ashamed to say I actually like that movie....just a little tiny bit. Ssh. Don't tell anyone.

Cherity13 says: It was my freshman year of college, my old friends and I were separated and I hadn't begun to make new ones. I realy enjoyed the ideas that the show brought up about friends, and before I knew it I had an alternate set of friends that I met with every wed night at 7:00, I'd take time after watching the show in the beginning to reflect with my journal about what I was looking for in my relationships with others. (I had been kind of a wall flower in highschool). Over the years I lost the "special relationship" with the characters I once had, but I continued to watch it every week (I've only missed a couple of eps) But when Sawson's Dad died this season I found myself crying harder than I have in years... Realizing that yes, I still have a friendship with characters on a tv show... it's strange.... huh.

Missa Star says: I saw the preview for the pilot episode and actually cried! Seeing the scene with Joey and Dawson in the movie theater and her being jealous, was the EXACT thing that had happened to me. And, oh my gosh! I seriously bawled after the first episode because I totally related to what Joey was going through.... anyway it was finding myself in the characters' shoes that got me to watch faithfully.

Chet Helms responds to the OP: Funny how smear campaigns often have the reverse effect

(which is often the reason for them), but neither did I (give it a 2nd thought) until surfing the channels one night. My attention was caught by a common looking kid with this sterling wit and the vernacular approach of a college professor talking like a Shakespearian lothario to a gorgeous woman twice his age. What hooked me was superb role playing and the fact that it was working. Of course we're talking about Pacey and one of his high school teachers in the earlier years, and I found myself eagerly curious enough by what I'd seen to find out what happened next.

I've been watching it off and on ever since, but I'm not nearly as fond of it now. They've all turned into a bunch of snivelling 20-something's and we have way too much of that already. In fact, Pacey's humiliated grovelling over an interracial love interest has been a little hard for me to stomach, considering that the favorable effect he had on far classier women was what drew me to "Dawson's Creek" in the first place! Frankly, I think the show ended when they killed his Dad, and I can't stand the way the networks will run last season repeats and newer episodes together. It's disorienting and not very considerate of a loyal audience.

Dave admits: I started watching because I love shows about hot chicks running around in different outfits...the teen angst is a good angle too...I love 90210 and even Saved by the Bell.

I'm just glad the DC gang is a little older now so I don't feel like such a perv.

marci confesses: i started watching because i am a sucker for this over blown teen drama stuff. my life is easy compared to the torment i see joey go through each week.

Quarterwave Radio says: Joey is hot, Season 1, episode 1, joey was hot, that is why I started

Watching. The whole cast is cool and I just like the good writing.

Spa…@whatever.com asks: Right now, by far, it's Dawson and Jen! Joey seems to be gaining

weight with every episode - makes one wonder if she isn't pregnant for real?

While many are upset with Jen/Dawson doing the dirty dance, I'm all for it. IMO, she's the one for him - always has been his best friend in spite of the way they play Joey having that role. That should have been pretty clear when she ran off with Pacey! Jen's getting cuter with each episode - Joey going downhill fast. :)

Dawn is very loud and rude: ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY? BLIND? OR JUST PLAIN STOOOPID? KATIE HOLMES IS A GODDAMN TWIG. *TWIG* I SAY. *If* she's gaining weight.

Alberich says: Katie Holmes is too thin. You don't see that on camera because they hide it very well. But if you get a real look at her, like say on a talk show program, it's scary to think she's that thin. Run, Pacey, run far far away from Joey. Get a real woman like Amanda Peet or Michelle Williams or anyone else but Katie Holmes.

David/Amicus22 replies: Pacey is never going to go back with Joey. Pacey only likes older women. Remember when he was 13 and had that affair with the 30+ year old teacher?

Alberich says: Then Amanda Peet it is then. She's the one for Pacey

gretch says: We could only HOPE she were gaining weight. Her hip bones are going to poke

someone's eye out.

ophelie painted says: Pacey wasen't 13 when he was whith Tamara!!!And he doesn' t prefere the old woman!

Joey asks: I'll admit, I first thought of where this is going to leave Dawson and Joey...

But where is this going to leave Joey and Jen? Any bets??

arovo says: personally, I'd hate to see them hook up

tachyon says: Joey and Jen actually remain very good friends even after Joey finds out. This a confirmed spoiler :-)

LASVEGA…@webtv.net says: Well I think that Jen is probaly going to hide that she had sex with Dawson, from Joey and feel guilty about the whole thing, then some how Joeys going to find out and feel totally shocked and angry and it might change Dawson's Joey's and Jen friendships forever......I can hardly wait till the next episode .

Alberich asks: But can you confirm whether or not Michelle Williams is leaving at the end of this season? That's been on the rumor mills for quite some time now. Another thing. I think Charley's former girlfriend should be with Pacey. She's cool and I think she might work out. Any thoughts on that?

tachyon says: There is currently NO confirmation on whether Michelle is leaving at the end of this season. The WB hold the option on all their contracts to bring them back for season 6 if that's what they want. However, considering the powers that be are still arcing the final third of this season, we don't really have much idea what's going to happen yet. I'll post when I hear more details.

marci is sarcastic: don't forget, she'll probably make her "horrified" face and then a whole lot of her "pouty" face. i can't wait.

BRUSTROM says: Joey's going to be really pissed and this is where she will run to her professor and end up sleeping with him.

arovo says: how come?! that's exactly what joey did to dawson...! she should stop being a bitch and say to him, sex is great hey dawson, we should do that sometime. tho i don't think she should, considering "dawson" went up his "dad's" ass. what should happen is dawson goes to a party and drinks methanol, gets brain damage, and becomes a *complete* dumbass, leaving joey and jen free to cover new storylines

X iTaLiAn gRRLie asks: Okay.. I could be wrong, but.. did anyone notice, maybe a week or two ago when they were showing scenes from the next episode..They showed part of the one that was on tonight, and I saw one part with Freaks and Geeks girl punching someone, and I mean, I know it wasn't from an upcoming show or one that already past.. Because she was wearing the exact same dress, and her hair was the exact same way, I'm just wondering why they edited out scenes from this one.... Maybe my eyes were decieving me, but i'm pretty sure of what i saw.

Boss6Sr says: I noticed this too. I also noticed that a scene in the promo's with Jen and Dawson and Dawson says to Jen, "Tell me what to do." I thought that line was funny and was kind of mad they took it out of the actual episode. Sometimes they cut scenes from episodes. They do it in movies all the time. It's not really unusual.

KevinS says: I noticed that they used basically the same promo 2 weeks in a row. I was disappointed last week that Jen and Dawson didn't sleep together and I am so happy that they did this week. Where can I find a promo for next week's ep?
