In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek Rewatch, Cory and Tom get spooked by under cooked chicken as they discuss season 5 episodes 9 & 10, "Four Scary Stories" and "Appetite for Destruction."
Four Scary Stories:
Written by: Jed Seidel
Directed by: Krishna Rao
Original airdate: December 12, 2001
Synopsis:
As Jack, Joey, and Pacey finish up watching a Friday the 13th type rip-off, they pontificate on the poor picture. Joey tries to act as if she doesn’t get scared anymore and has lost the will to scream these days but Jack and Pacey pull a joke on her resulting in her genuinely getting scared and screaming.
As they joke about it, she tells them that she has a true scary story and tells them about the night she had to do some studying at the library. Despite Audrey’s attempts to get Joey to go to a party with her, with the reminder that a girl had been attacked in the library a few days ago, she stays and does some studying late into the night until finally the only people left in the library are Joey, the student clerk, and a creepy man eating peanuts and staring at her. The clerk tells her that the man is harmless but as the night goes on, Joey starts to have her doubts. She freaks herself out as the night goes on and eventually, the clerk tells her that the book she needs is downstairs. She goes to get it only to be confronted by the creepy guy who reminds her that he told her earlier that it’s dangerous here after dark. Suddenly the clerk appears and hits the creepy guy and they run to the door but the clerk locks it and Joey realizes that it was the clerk who she should have been worried about. The clerk starts to approach Joey but she goes all kung fu on his behind and knocks him out, as the recovered creepy guy, now revealed as a cop, to comment on her abilities.
Jack and Pacey are only somewhat entertained by her story with Jack deciding to tell them the story of the time he was in a scary situation. Jack and his two new frat brothers are tasked with cleaning up the frat house basement. As they do so, Jack feels very sick and excuses himself to the bathroom where he thinks he sees something behind him but eventually returns to his friends, finding that they have all left. He hears something upstairs and investigates and eventually finds a young pledge tied up in the closet. After getting him out and loose from the restraints, the pledge, Tad, reveals that none of the guys in the frat like him because he’s gay and that they only let him into the frat because he was a legacy. Jack says he understands how he feels and goes to get him some water, but notices a picture he and his brothers found earlier which shows Tad posing with the Frat House class of 1966. Jack rushes back upstairs to find Tad has disappeared.
Pacey takes center stage as he tries to up the ante and describes a night when he drove Karen home from work, only to find themselves followed by a car with no headlights on that suddenly turns them on with full brights and rams then from behind. They lose the car behind them and pull over to enter a diner where they discover the phone is out of order, coffee spills over from the pot into the floor, and the patrons all stare at them creepily. After seeing the mysterious car in the parking lot next to their car, Pacey gets angry at the customers and demands they confess to ramming them, but the owner just kicks them out. Once again they drive away and find themselves confronted by the mysterious vehicle in the road before them. Pacey decides to play chicken with the car and runs the other vehicle off the road but when he and Karen go to investigate the car, no one is in the car.
Grams comes in and seeing what the young adults are talking about, decides to spin her tale to them in which Jen was working at the radio station and accidentally locked herself out of the building. Jen tries to get in by using her ID to crack the lock but it falls inside the building onto the floor. She tries another entrance but is startled by hearing her name whispered behind her and is shocked as a mannequin falls in front of her. She rushes to the front door and is amazingly able to get in through the door now. As she changes the record quickly, she sees her student ID in the radio console as she hears her name whispered again and something crashes through the window.
As Jack, Joey and Pacey realize it’s time to head to their various homes, they find themselves a bit scared due to Grams’ story and decide to walk together as there is safety in numbers. As they head out, a whispery voice once again calls out Jen’s name.

Right after Dawson’s Creek he was in a movie called Beyond The Pale but there’s no synopsis or info about it on IMDb. Appetite for Destruction:
Written by: Anna Fricke
Directed by: Harry Winer
Original airdate: December 19, 2001
Synopsis:
Dawson and Jen return from their weekend of wanton wonderfulness and kiss in the doorway of Grams’ place, only to be discovered by Joey, Jack, Pacey, and Audrey who had come over for a dinner cooked by Pacey himself.
As the group sits down for dinner, Pacey tries to defend his risotto and Jack makes some snarky comments as Dawson and Jen finish each other’s sentences. Audrey fakes a spill in her shirt to get Joey into the bathroom where she asks her if she is ok. Joey acts as if she’s fine, which Audrey can’t believe. Jen excuses herself to go find them and takes Audrey to her room to borrow a shirt.
Pacey and Jack try pressing Dawson for details of what happened over the weekend but Dawson is ever the gentleman and passes, going to find Joey in the kitchen. They talk about things and Joey mentions the kiss she saw but Dawson’s reaction lets her know that it was actually much more than a kiss.
Dawson regroups with Jen and let’s her know that Joey knows and that she is both upset and not upset. Jen mentions how Joey did say a few weeks ago that she was glad that Jen was there for Dawson. Dawson dismisses her guilty feelings and says while he cares about these other people, he is happy with her.
In the kitchen, Jack, Joey, and Audrey discuss the events going on with Jack feeling that it’s weird because Dawson is shell shocked and talks about just calling the rest of the dinner off but Pacey tells them doing so won’t solve anything in the long run. The group convinces Pacey to just serve the chicken up even though it isn’t quite ready to just keep the evening moving.
Dawson heads into the kitchen to help as Joey and Jen talk at the dinner table about him, with Jen telling her that she didn’t plan on this and would really hate for him to come between them when they had just started getting closer after all these years. Joey reiterates that despite everyone thinking that she will spiral downward and lose it, Dawson needs a good person right now and that’s exactly what Jen is.
As the group sits down to eat Pacey’s undercooked chicken, Dawson talks about the film school that Oliver from Hooksett had told him about and how he was considering attending, when Audrey once again spills something in herself and pulls Joey away for help. Once again she tries to get Joey to open up but Joey doesn’t take the bait, simply saying that while she did hope for possibilities between her and Dawson, now with him losing his father, everything that could have been got canceled out.
The doorbell rings and Jen answers it to see Charlie standing there. Jen talks with him and he claims to have stopped by to give her a shirt back, as Dawson pokes his head out of the door, against Pacey’s heartfelt advice, to ask if everything is ok. Charlie notes that he and Nora never did get back together but he sees that Jen perhaps has moved on. She says that she has a habit of picking the wrong guys and feels that this time she did good. Charlie says he just wants her to be happy and leaves with the hope to see her again someday.
Back inside, as Jen puts on some music, Jack confronts her about starting up something with Dawson, but she calls him on erasing himself from her life the last few months. They argue about how they used to be so close that they knew how each other liked their coffee or toast and now they feel like strangers, as they sit in silence.
Pacey thanks Audrey for being there and not looking like she’s ready to kill herself or someone near her. She gives him kudos for keeping it all together and together they toast to not hating each other.
Dawson talks with Joey in the kitchen again and she asks him if he misses her and he confesses that he does, but that something shifted when his father died and that when he went away with Jen, he felt like himself for the first time in forever. He tells her that it hurts for him to be around her because of the thousands of memories they have together and that it hurts too much to go back.
As Pacey serves up dessert to mucho kudos, he promises that next time things will be better. Joey is surprised that they would do this again and suggests they might need to take a break. Jen counters that maybe if they had done this dinner thing more regularly, perhaps they wouldn’t have drifted away so far from each other, as Jack gets her a cup of coffee just the way she likes it. Audrey calls them all out on the fact that they are still friends after all these years, and they admit that it is amazing that they do still know each other. They confess that expecting them all to remain the same would be ridiculous and they decide that there must be something here worth sticking around for as they toast lifelong relationships.
Grams comes in and Audrey finally gets to meet her after a whole evening of asking when Grams would show up. They get along famously as she accepts Pacey’s dessert and bids them all goodnight. Jen relieves Pacey of cleanup duty and he heads off to join Jack, Joey and Audrey. Audrey decides to join Jack who’s meeting some friends out. Joey compliments Pacey for his ability to see the big picture and how he took a break instead of doing what was expected of him. He in turn brings her up by telling her that she is the strongest he has ever seen her, and how impressed he is with her writing and her new friends. Joey wonders how she could have thought that her and Dawson would just stay the same and reveals that a part of her was glad to get a break, glad that someone else was going to be looking out for Dawson. She adds that she didn’t expect to lose her place in line however, to which Pacey says that it’s just the truth, that things happen for a reason, despite how one may plan them for the contrary.
Jen shows Dawson to the attic bedroom, which grams offered to him so he wouldn’t have to drive back so late to Capeside. Jen and Dawson talk a bit about being afraid of things in the dark and then Jen asks if he wants to talk about what happened at dinner. He politely declines and Jen mentions that the room definitely has possibilities that they can talk about in the morning as they fall asleep.
Dawson's Trivia:
Writer Anna Fricke got her start writing the script for a film called Rachel’s Room, and quickly followed up by joining the writing staff on Dawson’s. She’s written on several TV shows, including Everwood, Being Human, and Minority Report. She wrote the short film The Trap, which was directed by Rita Wilson, and starred Jeanne Triplhorn (of Basic Instinct fame), and co-starred Aisha Tyler and Channing Tatum. Lately, she’s worked on the revival of 4400, and the reboot of Walker Texas Ranger, simply called Walker, starring Jarred Padalecki.
Essential Playlist:
Ryan3178 says: Nope, you didn't miss anything. They never revealed who was doing it or if Grams just made it up.
Gumbo says: I watched it again and slow-motioned the part where the person or dummy comes through the window and whatever it is... It's upside down like it was on the roof and swung down... It also had it's arms crossed... Wasn't a bad story but made no sense unlike the other 3 stories...
Dawn says: It wasn't supposed to make sense. It was a ghost story. Grams was trying to out do the kiddies and their lame "scary" stories.
Gumbo disagrees: Of course it is supposed to make sense... It's a story after all... All stories, even ghost stories make sense for what they mean... So it means that Grams doesn't know a damn thing about ghost stories and she stick to making cookies and tea because we know she isn't real and she has a son named Norman who runs a motel..
marci says: heard Grams used to be a prostitute and her pimp was coming back to get the money she stole when she started a new life with Mr. Ryan.
Adventureland says: Grams is not one my faves on the show. But atleast she limits her bible thumping now. Now she is an old house mother... offering more advice than asking for saint hood.

Mitchell Pilot asks: What college campus do they show in DC? The Gothic architecture looks a lot like Duke University. I know they film other parts of DC in North Carolina. Does anyone know what college they actually use?
CoolHandDuke TheBlueDevilMan says: You are correct -- it is Duke University.
LabelsR4JarS says: i think it is a college there in wilmington, north carolina ......i read that somewhere
Into Juergensmann says: See http://www.uncw.edu/vuncw/adminframes.html - there you can see Alderman Hall and Hoggard Hall, featured in "Kiss" episode on DVD, when Pacey asks that blonde Cheerleader girl to meet with him. You can clearly see the names of Alderman and Hoggard Hall, at least when you go frame by frame...
CoolHandDuke TheBlueDevilMan says: I’m sure you can, but believe me when I tell you I know Duke University when Isee it. :) Obviously, they film in several different places.
Brat17a says: yeah there is a college in Wilmington, North Carolina. Its the University l of North Carolina, Wilmington branch. They used part of that college for the high school scenes up until last year. This year they are using Duke ( which is in the Raleigh/Durham area-2 hours away) for scenes for this year's college setting of Worthington college that Joey attends. I think the Boston Bay college and area is still stuff in the Wilmington downtown area. See I learned all this while I visited there this past summer. It's a beautiful place and I can't wait to go back. If you need any more help, don't hesitate to email me or have any questions.
Mosaic says: UNCW is used as the high school. It's located in Wilmington. Duke is used as Joey's college. It's in Raleigh (I think).
Ingo says: Ah, well, over here in Germany we are a bit behind... ;) Though, Raleigh is l fun... my ex-girlfriend was there when I felt in love with here, but she was at NCSU in Raleigh as an exchange student and NCSU is in exchange with my Univ over here... erm, may be I should participate in some exchange program then... (-8
CoolHandDuke TheBlueDevilMan says: Duke University is located in lovely DURHAM, NC -- not Raleigh
Ingo responds: I know that, but there exists something like, uhm, I think it's called "cars". With those devices you can travel from one point to another... SCNR (((-8

Land Johnston asks: Why is she acting so hurt, doesn't she remember what she and Pacey did to Dawson?
Terri S replies: I called my friend and said the same thing. And why can't Dawson and Jen be happy for a few minutes without one of them worrying about how Joey would feel. Other characters besides Joey deserve to be happy too.
ckchevy says:I was thinking the same exact thing. But i did feel bad for joey when dawson told her that he can't be himself around her. i would have been hurt for that too. and i think the reason everyone was concerned for joey was because she was basically limiting her whole college life for dawson and for him to do that out of the blue would hurt someone! so..i dunno...
Boss6Sr says: Well maybe Joey should learn to live her own life and worry about her own problems instead of being all in Dawson's life all the time.
ckchevy says: but seeing as they were best friends FOREVER, its kinda natural to want to be a part of his life. with college - she will hopefully grow out of that, but until then, she is going to want to be in his life any way/shape/form...
Adventureland says: For Joey to not be hurt would be totally unrealistic. Even if she deserved what she got. It was still a painful situation. "Getting even" doesn't make lost love any less or more real. I thought show went well. Considering the tense situations. They all managed to re-affirm their friendships... with some new boundries. If only life were scripted. Then all relationships would be that easy. Ahh, reality sucks! LOL
Joey-Jo-Jo says: The part of the ep that got me all worked up was when Jack said to Jen that she was pre-judging him as a beer-guzzling frat boy. Well, duh! That's exactly how he was acting for those couple of episodes. I'm glad he's not acting like an ass anymore, but Jen didn't mis-judge him on that one. Oh, I almost forgot, I hate that old boyfriend of Jen's. When he showed up, I wanted to deck him :) From past personal experiences, I hate it when ex-boyfriends won't leave your current girlfriend alone. Grrrr! With that smug look on his face, grrr again. Would have been funny to see Dawson lay him out (yes he could have Dawn :) ), but then he'd probably just get Jen angry at him for interferring.
Adventureland agrees: I agree with your Jack comment. Jen was simply stating the obvious. He was just too blind to realize it. Personally, I liked Jen and the old boyfiend together. Note... I am not saying Joey and Dawson should reconnect. Maybe the old boyfriend should fall for Jack. That should certainly rock the little world they share. Besides, Jack needs something other than cat fights with Jen.
X iTaLiAn gRRLiE says: I don't know.. Dawson's Creek just isn't the same as it once was.. The first and Second seasons were DEFINITELY the best.. In my opinion. But i'm glad most of them are atleast STARTING to do what most kids/teenagers do... Granted, Theyre alittle late on that though. But still, Once they killed off Dawson's pops I knew it would never be the same.. or once they entered college for that
matter. I still say they shoulda kept in highschool for another 10 years. Oh well...
marci says: I'm sure Dawson could've laid him out, easily. You've seen him with his shirt off - you had to have seen Varsity Blues - the guy is built like a blonde ape. And if all else fails, he could pound Charly into the ground with his giant forehead.
Joey-Jo-Jo says: Lol, that made me conjure up an image of some animated cartoon with characters with giant heads fighting each other.
marci says: He uses it like a hammer
Adventureland says: I had a similar image. Dawson's forhead and Jay Leno's chen going chin to forhead. All in the name of savings us from garage bands. A new breed of super hero. Merry Christmas!
marci says: You are on to something. First, Jay Leno and his enormous chin and
Dawson and his enormous forhead battle to the death. And then the winner has to fight John Travolta and his butt dimple on his chin.
Wavy G says: And then Pete Townsend and Ringo Starr will have a Battle of the Bands to the Death, with their noses.
marci says: Also, in the Battle of the Bands, is Carly Simon and Mick Jagger, both
fighting with their enormous lips.
Soapy says: Stephen Tyler gets to fight the winner of that.
marci says: and then, BRS and Wavy can fight it out in a Battel of the Whits
Wavy G says: no contest
marci says: I don't know. You're both pretty funny fucks.

Steve Raznar proclaims: DONE WITH DAWSON’S CREEK. 3 Jump the Shark Moments tonight...
1. They Did It (Jen and Dawson) 2. They Did It (Pacey and Karen) 3. Same Character, Different Personality (Jack McPhee)
I AM DONE WITH THIS SHOW!!!!
IceBlast says: Well, then this should be your last post here. Whew
Darth Maleus says: Here's a fourth; me being on-screen. Seriously, I've never watched the show but, uh, is it always this not-good?
Dawn says:
1.I thought I would hate the Jen/Dawson pairing, but they just looked so damn cute, and it seemed so natural that now I love the idea.
2.On the other hand, the Pacey/Karen stuff was really pointless, and I'm mad that they wasted my time.
3.Even though Jack is being a first class terd, I totally understand why, and I don't really find it all that out of character.
Don't give up now! It's just getting good.
Boss6Sr says: What is the deal with this "jumping the shark" phrase I keep hearing?? It's so annoying anymore! All tv shows show their age when they're on for a long time.
But I think Dawson's Creek gets better each week. I do have to admit the show isn't the same show I grew to love back in 1998 but all shows change. It's all about change and how these characters are changing and developing as they get older. Do you think it's THAT unusual for two friends to sleep together? I mean, Dawson was a virgin for christ's sake! I'm sure he was going to lose it someone close to him first, rather then some girl. He wasn't even in a relationship. It's all about timing. When that time happens, you just know it and you go with it.
Sure, sex can ruin friendships, but it doesn't always necesarily. I know friends who've slept together and are totally cool with each other. It's no big deal. I could see if Dawson was with someone and slept with Jen for no reason, but I'm really glad he slept with Jen. I really didn't want him and Joey to be together. Jen is perfect for him and even if they don't go out, at least he lost his virginity to someone he respects and cares a lot about. It's all human nature...
As for Pacey and Karen...that was all about being spontanious, as was Dawson and Jen. But that chick basically jumped on Pacey to begin with. I'm sure he was hardly even expecting a goodnight kiss. But she was obviously in despair over that chef guy so she could've done it out of spite. I think the audience to this show is a little bit older and they need to realize that people are sexually active. I mean, just as long as they're doing it responsibly, what's the problem? I think the audience is just getting mad b/c we know these characters and it seems so OUT of character for them. But like I said before, that's all about changing.
And Jack...I seriously think he should leave the show. He's a total jackass to his friends and his little apology to Joey was pathetic. When people start running with a different crowd, they're going to change, and I don't see Jack as a member of the "DC4" anymore. I mean, they don't even show his gay side anymore---the arc in his character that actually made his original character interesting. Now he's just some frat guy who is really annoying. But they are all in college and people start to find themselves in college. This could be a major point the writers are trying to prove this season. I think people need to be open minded with the show anymore. They're not just kids in high school talking with big words. They're adults in college and they're actually experiencing life as ADULTS. It's just something to think about.
Tommy Poe says: Yay! No more virgins! (Jen and Dawson)
She's gone so it doesn't really matter. That said, I never found such hatred in her as other people did. (Pacey and Karen)
It's college. He's supposed to remain the same? (Jack)
KevinS says: I'm so happy that Jen and Dawson are dating now. I've been a Jen fan since Ep 1 and I want them to stay together.
AngelicPsycho xo: dating? My understanding is that there just friends and this wouldn't change their friendship at all... no one mentioned anything about dating...?!
Joey-Jo-Jo says: I thought they were dating now for sure. Dawson made it very clear that he understood it would change things, and that he wanted them to change for the better. They both said 'Let's go for it.' And Jen said she was his girlfriend now at the very end. I didn't notice any sarcasm when she said that.
Lewis Nguyen says: That is officially the most annoying phrase on the internet. I loathe it. "Jumping the shark" has jumped the shark.
I, on the other hand, loathed the first season. I didn't get Dawson and Joey (mega bitch), Jen was not really interesting at the time, and Pacey and the teacher was lame (really, if you want to hate one of Pacey's lovers, that's the person to hate!). But I loved the second season (go Pacey and Andie!), the third was okay, the fourth was solid, and the fifth has done a much better job than Buffy in having their characters leave the high school setting. IMO, of course. And adding Audrey was a great choice.
I enjoyed the coupling, but you just know it's temporary. That's what I don't like about it.
I think that's the point of his storyline--that he seems to have to close his sexuality in order to be accepted by his new friends. I personally think it's a pretty good storyline--probably the most solid story arc of the season, thus far.
Joey says: Me too!!!! I thought I would totally hate Dawson and Jen together.. and honestly, I didnt even see that one coming! lol I think maybe its because Dawson and Joey have become some what boring lately... *shurgs* But everyone wonders right away "Where will this leave Dawson and Joey?" How about Joey and JEN!! LOL!!! I personally thought they were hysterical back way when, when they fought over Dawson... ahh the way the comments flew! But then again, thats when KW was writing.. I miss KW :-(
CC41689 says: I wanted Dawson and Audrey to get it on. :( And I think that Dawson is really disappointing his Dad by not going back to USC. Mitch would kick his ass for not going back. On the other hand... Jen is sooooooooo hot! :) Maybe a Dawson/Jen/Audrey threesome in the works? I think Jen is bi-curious (and I know about these things).
Tommy Poe says: Maybe if this was truly Dawson's Creek and only his...but it's not... so I seriously doubt it.
Dawn says: He's going to go to film school in Boston w/ the other geeks.
marci says: (about Jack) Couldn't he have just turned straight but stayed nice?
(About the OP being done) OKAY THEN!!!!! LEAVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD AT THE DOOR AND DON'T EVER COME BACK!!!!!!!!!
(About Jen) Jen has that same problem that all girls have though. once she's slept
with a guy she automatically assumes that she is now his girlfriend. she never even asks to be.
(About Mitch): i don't think so. hopefully mitch would see that dawson needs to explore some other less conventional avenues of filmmaking et. al in order to develop. some people just don't agree with the "normal" way to do things. dawson might be one of them. although, it's possbile that he's a fucking loon too. did you not catch it this last episode when that one guy at the film festival told dawson about some artsy film school in boston and asked dawson to stop by? that's what's going to keep dawson and his enormous forhead in boston.
tachyon replies: They've just found an old building in downtown Wilmy that will the the site of the school Dawson will be attending. Don't yet know when this storyline will be brought in to play, but the building will be the site of a prestegious film school.
Boss6Sr says: Yeah! And take that annoying saying with you!! I am so sick and tired of
hearing, "Jump the Shark!" This bum even posted things on other boards about
shows that jumped the shark. I think he's a little obsessed about the whole
thing.
How is it that Dawson didn't know about this so called prestegious film school
before he was accepted to USC? That way poor dead Mitch could've stayed on the
show.
Those damn writers need Kevin Williamson back...and fast!
Adventureland says: I agree with Boss. The show lost a great deal when Kevin left. His
affection for the show could be felt in the writing. This energy has
been missing since his leaving
Paula Browning explains jumping the shark: it's a term used to refer to the moment when a show has hit it's peak and is slipping into an inevitable cancellation. Generally the moment is marked by some drastic action in plot or characterization that, while it seemed like a good idea
on paper, doesn't produce the desired effect. There are whole websites about
different shows and when they 'jumped the shark'
And as far as Dawson goes: It's likely that Dawson didn't do any looking. The conventional game is to go to Los Angeles, to an LA film school. This is what Dawson thought that he wanted. to become the next George Lucas/Steven Spielberg (ie. Hollywood blockbuster type). The docu was just something to play with, a bit of practice etc. It was not the style that he thought that he was going towards. However, the film festival showed a new possible path. The so called "Independent" film world is getting bigger every day. And it's the world that Dawson's film actually belongs in. And maybe him too. And this new school could be very prestegious in that world. So it fits
Adventureland says: I agree... on both counts. The indie movie is way cool... and getting more so everyday. Blair Witch is a classic example on the possibility. Young Americans was one my faves.
