RW645 - MCU Rewatch - Thor: Love and Thunder

In this episode of The Marvel Cinematic Universe Rewatch, Cory and Eoghan spark old flames as they discuss Thor: Love and Thunder.

Trailer:

Our Favourite Trivia:

Before filming began, director Taika Waititi was welcomed to Australia with a traditional smoking ceremony by the Gamay Dancers from the Gadigal and Bidiagal nations, the traditional owners of the lands on which Thor was filmed. There were also Maori Karakia from Te Aranganui at the ceremony.

Christian Bale had initially turned down the possibility of appearing in any more comic book or superhero films after The Dark Knight Rises (2012), seeing the genre as uninteresting from an acting perspective, and especially finding the experience of donning the Batman costume to be a miserable one. He agreed to take part in this film however, having been impressed by Taika Waititi's previous works and after his kids begged him to take the role. Christian Bale is the second actor to play Batman to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after Michael Keaton (Adrian Toomes/the Vulture) in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

Chris Hemsworth's family appears in this film:

  • Sons Sasha Hemsworth and Tristan Hemsworth play young Thor (at different ages).

  • Daughter India Rose Hemsworth plays Gorr's daughter.

  • Brother Luke Hemsworth plays a stage actor portraying Thor.

  • Wife Elsa Pataky plays a former lover of Thor (the wolf woman in the opening sequence).

The character Darryl Jacobson, played by Daley Pearson, cameos in this film. The character previously appeared in Taika Waititi's non-canon comedic shorts Team Thor (2016) & Team Thor: Part 2 (2017), and Team Darryl (2018). In the shorts, the character was a human roommate to first Thor, then the Grandmaster. In "Love and Thunder", Darryl is a tour guide in New Asgard.

In the comics, Gorr the God Butcher's powers are shared with the symbiote beings (Venom, Carnage, etc.) due to Gorr's weapon, the Necrosword being created by Knull, the dark god of the symbiotes. The film makes no mention of the symbiotes, as they are currently having films produced by Columbia Pictures (though one made it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), a Columbia-Marvel co-production). Thus, the previous wielder of the Necrosword, implied to be Knull, is made by an unknown and unnamed figure.

The movie introduces Eternity as an ancient and vastly powerful entity. The character was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and introduced in Strange Tales # 138 (November, 1965). Depicted as a living silhouette with stars and nebulae inside and only his right half of the face visible, Eternity is a Cosmic Entity, symbolizing not only the universe but the sentience of the universe itself. Born at the Big Bang with his Cosmic Entities "brothers" Infinite, Death and Galactus, Eternity has omnipotence (all-powerful), omniscience (all-knowing) and omnipresence (present everywhere at all times), not tied to the laws of time and space. As Cosmic Entity (metaphysical living concept) they cannot be perceived by lesser beings and mortals, assuming a shape which serves to communicate with them when it is necessary.

When Thor and Jane discuss their breakup, Jane estimates it happened three years ago while Thor says eight. The reason for that difference is Jane was dusted for five years in The Blip after Avengers: Infinity War (2018). And contrary to Thor saying to Loki that it was a "mutual dumping" in Thor: Ragnarok (2017), this movie makes it clear that Jane was the one who finally pulled the plug.

Thor's goats Toothgrinder and Toothgnasher appear in the film. These goats had appeared in both the Marvel comics and Norse myth of Thor. Their constant yelling is a reference to the famous internet video of a screaming goat. Thor considers his goats good for eating. In Norse mythology, Thor often slaughtered his goats and ate their meat, then resurrected them with his power.
