RW506 - Dark Skies S01E03-04 - Moving Mercury

In this weeks episode of The Dark Skies Rewatch, Cory and Tom are on the run and spaced out as they discuss season 1 episodes 3 & 4, Moving Targets and Mercury Rising.

Moving Targets:

Written by: Brent V. Friedman & Bryce Zabel

Directed by: Thomas J. Wright

Original airdate: September 28, 1996

Synopsis:

In Roswell, 1947, a contingent of soldiers, military brass, President Harry Truman, and Lt. Cm. Frank Bach bears witness to the arrival of an alien aircraft.

In 1963, John and Kim abandon their car in the desert, shooting it and trying to make it look like they were attacked to cover their tracks before heading off on foot.

Back at Andrews Air Force Base, Bach and company are trying to find the missing evidence that Loengard took and gave to the President, but come up empty. John contacts Bobby Kennedy and he lets John know that the evidence is under protection in Dallas, and tasks John with getting it back.

John and Kim arrive to find Jesse Marcel. While John talks with Jesse, Kim keeps a lookout, and Marcel tells John that he met with the president the day before he was assassinated. The President told him of his plan to let the world know about what happened at Roswell, and gave him the evidence due to having a bad feeling about his trip to Texas. He returns the evidence to Loengard, telling him he never saw anything like the floating piece of material when he was cleaning up at Roswell. Pressing Marcel to tell him more about Roswell, Jesse talks about how he witnessed an alien coming down to meet them, only to later see the US military attack the UFO, causing it to explode and crash.

Kim sees one of Bach’s men, Albano, after their search of a nearby hotel room once again turns up nothing. She calls to warn John and Marcel, and while John escapes, Marcel is caught by Bach when he pauses to retrieve some personal effects he left behind. Bach tries to interrogate Marcel but he refuses to be bullied.

John and Kim trail Steele to Jack Ruby’s Carousel Club. They see him retrieve some rifle shells from a cop, who he pays him off. Inside, Steele meets with Jack, telling him he needs to shoot Oswald, the man who was arrested for assassinating the president. Kim manages to sneak inside and sees the two men talking. Jack wants to refuse the order, but Steele reveals that he has been infected by the Ganglion Hive, and he starts to further infect Jack with the Ganglion presence, as tentacles come out of his mouth and into Jack’s. John calls Bach and tells him about Steel being under the Hive’s influence, after which they learn that Oswald was shot. They plan for Kim to use her credentials to get back into the White House and get the evidence back to Bobby Kennedy, while John goes to find out about a pilot named Paul Fuller that was mentioned by Steele.

Steele tries to get Bach's authorization to go after Loengard but Frank refuses. They manage to trap Steele in a room, and use the ART method to get the Ganglion out of him. Steele fights back but eventually succumbs to the treatment, and drops into a coma.

Loengard gets arrested by Bach when he tries to infiltrate Andrew Air Force Base and he confronts the captain, asking what happened at Roswell. Bach confirms Marcel’s story but adds in the fact that the aliens that landed demanded the immediate surrender of their planet. This resulted in Truman ordering the attack on the alien ship, and trusting Bach’s advice to do so. Truman further orders that once it’s all over, he wants Bach in charge of cleaning up the mess. Loengard reveals that the pilot he was investigating is the pilot who will be leading a squad for the president’s funeral. Bach realizes that the plane is likely to crash into the visiting foreign dignitaries and will wipe out a good number of the world leaders. Bach and his men head out to stop the pilot, successfully subduing him.

Elsewhere, Steele wakes up from his coma, now sporting one completely white eye, and escapes from Majestic. John escapes with Jesse, and together they try to chase down Steele, who has hijacked a helicopter. John gets into the helicopter and a fight ensues, with John tossing Steele out of it.

At the funeral, Bach’s right hand man Phil Albano grabs Kim and takes the evidence from her. John shows up and stops him from taking her any further, but fails to retrieve the evidence. Back at Majestic, Bach tells Steele’s wife that he died in the line of duty, but Phil shows up to tell him that they couldn’t find the body and that he is likely still alive.

History As We Know It:

Thomas J. Wright is a pretty steadily working TV director, although he did get his start with the movie Torchlight, which starred Pamela Sue Martin and Ian McShane; a movie about 80’s cocaine addiction and the effect it has on a marriage. He’s directed episodes of The Twilight Zone, Highlander, Space: Above and Beyond, The Pretender, X-Files, Dark Angel, Taken, Dinotopia, Smallville, Alias, and many other shows and TV movies.

Jack Leon Ruby April 25, 1911 – January 3, 1967) was an American nightclub owner and alleged associate of the Chicago Outfit (Chicago Mafia, Al Capone) who murdered Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24, 1963, two days after Oswald was accused of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. A Dallas jury found Ruby guilty of murdering Oswald and sentenced him to death. Ruby's conviction was later appealed, and he was to be granted a new trial; however, he became ill in prison and died of a pulmonary embolism from lung cancer on January 3, 1967. It is not known why he shot Oswald.

In September 1964, the Warren Commission concluded that Ruby acted alone in killing Oswald, shooting him on impulse, and out of grief over Kennedy's assassination. These findings were challenged by various critics who suggest that Ruby was involved with major figures in organized crime and that he was acting as part of an overall plot surrounding the assassination of Kennedy.

Majestic 12 was reportedly created by Truman in 1947 under the direction of Vannevar Bush, an inventor and engineer and also part of The Manhattan Project. In 1984, documentarian Jaime Shandera claims to have received mysterious documents at his home purporting to be files taken from MJ12. People have debunked them over the years, stating that the verbiage used is not consistent with military organizations and mistakes in rankings of several officers.

James Forestall February 15, 1892 – May 22, 1949 The first US secretary of defense 1949 resigned due to Truman wanting him out, concerning mental condition and was always opposing his policies. He killed himself by jumping out a window at Walter Reed hospital from the 16th floor.

Mercury Rising:

Written by: James D. Parriott

Directed by: Tucker Gates

Original airdate: October 19, 1996 (3 week break)

Synopsis:

Months after President Kennedy’s funeral, John and Kim drive towards Cape Canaveral, Florida. Kim feels a pull to go there, while the news reports on yet another failed mission to get pictures of the lunar surface. Kim awakens in the middle of the night to see a vision of an astronaut telling her that they have to help each other, as he reaches out his hand. Kim tries to grab it but is unable to reach it.

The next day, Kim absentmindedly draws on the map, sketching a perfect copy of the crop circle John investigated months ago. Kim explains that she has no idea how she came up with the design, as they are suddenly pulled over by a cop. John suspects that it is actually a Majestic agent and smashes into the police car before peeling off. John suggests changing their route but Kim is adamant they go to Florida, explaining her visions of the astronaut.

Eventually they arrive at a motel outside of Cape Canaveral in Florida, and Kim sees a man on a motorcycle, feeling the pull towards him. As she approaches him in a bar, he recognizes her and reaches out and comments that she is actually real, suggesting he has had visions of her as well. A man named Gary arrives and tells the man, Ty, he needs to go, but he leaves a note with a crop circle drawing asking her to meet him later. The man behind the bar explains that they were Air Force pilots, as Kim reveals that Ty was with her when she was abducted.

Meanwhile One Eyed Steele is tracking down Kim and John.

Back at the hotel, they see that Bach and company have arrived, and John suggests they find a more secluded room. Kim is adamant that they go meet Ty, that she and her fellow abductee need each other, and that it’s the only way to find out what is happening to her. At the rendezvous however, as Kim walks away to find him, the man appears and attacks John for being a suit, but Kim defends her boyfriend. They talk with Ty, who tells them they work for a black ops organization who were launched into space to take out a Russian spy satellite known as Black Knight. As they were preparing to fire a missile at it, they found they had blacked out and lost two hours of time, with Black Knight mysteriously gone. He invites Kim to talk to his doctor, who asks her if she will undergo regression therapy, a technique she tried with Ty to figure out what happened, but thus far has failed.

Kim undergoes the therapy and begins recalling the events of her abduction, feeling as if she’s floating, seeing the aliens around her, and then focusing a light on her and the man in a space suit next to her, Ty himself. Before she can reach his hand however, he begins floating away as the aliens mentally tell Kim that he is not wanted, whereas she is. They grab her head and implant a ganglion inside her, as she wakes up from the hypnosis.

The doctor remains a skeptic, suggesting further professional help. John is aghast she needs any further proof. He reasons that the following day's launch that Ty will be aboard, must have something to do with the Greys, considering Majestic’s involvement.

Meanwhile One Eyed Steele is still tracking down Kim and John, killing a couple who unfortunately rented the room Kim and John had the previous night.

The next day at the launch, Kim awakens from a nap in the car, having dreamt of the abduction and remembering more details. She sees one more astronaut, Ty’s partner Gary, who was likely implanted after Ty was rejected. They reason that both men were cleared for duty, but then wonder who actually cleared them. The couple breaks through the guard checkpoint and makes their way to the launch area for the rocket. Bach tells his men to kill the pursuit and just continue the countdown, but John calls in from the launch area and explains about Gary being implanted. Bach looks into who cleared the men, and it turns out to be Steele, causing Bach to quickly halt the launch. Under Henry Kissinger’s advice, reasoning that the two saved them millions of dollars, Bach lets John and Kim go and sends Phil to arrest Gary. The rocket is then sent up with its backup pilots and successfully transmits a picture of the lunar surface. The images show not just the moon, but a triangular ship-like object with the crop circle marking inscribed on it. A press release is then sent out revealing that this 6th ranger mission has also failed to produce any lunar images, and has put a pause on the program.

History As We Know It:

James D. Parriott should be a familiar name to long-time Rewatch listeners. He was the creator of Voyagers! He was also the credited executive producer on the show, wrote many episodes, and even directed an episode.

Tucker Gates got his directing start on 21 Jump Street back in the 80’s. He’s gone on to a very successful TV directing career, including shows such as The X-Files, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Roswell, CSI, CSI Miami, Weeds, Heroes, The Office, The Good Place, and Bates Motel. He’s currently working on a show called Surface, but not the one you think.

Ranger 7 would be the first mission to transmit moon surface images successfully. The previous Ranger missions did all fail for one reason or another.

Henry Alfred Kissinger, born May 27, 1923 is a German-born American politician, diplomat, and geopolitical consultant who served as United States Secretary of State and National Security Advisor under the presidential administrations of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford and received the Nobel peace prize for negotiating a ceasefire in the Vietnam War, although two members of the committee resigned in protest.

The Black Knight satellite conspiracy theory claims that a spacecraft of extraterrestrial origin is in near-polar orbit of the Earth, and that NASA is covering up its existence and origin. The origin of the Black Knight legend is often "retrospectively dated" back to natural extraterrestrial repeating sources supposedly heard during the 1899 radio experiments of Nikola Tesla. Space debris photographed in 1998 has been widely claimed to be the Black Knight satellite. Space journalist James Oberg considers it probable that the photographs are of a thermal blanket that was confirmed as lost during another mission.

RW505 - Texas Chainsaw Rewatch - Texas Chainsaw 3D

In this episode of The Texas Chainsaw Rewatch, Cory and Eoghan have things to do with their cuz as they discuss "Texas Chainsaw 3D."

Trailer:

Our Favourite Trivia:

In 2007, Platinum Dunes announced they were abandoning the series following The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006). In 2009, Twisted Pictures negotiated a multi-picture deal with Robert Kuhn and Kim Henkel, who own the rights to the series.

In May 2011, Lionsgate announced that it would be partnering with Nu Image to produce the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and that John Luessenhop would direct the film.

Originally, a plan for a new trilogy was pitched. The films would be released out of chronological order, with the second film coming out first and being set almost entirely in a hospital. The next film would be a prequel explaining the events that led up to the hospital scenario. The third film would complete the storyline. Fearing it was too ambitious and risky, the producers opted for a follow up to the original instead.

Texas Chainsaw was filmed in Shreveport, Louisiana. The only other instalment to be filmed outside of Texas was Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, which was filmed in California.

Returning cast members:

Bill Mosley as Drayton Sawyer, originally played Chop Top

Gunnar Hansen as Boss Sawyer, originally played Leatherface

Marlyn Burns as Verna, originally played Sally Hardesty

John Dugan as Grandpa

Sheriff Hooper is named after Tobe Hooper, the creator of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).

In an interview with Collider, Alexandra Daddario said she didn't want to say the line "Do your thing, cuz," because she felt it was too silly. Then the producer told her the entire movie is supposed to be silly, so she ended up saying it.

What's Up Next?

Following the formula previously established, we go from redo to prequel, let's find out where cuz got his money in Leatherface.

RW504 - Dark Skies S01E01-02 - The Awakening

In this weeks episode of The Dark Skies Rewatch, Cory and Tom are digging deep into the files and uncovering the truth as they discuss the pilot episodes, The Awakening Parts 1-2.

The Awakening:

Written by: Brent V. Friedman & Bryce Zabel

Directed by: Tobe Hooper

Original airdate: September 21, 1996

Synopsis:

American pilot Gary Powers, flying a reconnaissance mission into Russia, encounters a UFO and crashes behind enemy lines in 1960.

A year later, John Loengard and his girlfriend Kim Sayers begin working for the US government, with John eager for any work at all. He’s given the job of looking into redundant government agencies that might be cut in order to save money, the first of which is Project Blue Book which deals with UFO sightings. After meeting with Betty and Barney Hill, two self proclaimed alien abductees, and hearing their story, he is assaulted by some men who had bugged the Hill’s home. The men are led by someone named Captain, and Loengard is left shaken by his words to forget the assault ever happened and to mind his own business. When Loengard goes to work the next day, he sees a report on his desk saying that Project Blue Book is fine and not worth anyone’s attention. John has apparently signed it, even though he did not write it.

Loengard begins investigating the Captain, eventually discovering his name as Frank Bach. He later confronts Bach after Gary Powers is finally released by the Russians at a press event. Loengard tries to bluff information out of Bach, but Bach turns it around, offering him the truth, and warning that it comes with a price. He takes Loengard to a secret location and reveals the existence of an alien material he conceals around his neck, and an actual dissected alien corpse. Bach welcomes Loengard to the secret agency known as Majestic, saying that there is no going back now.

Loengard’s first assignment is to go investigate a farmer who has discovered a crop circle in his field, but while examining it, the farmer becomes erratic and tries to kill him. Bach and his men come to his rescue, killing the farmer. During the autopsy, a squid-like alien emerges from the farmer and tries to attack several men but is eventually contained. Bach mentions that it matches a specimen they found inside the aliens, known as The Greys, during the 1947 Roswell UFO Incident. Doctor Herzog experiments with the creature, now called a Ganglion, causing a monkey to start acting erratically. The chimp ends up escaping its cage, and actually thinking strategically, grabs a gun and shoots one of the Majestic agents.

Loengard’s boss, Senator Pratt, begins talking with Kim and questioning her about John’s activities. This later leads her to ask John why he seems to be lying and appearing distant. The two argue and end up sleeping apart from each other, only for Kim to awaken in the middle of the night to several aliens surrounding her, and quickly abducting her from the home. She wakes the next morning tired, confused and with a bloody nose.

Elsewhere, a group headed by Bach discuss the monkey incident, and it’s believed The Greys at Roswell were hosts to the Ganglion, controlled by them to do their bidding. A procedure is described about how to extract a ganglion from a host, but it has always been fatal. Doctor Herzog has another non-fatal procedure, but it is in its early stages at this point.

Amidst the Cuban Missile Crisis, Kim keeps feeling off, not remembering the abduction. Loengard confronts Bach about the crisis, reasoning that if President Kennedy and Russian President Kruschev knew about the existence of aliens, they wouldn’t be putting the world into such dire straits with their weapons. Bach says that the President knows what he needs to know, explaining that the previous president gave Majestic the authority to decide which president should be let in on all the secrets.

Pratt meanwhile shows up at Kim’s place and begins explaining the alien singularity that is coming, revealing that he has also been possessed by a Ganglion. John returns home and the two fight, with Pratt falling out a window and dying on the ground far below. John rushes Kim to Doctor Herzog and begs him for the alternate procedure which involves several chemicals. They go to an abandoned house where John tries the procedure, but Kim fights against him, becoming more influenced by the Ganglion. Eventually the alien exits her body and John kills it, saving her. Loengard tells Bach he wants out of the agency but is denied yet again.

John and Kim devise a plan for Kim, who has been working with the First Lady, Jackie Kennedy, to get proof of alien existence to the president himself. The president’s brother and State Attorney General summons John to talk with him about the evidence, commenting that the president cannot act on it right now because he is up for re-election and needs to focus on that, but after that, he will do something about it. Unfortunately, their meeting has been surveilled by Bach and company, and days later the president is assassinated. John and Kim decide to go on the run, hoping to get the truth out there while avoiding Bach and Majestic.

Gary Powers

Born: August 17, 1929

Died: August 1, 1977

Francis Gary Powers was an American pilot whose Central Intelligence Agency Lockheed U-2 spy plane was shot down while flying a reconnaissance mission in Soviet Union airspace, causing the 1960 U-2 incident. He later worked as a helicopter pilot for KNBC in Los Angeles and died in a 1977 helicopter crash.

The primary mission of the U-2s was overflying the Soviet Union. Soviet intelligence had been aware of encroaching U-2 flights at least since 1958 if not earlier but lacked effective countermeasures until 1960.

Powers was shot down by an S-75 Dvina surface-to-air missile over Sverdlovsk. A total of 14 Dvinas were launched.

When the U.S. government learned of Powers's disappearance over the Soviet Union, they lied that a "weather plane" had strayed off course after its pilot had "difficulties with his oxygen equipment". What CIA officials did not realize was that the plane crashed almost fully intact and that the Soviets had recovered its pilot and the plane's equipment, including its top-secret high-altitude camera. Powers was interrogated extensively by the KGB for months before he made a confession and a public apology for his part in espionage.

The CIA, in particular, chief of CIA Counterintelligence James Jesus Angleton, opposed exchanging Powers for Soviet KGB Colonel William Fisher, known as "Rudolf Abel", who had been caught by the FBI and tried and jailed for espionage. They thought Powers was defecting to Russia. Barbara Powers, the wife of Gary Powers, was often drinking and allegedly having affairs. To avoid bad publicity for the wife of the well-known CIA operative, doctors tasked by the CIA to keep Barbara out of the limelight arranged to have her committed to a psychiatric ward in Augusta, Georgia, under strict supervision. The CIA feared that Gary Powers languishing in Soviet prison might learn of Barbara's plight and as a result reach a state of desperation causing him to reveal to the Soviets whatever secrets he had not already revealed. Thus, Barbara unwittingly may have aided the cause of the approval of the prisoner exchange

Powers initially received a cold reception on his return home. He was criticized for not activating his aircraft's self-destruct charge to destroy the camera, photographic film, and related classified parts. He was also criticized for not using a CIA-issued "suicide pill" to kill himself. He would later divorce and remarry, having one child.

Barney and Betty Hill

Barney Hill Jr.: July 20, 1922 Died February 25, 1969

Eunice Elizabeth Barrett: June 28, 1919 Died October 23, 2004

Barney and Betty Hill were an American couple who claimed they were abducted by extraterrestrials in a rural portion of the state of New Hampshire from September 19 to 20, 1961. It was the first widely publicized report of an alien abduction in the United States

The incident came to be called the "Hill Abduction" and the "Zeta Reticuli Incident" because the star map shown to Betty Hill could possibly be the Zeta Reticuli system according to some researchers. Their story was adapted into the best-selling 1966 book The Interrupted Journey and the 1975 television film The UFO Incident. Most of Betty Hill's notes, tapes, and other items have been placed in the permanent collection at the University of New Hampshire, her alma mater.

Arriving home at about dawn, the Hills assert that they had some odd sensations and impulses they could not readily explain: Betty insisted their luggage be kept near the back door rather than in the main part of the house. Their watches would never work again. Barney said that the leather strap for the binoculars was torn, though he could not recall it tearing. The toes of his best dress shoes were scraped. Barney says he was compelled to examine his genitals in the bathroom, though he found nothing unusual. They took long showers to remove possible contamination and each drew a picture of what they had observed.

Betty’s dress was torn at the hem, zipper and lining. Later, when she retrieved the items from her closet, she noted a pinkish powder on her dress. She hung the dress on her clothesline and the pink powder blew away, but the dress was irreparably damaged.

There were shiny, concentric circles on their car's trunk that had not been there the previous day. Betty and Barney experimented with a compass, noting that when they moved it close to the spots, the needle would whirl rapidly. But when they moved it a few inches away from the shiny spots, it would drop down.

Debunkers point to an Outer Limits show that aired a week before the incident that had similar looking aliens.

Mac Brazel is mentioned in connection with Roswell. The Roswell incident occurred amid the flying saucer craze of 1947. On Saturday night, July 5, 1947, rancher W.W. "Mac" Brazel made a trip from his remote ranch into town, Corona, New Mexico. Brazel connected debris he'd found tinfoil, rubber, and thin wooden beams scattered across a square mile of the ranch three weeks earlier with the flying disks in the news. The government said it was part of a weather balloon, however in 1979, the official in charge of the investigation, Major Jesse Marcel said: "They wanted some comments from me, but I wasn't at liberty to do that. So, all I could do is keep my mouth shut. And General Ramey is the one who discussed – told the newspapers, I mean the newsman, what it was, and to forget about it. It is nothing more than a weather observation balloon. Of course, we both knew differently.”

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 35-day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, which escalated into an international crisis when American deployments of missiles in Italy and Turkey were matched by Soviet deployments of similar ballistic missiles in Cuba. Despite the short time frame, the Cuban Missile Crisis remains a defining moment in US national security and nuclear war preparation. The confrontation is often considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war.

Cuba's alliance with the Soviet Union was the main reason the United States viewed Castro as a security threat–a fear that was arguably vindicated during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Pretty quickly, it became clear that the reforms that the Cuban revolutionaries were determined to undertake would harm U.S. business interests on the island. A series of escalating confrontations drove the U.S. and Cuban governments apart, and Castro turned instead to the United States’ greatest rival and enemy, the Soviet Union, for support.

After several days of tense negotiations, an agreement was reached between Kennedy and Khrushchev and weapons were disarmed.

The Warren Commission, named after Chief Justice Earl Warren, was to investigate the assassination. Its 888-page final report concluded that President Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald and that Oswald acted entirely alone and also concluded that Jack Ruby acted alone when he killed Oswald two days later. The Commission's findings have proven controversial and have been both challenged and supported by later studies.

Allen Dulles was on the commission and is seen in the opening moments of the episode. HE was a reshoot due to the original actor (Paul Gleason) in heavy makeup and prosthetics not looking quite close enough to Nelson Rockefeller. Also reshot was the scene where Loengard gets orders about the Crop Circles.

RW503 - Texas Chainsaw Rewatch - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

In this episode of The Texas Chainsaw Rewatch, Cory and Eoghan take the torturous trek through their discussion of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning."

Trailer:

Our Favourite Trivia:

Producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller decided not to make a sequel to the 2003 movie. But the fans kept coming to them, asking how the family got that way and wanting to know several unanswered questions in the 2003 version (some of them include how Monty lost both of his legs, to how Sheriff Hoyt lost his front teeth, and how Leatherface got his nickname). And after a meeting with Michael Bay, they let Sheldon Turner write the script for a prequel and they were prepared to make it.

New Line had to pay $3 million more than it expected to in order to keep the series in the studio fold after Dimension Films made a pricey deal with original rights holders Tobe Hooper, Kim Henkel and Robert Kuhn.

The cow that gets hit by the jeep was made of fiberglass and filled with blood, fake entrails and fake bones then screwed together

Matt Bomer's head was actually wrapped in cellophane. They left a small gap opening at the bottom of Matt's chin for him to breathe but that didn't help much, so when ever he was having trouble breathing he would indicate by knocking his knees together

According to producer Brad Fuller, the film was given an NC-17 by the MPAA, and a total of 17 scenes had to be edited in order to get an R rating.

What's Up Next?

A more modern or trendy tangent to the timeline takes us to a direct sequel to the original film with Texas Chainsaw 3D.
