RW736 - April Fool's Day Rewatch - April Fool's Day (1986)

In this episode of The April Fool's Day Rewatch, Cory and Eoghan find the pranks quite extreme as they discuss April Fool's Day (1986).

Our Favourite Trivia:

Clayton Rohner and Deborah Goodrich previously worked together in the movie Just One Of The Guys where Clayton's character had a crush on Deborah's character.

At the film's beginning, Griffin O'Neal's Skip character is blamed for a prank-turned-accident that leaves a ferryman disfigured. In a bizarre case of life imitating art, O'Neal was indicted on manslaughter charges the following year for a drug-induced boating mishap that resulted in the death of Francis Ford Coppola's son Gian-Carlo Coppola.

There are several clues through the film which foreshadow the twist ending: 1. In the very first scene, Muffy can be seen propping open the window in the cellar through which Kit and Rob crawl in and discover the clues. This was deliberate and crucial to the climax she had planned. 2. Nan says she met Muffy in the Drama Society. Her acting ability proved to be a vital asset in order to portray her fictitious twin sister, Buffy. 3. Deborah Foreman's nails are painted red through the entirety of the movie, a subtle clue that Muffy and Buffy are the same person. 4. Muffy/Buffy announces that the water main must be broken; however, later in the evening, when Nikki is packing her bags, she absent-mindedly turns on the sink and gets sprayed in the face with water, a clear indication that the water is working fine. 5. All the kills are off screen

An additional final sequence in the film, present in Walton's original cut, had the group leaving the island, and Skip enacting an actual murder of Muffy, wanting to take their familial inheritance for himself. Paramount executives disliked this dark turn, and mandated that this final sequence be excised so that the film could end on a high note, with the characters celebrating after the revelation of Muffy's elaborate prank.

Another scripted ending saw everyone leave Muffy’s house, then they plot to prank her back. However, she is tipped off by the ferryman who overhears the scheme. Their prank to scare her supposedly fails, but one of them emerges behind her to cut her throat, but this too is a prank. The sequence was thought to be too long, so producer Frank Mancuso Jr. tacked on the similar yet shorter ending.
