In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek Rewatch, Cory and Tom find fun and fights as they discuss season 1 episodes 10 & 11 "Double Date" and "The Scare."
Double Date:
Written by: John Harmon Feldman
Directed by: David Semel
Original airdate: April 28, 1998 (about 6 week break)
As Dawson continues his lamentations about the breakup, Joey explains what he should be focused on, namely: to avoid the girls who want to offer their special kind of sympathy, be prepared for others guys coming to see Jen, and to decide if he and Jen can actually be friends after this. Indeed when Jen asks that exact question later on, Dawson avoids it and goes to Pacey who offers a plan to get Jen back, starting with Dawson telling her that it is no big deal to be friends, which he does, and then promptly learns from her that she has a date with Cliff this weekend. Dawson, thinking on his feet asks if she wants to make it a double date, to show there are no. hard feelings, to which she agrees, leaving Dawson to ask out a classmate as his date. Who is at first reluctant due to his fresh breakup, but then agrees.
Meanwhile, Mitch answers the phone at home to find it is Bob from the station calling to ask Gail something about work. She quickly cuts the conversation short but the mood of the morning is already ruined as Mitch tells Gail it better not happen again. Later on Mitch talks to Dawson, asking if there were any calls, and while Dawson first says no, explaining that he always leaves a note if there was, Mitch makes it clear WHO he is asking about to which an uncomfortable Dawsons responds with no, he didn’t call.
At school, Pacey has failed a biology midterm and thus has been asked but he teacher to do a special project in order to bring his grade up, to which he agrees to but is disgusted when he learns that it is a joint project involving Joey, who also shares her similar revulsion. Nevertheless the two begin their work over the course of the next few days, ending with them having to go and look for new snail specimens after Pacey accidentally killed their current ones. This leads to some shenanigans in which they have to retrieve their boat, getting wet from the creek, and Pacey starting to develop feelings for her.
Dawson’s double date with his classmate Mary Beth, and Cliff and Jen ends up being more of a pissing contest between the two young men as they try to best each other at a carnival game with Dawson taking the win. This leads him to speak with Mary Beth to tell her that her fears were correct, that he is still hung up on Jen. Mary Beth admits a crush on Cliff and the two work out a plan in which Dawson and Jen end up together on the Ferris wheel with Cliff and Mary Beth together in another car as well. Dawson confronts Jen about her breakup speech in which she said she needed time alone, and if she allowed the double date because she needed to seem as much as he needs to see her, to which she doesn’t answer.
Heartbroken, Dawson ends up sitting alone when he sees Pacey and Joey come to check out the carnival. Pacey takes Dawson aside and asks if he would be ok with him kissing Joey, admitting his feelings, to which Dawson gives the ok somewhat hesitantly. Back at Joey’s house, Pacey goes in and gives Joey a kiss, but she pulls away quickly, confused. He explains he had a great time doing the project with her and felt attraction, to which she says she had a great time too but that was it and she goes inside.
Dawson, at home alone, ends up going out to the video store where Pacey is at work and says he changed his mind and isn’t ok with him kissing Joey. Pacey says it's too late and launches into an obviously made up story before facing Dawson and telling him that this whole experience has made him realize that Dawson needs to make a choice finally, Jen or Joey.
Dawson's Trivia:
Megahn Perry played Mary Beth. She has a good couple handfuls of roles but they’re all as secondary characters, occasionally a higher up supporting cast member. She also has no IMDB picture so it probably isn’t her main work. She was in The Perfect Host with David Hyde Pierce, The Convent, and a short called Keller and Sullivan. Her latest was The Lonely Italian from 2016.
The teacher is credited as Dr. Rand and will return in a future season as “Young ER Doctor”. He was played by Keith Flippen. His roles are all minor supporting cast roles however he seems to work pretty consistently.
The Scare:
Written by: Mike White
Directed by: Rodman Flender
Original airdate: May 5, 1998
With Friday the 13th having arrived, Dawson goes into full scary movie mode and spends the day pulling pranks on Joey and Pacey attempting successfully to scare them. At lunch, Pacey talks with Joey and Jen about how his brother Doug gave him inside info on the serial killer that is rumored to be in the area, while Dawson invites them all over for a halloween party/seance to which Jen declines due to her having a date with Cliff.
Later Cliff asks Dawson for advice on what to do for his date with Jen, taking to heart what she said earlier about Dawson being so creative and original and funny in planning dates and he himself having not much knowledge about that “junk.”
Meanwhile, Jen finds a note in her locker telling her she will die tonight, and thinking it’s Dawson finally giving her the scare just like he did with Joey and Pacey, heads home where she gets a call that starts off innocently enough but then starts to scare her as the questions grow more and more invasive, ending with her getting startled by Grams coming in from the back door unexpectedly.
Later that evening, Joey, Pacey, and Dawson drive to the store to get the food and snacks needed for their seance and Dawson and Pacey witness a man and a woman fighting. Out in the car, a man approaches Joey and asks for directions, which Dawson interrupts, chiding her for talking to strangers when a serial killer is on the loose. Pacey runs out of the store with the woman, Ursula, from the fight in tow, the end effect of his flirting with her, and the group drives off, escaping the boyfriend.
Cliff surprises Jen with the idea of going to Dawson’s seance and once everyone gathers they start off with trying to spook each other with scary stories but the power suddenly cuts out. Dawson goes with Urula to check the fuse box while everyone else splits up and walks around the house so the episode can happen, running into several of Dawson’s previously laid horror surprises. Jen tells Cliff about Dawson pranking her on the phone with the threatening call earlier and he asks how she knows it was him and not the real killer.
When Dawson returns to the group he finds Joey gone and runs off to see where she went and gets a scare himself as a bloody Joey falls out from a closet and a masked killer appears behind him. Luckily it was all. Joke planned out by Joey andJen to get back at him, but it ends up with Dawson explaining that he didn’t send Jen any notes or make any phone calls to her which ends up with her asking why he didn’t try to scare her like his other friends. Dawson explains because things are weird between them and despite a moment where the two go in for a kiss, they pull back.
As Pacey tries to flirt with Ursula, while looking outside, they are shocked to find Eddie, Ursula’s boyfriend, trying to get inside angrily. He manages to find his way in through Dawson’s open window and starts to go after Pacey but Joey hits him with a frying pan several times before Ursula comes to his rescue and the two take off.
As the kids regroup, Cliff admits he was the one behind the note and the call, citing Dawson as his reference. But she finally admits that she just isn’t ready for an actual boyfriend yet. She kisses him goodbye and goes inside to receive a note with a small popping envelope prank from Dawson, a scare just for her, which she then resets and gives to Grams.
Joey and Dawson talk about the events of the night, specifically when Dawson thought she had died, and they both come to realize how much they really mean to each other. As they settle in to watch some TV, a news report comes on showing that authorities have caught the serial killer, the same man that had asked Joey for directions earlier.
Dawson's Trivia:
Director, Rodman Flender, got his start making a film called The Unborn starring Brooke Adams in 1991. He also went on to direct Leprechaun 2, which has an interesting history involving some “guerilla” filmmaking. He then got into TV directing, and worked on shows such as Tales from the Crypt, Chicago Hope, Dark Skies, Ugly Betty, The Office and Suburgatory. The year after directing this episode of Dawson’s Creek, he directed the movie Idle Hands with Devon Sawa and Seth Green. Interestingly, he also went on to direct episodes of the Scream TV series (the film is referenced heavily here). Also, his nephew is actor Timothee Chalamet.
The lady killer was played by David Blanchard. He only has a small handful of bit parts, mostly because he was Kevin Williamson’s assistant on the Dawson’s Creek set. He also showed up as a waiter in Halloween H20, and a character named Dan in the pilot episode of Wasteland.
Jennifer McComb played Ursula. Most recently she was seen in the 2014 movie Let’s Kill Ward’s Wife which also starred Scott Foley. She was in Zoolander as a model, a couple of episodes of Saved by the Bell and The Outsiders TV series. She headlined a movie called Lost In Africa financed by The Duke of Northumberland (a girl and guy are kidnapped, the leader is killed in their escape and the leader’s son wants revenge). She also introduced James Van Der Beek to her sister Heather and they were married 2003-2010. We have seen her before however in the Sliders episode “Lipschitz Live” as Roxanne.
Patt Noday played the news announcer and he will return in season 2 behind the scenes as a location scout. He’s been in a string of movies and TV shows as a news anchor including Super Mario Bros, Empire Records and Matlock. He also appeared in Radioland Murders as Sherwood Smith.
At the start of the episode, Joey changes the movie to Jerry McGuire which stars Katie Holmes future ex-husband Tom Cruise.
Essential Playlist:
Tory 'Lingman' Ling i thought that jen was totally stupid because i think that she still 'loves' dawsons, and joey is still in 'love' with dawson.
David Watson: I was also surprised that they didn't end up together. My opinion is that if they do end up together, it has to be after the whole Dawson/Joey thing happens, or should I say doesn't happen. Then and only then can Joey realize her true feelings for Pacey, well that is if she truely has any. I believe they will eventually end up together.
Rivenstar: Would make for a more mature relationship
Boss6Sr: They just aren't a match. And besides, Pacey was a little pushy. Jen and Dawson wnded on a sour note. Why don't they just get back together for god's sake!
Why222 Gina: I couldn't agree more. They have more of a chemistry than Joey and Dawson do. Plus, Dawson is getting so TEDIOUS. Listening to him constantly whine and ramble on about his "poor good guy" problems is getting really old. And even if the writers aren't going to have Pacey and Joey get together in the long run, they really dropped the ball on this. The tension that would have been created if something actually did occur between the two of them would have been great. I would love to see Dawson stick that in his pipe and smoke it for a while. Hopefully, we'll get to see more of this in the future. After all, I am sure Pacey's feelings for Joey aren't just going to disappear because she rejected him once.
As for Jen, or more accurately, Michelle Williams, does this girl have only two facial expressions? The happy doe-eyed one and that lower-lip trembling one? I know someone said this before on this newsgroup, but I can't help but be
reminded of a duck when I see her. And when she starts on one of those "Oh, Dawson" speeches, I just start hearing QUACK QUACK QUACK. Boring. The writers need to shape up.
Heather HeatLH Dawson - You know, Dawson's really my least favorite character on the show. He's just... I don't know, I just don't like him. In the back of my mind, I hope he and Joey *never* end up together. I did feel bad for him in the ferris wheel scene where it finally gets through his thick skull that Jen does *not* feel the same way for him that he feels for her, atleast right now, but otherwise he was a total creep tonight. Completely stringing Mary Beth along like that after he admitted to Joey that he knew it was wrong, does not win
points in my book.
Jen - Though I do think it was kinda crappy of her to give Dawson this big spiel about living her life without men for a while and then turning around and jumping into dating, I didn't have much of a problem with her tonight. Hey,
it's not her fault Dawson can't take a freakin' hint.
Joey - After not liking Joey as much the last couple of new episodes (can't even remember why now so I can't cite specifics), she came roaring back tonight. Mostly I had to admire her for being honest about her feelings for Pacey. And then there's the fact that I totally identify with the whole "I gotta make good grades and get out of this small town and the pathetic existence I lead" scene tonight. Poor Joey, though... How blind can Dawson be?
Pacey - Okay, I admit it... I really, really disliked Pacey at first. He's growing on me, though. A few things I liked - he checked out the Joey thing with Dawson first... that's a good friend. He backed off on Joey when it was obvious she wasn't interested (*someone* on the show can take a hint atleast). He was very sweet with Joey in the above mentioned "I gotta get outta this town" scene ("I wouldn't bet against that Potter girl"... how can you not *love* that?). And he's not gonna let Dawson shove the Jen/Joey conflict aside as easily as he'd like.
Mr. Leary - Forget Joshua Jackson and James Van Der Beek! John Wesley Shipp is
*the* man. Good looking *and* a good actor. Woo-hooo! <g>
Next week's episode... Dear, God no... It looks... terrible.
N.Formola: Well, I have to disagree with you here. I can kind of see where Dawson was coming from with that. He was hurt about how she ditched him and then immediately went out with someone else. I can see how his outburst would be justified in this situation. My big problem with Jen is that she really HAS been leading him on. She's been acting very coy and overly friendly towards him since episode one. She has a constant come-on, yet she keeps telling him that she wants space. That's not exactly a very consistant message. I also hate the fact that she's in tears or close to it in every single episode. It really makes her character look stupid, not vulnerable.
Montgomery: Dawson and Joey don't seem to click at all. Joey's wit and sarcasm agrees with Pacey's usual demeanor. But maybe Joey finds Dawson's innocence and idealism attractive?
Gimpy43: I’ve read a lot of things saying that Joey and Dawson will not be together for at least a couple seasons, however, it is a fact that they are going to hook up on THIS season's finale. I'm sure a lot of you have already read this somewhere. The person said "they 'let off some steam' on Dawson's bed". So for all the hopefuls out there, there you go.
Greeneye90 Feels DC needs the sexual tension/don’t let Joey/Dawson relationship progress too fast. I'v explained this to people using a *Family Matters* relation. It's like Steve Urkel hooking up with Laura Winslow. Steve has wanted it all along, but if they did, the show has lost it's anticipation. It may look for a few episodes like they'd do
it, but ultimitly they wouldn't.

Rivenstar: Wall, yee-haa...the lil blonde kid actually grew a smile in this episode! And i like him so much for it! He can sleepover my place anytime...i'm so serious, he was smiling and laughing, playing jokes on his friends, NOT complaining to Joey/Pacey, being really nice to Jen (he covered up rather
well)....aaaaaaguuugh! twas wonderful
Chris: i think these last two episode are gonna be the best i mean dawson's gonna fall in love with joey(finally) and i don't really care what happens to jen and pacey is gonna stay himself!! i mean dawson and joey are like soul mates! did u see dawsons face when he was talking about joey dying he said quote " thats like the worst thing i could imagine is u dying joey" and looking at his face u know he meant it
Breckin8: I have always felt that Joey and Dawson should just remain really good friends and nothing else. Their friendship will undoubtedly last a lot longer than any romantic relationship they might have and the romantic relationship could bring about the demise of their wonderful friendship. Lets face it, if the 2 got together they probably wouldn't last forever and I think the friendship, which might even be a more important relationship(at least to me) would not last. Boyfriends/Girlfriends come and go(especially at 15), but a good and true friend will be around A LOT longer.
ERH821: Was it just me, or was it kinda ironic when Joey told Pacey that he has awful taste in women? Was she just being self deprecating or what?
Lots of videotaping and trading going on
David Watson: I still think that Joey and Pacey will (hopefully) end up together. The whole "Death" conversation was nice but, OF COURSE Dawson and Joey would cry if they lost the other. That's what best friends do. I think that Joey must have someone who is intelligent. Dawson and Pacey both are. (Well Dawson may be more book smart).
She needs someone Who is responsible and independant, but no so much that they don't need her. That would be more Pacey than Dawson, if anyone neds to be more responsible it's him. She needs someone who has a unique sense of humor, one to compiment her dry wit. Again Pacey has this quality. She needs someone who loves her and who will love her back and not be too afraid or too confused to show it. This souds more like Pacey to me. And most important she needs someone who knows just how special she is. Besides where's the mystery? Part of love and relationships is finding out everything about your girlfriend/boyfriend. Joey and Dawson really could never have that.
Responding is Argyle115: joey and pacey are not in the cards. just deal with it.
