In this weeks episode of The Dawson's Creek Rewatch, Cory and Tom campaign for close encounters as they discuss season 2 episodes 9 & 10 "The Election" and "High Risk Behavior."
The Election:
Written by: Shelley Meals & Darin Goldberg
Directed by: Patrick Norris
Original airdate: December 16, 1998 (3 week break)
Synopsis:
With student elections coming up, Andie decides to run against Chris and Abby, recruiting Pacey as her campaign manager and hoping Joey will be her running mate. Joey, however, declines, wishing to not take such a big leap and get involved in a major school activity.
Dawson, meanwhile, is trying to figure out how to make his newly finished script have more power and punch to it, taking to heart Jen’s criticism of it. She offers to be his regression sponsor, showing him how to be a teenager, suggesting things such as cutting class, stealing small times from a store, and even skinny dipping. Slowly Dawson begins to come around and participate in some typical teenage activities, letting himself be a teenager rather than his usual mature self aware self. He ends up enjoying himself so much that he actually kisses Jen, but she says that the best thing right now is for her to try something different and just be his friend instead.
When Abby and Chris come to the Icehouse to plan their campaign strategy, she ends up taking several digs at Joey, as usual, which prompts Joey to dump a pitcher full of tea on Abby and cementing her decision to run with Andie.
Dawson meanwhile, ends up walking into his father and his mother in the midst of making out, and he quickly retreats, pleased to see them seemingly happy together. When he confronts Mitch later, Mitch explains that it was a one time thing, and a mistake that won’t happen again, that there can be no reconciliation between them. Indeed, Dawson learns upon returning home that Mitch served Gail with divorce papers.
At the school debates, Abby slings numerous personal attacks against Andie and Joey, resulting in Andie leaving the stage crying. Pacey finds her in the bathroom, distraught, and tries to comfort her, but she is too upset, throwing a book at a mirror and leaving. Jack ends up yelling at Joey in frustration as he tries and fails to find Andie. Later at home he does manage to find her, talking to her after he gets his mother down to sleep, and suggests it may be time for Andie to go back on her medication.
As the student candidates give their final speeches over the school loudspeaker, Andie is refreshed and renewed and ready to give her address to the school but once again, Abby’s attacks take their toll and she leaves again. Pacey however, manages to turn the mic on surreptitiously , asking Abby why she is even running, resulting in her insulting her running mate Chris, and every Capeside student, as her message of hate and arrogance is broadcast school wide, effectively ending her bid at the school presidency.
Jack finds Joey and apologizes for this behavior and the two talk about his home life, and she shares with him her experiences when her mother was dying, leaving the two to share a new bond as he walks her home, hand in hand. Pacey meanwhile, calls Andie, concerned, but she says she will be better tomorrow, as she takes her medication.
Dawson heads next door to Jen’s house and reveals that his parents are getting divorced. He questions whether to deal with it as an adult or allow himself to feel the hurt and shock. Jen holds him as Dawson, allows his heart to win out over his brain, breaking down and crying.
Dawson's Trivia:
High Risk Behavior:
Written by: Jenny Bicks
Directed by: James Whitemore Jr.
Original airdate: January 13, 1999 (1 month break)
Synopsis:
While Dawson and Jen hold auditions for his newly written movie, he faces some constructive criticism from all angles including Jen, who feels that he needs to cast someone who would represent a more dangerous choice, as opposed to the stereotypical leading man type, and Pacey, among others, who feel he should revise the script so that the two leads end up sleeping together, despite Dawson’s belief that not having sex is the riskier choice.
Meanwhile Pacey, fresh back from an HIV test and testing negative, talks with Andie about how everything, including uninhibited scrumping, has a time and place and he isn’t rushing her into anything.
Jack sees Joey sketching a drawing of a nude model she’s working on for her art class and inadvertently knocks over a drink, ruining the picture. Feeling bad, he offers to pose for her nude so she can finish the assignment to which she eventually reluctantly agrees.
Andie runs into Pacey at the drugstore where she is picking up her meds, but passes it off as medicine for her mother and the two end up discussing what she imagines the night would be like when she finally loses her virginity.
Elsewhere, after auditions are finished with a number of really bad actors having tried out, Jen and Dawson discuss his script and it turns into a conversation about their own past relationship and his feelings about Joey. She argues that not having sex in the script is not real life, that sex can be about lust and still be romantic.
As Jack poses for Joey, the two try to talk but things get awkward, eventually with Joey knocking over the easel, leaving her to catch a glimpse of what’s under Jack's towel. Having had himself exposed and now over the awkwardness, they decide he should stay and she should continue to draw, as they discuss their fears about sex, leaving Jack to describe it in artistic terms. When Joey gets distracted by the phone ringing, they stand up and it’s revealed that Jack’s description of sex has left him… aroused. After he’s dressed and ready to leave however, he pulls Joey in and they kiss.
Meanwhile, Dawson, struggling with what he should do with his script, ends up deleting a huge part of the script, then rushes to Jen’s bedroom, climbing through the window and begins kissing Jen passionately on her bed.
Elsewhere, Pacey has prepared a night that conforms to what Andie was always wanting for her first time, but ends with him saying that they don’t need to have sex, that this was juts a night for him to give her what she fantasized about, regardless of if they do it or not, and the two lay together for awhile before leaving the house hand in hand.

Essential Playlist:
White116 (Whitney): I love how they [Andie and Pacey] just totally relate to each other and bring out the best in each other. Okay, Abby is a major b***h. I cant believe she just did that! Awww ... poor Andie. I almost wanted to cry with her. But, Pacey did the right thing by running after her. Hes such a sweetie.
Cat1678” A lot of people seem concerned here that Dawson will wind up doing it with Jen on the rebound or Joey will do it with Jack and it is then he will discover he is gay. Honestly, I don't think anyone has anything to worry about with that. I think that the show is going to handle the two main character's first sexual
experience a lot differently than that. I think they realize how big of a moment it will be for both Dawson and Joey, and I don't think they will let that moment happen with anyone but each other.
CerealKiller responds: I also dont think it's going to be "So Dawson, now that I've had my space and we're back together, lets just have sex." Theres going to be alot of conversation and build up to it, and Dawson will almost certainly make sure the moment is planned right, and executed flawlessly .. and who knows, maybe Pacey will "accidentaly" record them .. can't think of any better way of getting back at Dawson for his little mess up (not that I would ever do such
a thing in return).
LisasStar responds: I agree. I think that the writers realize how important Dawson and Joey's relationship is. I don't think that they would EVER have Dawson or Joey lose their virginity to anyone but each other, simply because too many fans of the show are very involved in their relationship and would never, ever forgive the writers if our star crossed lovers did not share their first experience together.
Biscuit has ideas: Ah.. But this is what script writers do. They build something up so everyone is so overwhelmed and excited about it they are sure it can't go any other way, then they whip the rug out from underneath you and leave you angry and bewlidered. I would honestly not be surprised if in some episode in the future, it looks a hell of a lot like they are going to
sleep with eachother, but then something happens (probably with Jen) and Dawson doesn't go through with it, choosing instead to spend the night with Jen rather than Joey. Think about it.. Jen had her bitchy time, Joey is having hers and this would lead perfectly into Dawson being bitchy for season number 3. It's a formula! A very simple formula! Everyone's a suspect! You watch.. Dawson is next, then Pacey..
A lot of hate for Joey and Jack with Siva Z saying: her treatment of Dawson, very confusing change for her character.
Ann responding: Have to agree about Joey. Has she lost her mind this season? She is getting on my nerves!! I am really starting to sympathize with Jen. Dawson is always the person you can't be mad at. Pacey is a sweetie as always. And Andie is really kind, sweet, and caring.
Evan responds: Joey would be the worst one this season only because she doesn't seem very smart or have the same charisma as last season.
Eden Shadlow responds: I don't hate any of them really, I just dislike Jack a little. I was angry with Joey, but then Ibegan to see her POV. ANd Jen? Well, I feel sorry for her, but I used to hate her. Now, I just want to pat her on the head and say 'there there, life gets better if you just stop fucking around with it'
Nikki says: Sorry guys but I know alot of you have stong feelings about Jack being gay...I think that he should remain on the show..I mean for a show like DC to have someone "come out " as gay might help alot of other high schoolers with the same feelings..just a thought
People thinking Andie is manic depressive and wondering what drugs she had, referring to jack saying her highs and lows were becoming more intense. Tony responds: I don't know. I'm manic depressive (bi-polar), and have read some on the topic. I think Andie's common up-on-life perky disposition could be evidence of a mild manic episode, and that the lows that she displayed on the last show could be a display of depression.
It is unusual for people with bi-polar disorder to have such short cycles; people are usually high for a few weeks then low for a few weeks or months.
There is a category of bi-polars called rapid cyclers, who can have moods that last for less than a day, so nothing can be ruled out. That's unusual though.
The big reason that I said "discussion has ruled out..." is that there is a very strong rumor that she is taking antidepressants, not a mood stabilizer like Lithium or Depakote.
Otherwise I would lean toward agreeing with you I agree with you about Prozac not jiving with Jack's "ups and downs" statement, but otherwise I don't really think that Andie's symptoms suggest either mono-polar depression or bi-polar disorder -- she goes from depressed to rage too quickly -- like when she was crying and then smashed the mirror.
Manic depressive people don't swing from depression to mania in an instant like that, right? That's more schizophrenic or psychotic behavior. Wouldn't you agree? I'm not trusting that they will portray whatever illness she has too accurately. It's too tempting for them to bend the illness to suit plot development. Frankly, I'm expecting to be disappointed in this regard. Perhaps they will surprise me. That would be great, because mental illness is rarely treated accurately in the media.
Reverend Manson: Joey made a comment about what if Jack became "sexually charged" while he was modeling for her. His remark was "I don't see that as becoming a problem." Now these aren't exact quotes--I'm stating everything from memory, so don't blast me if I got a few of the words wrong. Just the way that he said that was the clincher for me. Right then and
there he was admitting that he was gay. As much as he wants her to, Joey doesn't turn Jack on. That is why he told her that he wouldn't get hard while modeling for her. The only reason why he did was because of his
in-depth description of the time where he actually did have sex (which he never did state that it was with a female). He was so "into" his memories that he got turned on.
Tabula96 (Amy) After last night's episode i got to thinking and decided that there are quite a few possiblities:
1. they could go the obvious route....Dawson and Jen. I think that Dawson has always been a bit jelous that pacey is no longer a virgin and he is, and he
wants to get over joey. After talking to jen, he thinks he has the answer to both of those questions. And Jen is expierienced and she has always wanted to
get dawson in the sack. BUT jen is trying to change, and she knows that dawson doesn't really love her. He even said don't question my motive...so I think
that jen would stop anything from happening, but maybe not...............
2. They could go the "shocking" route.....Joey and Jack. Jack is obviously wrestling with some pretty intense mental things right now (his sexuality, etc)
so having sex with a girl might make him feel normal or something. Joey is very curious, and seems to really want to get rid of that "little joey potter" image. BUT I don't think she would do it in the living room on a couch, when her sister could walk in (that is where they were, right?). but the situation was pretty intense, and it definately could lead to other things.
3. They could go the not even expected route.....Andie and Pacey. We saw them leave the bed and breakfast, but we don't know where they went and what they
did after that. Another option there is that maybe pacey wrote the note to dawson and stretched the truth a bit....not wanting to fess up and say that he
was actually being a decent guy (not that pacey isn't decent, i like him) you know, the whole male ego thing. Andie was pretty pissed off at him in the
preview, and that would explain why. I doubt it, but anything is possible.
A few other options are........No one...........I like what "Sherlock Holmes" said in his post alot....that the characters in dawson's play had sex. I wouldn't ever had thought of that. Or, maybe it was just some other random couple at capeside high, and Abby just assumes that it is one of the gang. I guess we have to wait and find out. Oh yeah....and sorry if these ideas have already been posted.....i haven't even read anything new yet.
