Our Favourite Trivia:
In 1992, Anderson directed a short film, also titled Bottle Rocket, starring the Wilson brothers and Musgrave. It was released in 1994 and serves as the basis for the feature-length film.
James L. Brooks insisted that major work be done on the script, so he had Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson flown to Los Angeles and set up in an office on one hundred dollars a day. Having never flown first class in his life, Wilson tried to exchange his prearranged first class plane ticket for a coach ticket, hoping to pocket the difference in cash instead. When the airline told him the money would just go back to the credit card of who bought the ticket, he gave in and flew first class for the first time.
The film was shot entirely in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Hillsboro, Texas. The scenes at Bob Mapplethorpe's house were filmed at the John Gillin Residence, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Bill Murray was considered for the role of Abe Henry.
The film scored the worst test screening points in the history of Columbia Pictures at the time.
After the film failed to achieve success, Owen Wilson considered joining the Marines. This was the feature film debut of Owen Wilson and Luke Wilson.
Co-writer and director Wes Anderson established such a good working rapport with cinematographer Robert D. Yeoman that he has been Anderson's cameraman on every one of his subsequent films.
One of Martin Scorsese's top ten favorite films of the 1990s.
Every summer since 2011, there has been a party at the motel where the film was made, in Hillsboro, Texas. Initially, it was concocted by the group "Reservoir Geeks" to help save the motel from closure after the economic downturn. The event helped to stimulate interest and support for the motel, and every year since it has been called the Lovely Soiree at the Bottle Rocket Motel.
