RW620 - MCU Rewatch - Eternals

In this episode of The Marvel Cinematic Universe Rewatch, Cory and Eoghan have a lot of history to catch up on as they discuss Eternals.

Our Favourite Trivia:

Disney and Marvel officials publicly speculated on the film's release strategy, with Kevin Feige suggesting whether it launched primarily in theaters or on Disney+ would be contingent on the box office performance of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). When Shang-Chi proved to be a clear theatrical success, Disney announced days later that Eternals would indeed release exclusively in theaters for 45 days.

Chloé Zhao described the film as a melting pot of East-West influences: Jack Kirby's original work, previous comic-book films (Marvel and otherwise), Studio Ghibli films, Terrence Malick films, the Final Fantasy (1987) series, and her love of science fiction and fantasy films/TV shows/novels and manga comics, specifically Ancient Aliens (2009) and the works of historian/author Yuval Noah Harari.

The Celestials were first mentioned and briefly seen in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) when the Collector explained the origin of the universe and the Infinity Stones.

Sersi is based on her classic version in the comics (a green-clad superhuman who can alter matter), but also based on the Eternal Suyin King, a Chinese Eternal working as a teacher. In the comics Ajak, Makkari and Sprite are males; in the movie, they are females.

Kumail Nanjiani described Kingo as combining the wisecracking attitude of Bruce Willis (specifically John McClane from Die Hard (1988)) with the look of Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan. Errol Flynn was also an influence on Kingo's character.

This is the third comic-book feature for Brian Tyree Henry, after Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Joker (2019).

Dane is mentioned to have an estranged uncle. In the comics, said uncle is Nathan Garrett, a supervillain and Dane's predecessor as the Black Knight.

Arishem's compromise at the end of the film, where he takes Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos to analyze their memories and judge human civilization, is a reference not only to his title as the Judge of the Fourth Host but to possibly setting up the "Alpha Day" event from the first Eternals run. Alpha Day is the 50-year period upon which the Fourth Celestial Host judges a civilization.

A tie-in webcomic was released, Eternals: The 500 Year War. It had seven issues, with each issue having a different writer and artist. As of 2024, this is the last MCU film to have a tie-in comic.

Unused ideas for The Stingers included some of the Eternals being recruited for a new Avengers line-up and an appearance from Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. There was also an idea for the person who speaks to Dane when he's about to lift the Ebony Blade to be Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, rather than Mahershala Ali as Blade.
