RW622 - MCU Rewatch - Spider-Man: No Way Home

In this episode of The Marvel Cinematic Universe Rewatch, Cory and Eoghan invite their multiversal brothers to join the discussion of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Our Favourite Trivia:

On a budget of $200 million, the film became Sony's highest-grossing film in history. The film earned $1.6 billion in its first 11 days at the box office, finally earling $1.927 billion. The film is the first Marvel Movie ever to earn $1 billion worldwide without being released in China.

Tom Holland helped to save this movie from cancellation by forcing renegotiations between Sony and Disney. Under the terms of the new deal, not only does this movie still take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but Spider-Man can also appear in future MCU movies, as well as Sony's own Spider-Man franchise.

It was revealed at the film's premiere that Tom Holland and Zendaya had started dating. This means that all three Spider-Man actors have dated their female co-stars as Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst and Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone all had been romantically involved.

On February 23rd, 2021, Tom Holland, Jacob Batalon and Zendaya all posted images from the film along with three different titles on Instagram. Holland's post titled it "Spider-Man: Phone Home". Batalon's post titled it "Spider-Man: Home-Wrecker". Zendaya's post titled it "Spider-Man: Home Slice". All the titles kept the use of the word "home" from the previous movies. The next day, a video with the three actors was released, showing Holland walking out of director Jon Watts' office, thinking he gave them another fake title. As they walk out, the official title was revealed on a whiteboard to be "Spider-Man: No Way Home" along with various mock titles.

The first trailer became the most-watched movie trailer, with 355 million global views in its first 24 hours. It was the first trailer to receive over 300 million views within that timeframe. The previous record-holder was Avengers: Endgame (2019), which accrued 289 million views. The record was later broken by Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), with 365 million views.

Months before the film's release, footage of Andrew Garfield on set was leaked. It contained no audio and showed Garfield in Spider-Man costume, leaning on a railing and mouthing a sentence. The footage led to a heavy debate on the internet whether the footage was real or deepfaked. The footage later turned out to be real, and takes place when the three Spider-Men are discussing Tobey Maguire's web fluid being natural. The moment that leaked online was when Garfield's Spider-Man asked "Do you ever get web block?"

In the lead up to this film, The Daily Bugle created a TikTok account, with Betty Brant running it.

After encountering characters from the multiverse, Ned wonders if there is another "Ned" out there. In the comics, Ned Leeds is a Daily Bugle reporter who is brainwashed into becoming the Hobgoblin.

Both Rhys Ifans and Thomas Haden Church reprise their roles through voice acting only. Neither actor was available for filming. Their characters, Dr. Curt Connors/Lizard and Flint Marko/Sandman, respectively, are represented throughout the film through CGI. This is why their characters don't appear in human form until the end of the film. Stock footage of Ifans and Church from their previous films is used for these brief scenes.

Wong is now Sorcerer Supreme because Dr. Strange was snapped out of existence and gone for five years. In the script for Avengers: Endgame (2019), Wong was mentioned to have been snapped away as well, but since this was never mentioned on screen, it was apparently changed for Spiderman: No Way Home. This is the first time this has been outright explained, though it does cause the ending and mid-credits of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) (where Wong is Kamar-Taj' contact person rather than Strange) to make a little more sense. He appears to take this job very seriously except when he's off doing karaoke with the cast of Shang-Chi.
