Tom Hanks Timeline:
Bosom Buddies was canceled after two seasons, and Mazes and Monster began production in the summer of 1982. The series also gave Hanks enough exposure, leading to his casting in guest roles on various episodes of popular shows like Happy Days, Taxi, The Love Boat and Family Ties.
Our Favourite Trivia:
The film was adapted from the novel Mazes and Monsters by Rona Jaffe. Jaffe had based her 1981 novel on inaccurate newspaper stories about the disappearance of James Dallas Egbert III from Michigan State University in 1979. Early media accounts had over-emphasized Egbert's participation in fantasy role playing, often speculating that his hobby of Dungeons & Dragons might have been a factor in his disappearance.
The film fell into obscurity for years and it wasn't until Tom Hanks' popularity starting with his Oscar nominated role in Big, that the film was starting to be shown on cable television again and even more so after winning his second Oscar for Forrest Gump, that the film was re-issued by Warner Bros. on home video which raised it to a more popular cult film despite its low budget sensibilities.
The film has been available on VHS, DVD, and various streaming services. A 40th anniversary Blu-ray was released by Plumeria Pictures on 19 September 2022, the film's first high-definition release.
