On the topic of marriage, Hanks met his first wife, actress and producer Samantha Lewes (real name: Susan Dillingham), while he was in college. They were married in 1978 and had two children, Colin and Elizabeth. Colin Hanks was born on November 24, 1977, before the couple tied the knot, and Elizabeth was born on May 17, 1982. Hanks has said that he married Samantha to battle an aching loneliness, and by the time he was 23 he knew they weren’t meant to stay together. Being a child of divorce himself, it was hard for him to accept his failed marriage, not wanting to impose his own experiences onto his children. Nevertheless, Tom and Samantha divorced in 1987. In 2002, Samantha was diagnosed with bone cancer, and although Hanks contributed financially to get her the best treatment, it was already too far gone, and she passed away that same year.

Kelly McGillis and Paul Reiser were considered for the lead roles early in production, but were replaced due to lack of chemistry between them.

According to the DVD, this film was inspired by the actual bachelor party thrown for producer Bob Israel.
