Chapter Nine 'Homecoming':

Volume: One

Written by: Adam Armus & Kay Foster

Directed by: Greg Beeman

Original airdate: November 20, 2006

Synopsis:

Claire finds out that she actually won homecoming queen, much to Jackie’s annoyance, with Zach explaining that Claire won by getting the freak vote, with the popular people voting for popular Jackie, while everyone else, the unpopular, much greater in number, voted for Claire. He gives her a copy of Chandra’s book and Claire is surprised at how nice Zach is, when she has never been this nice to him. Jackie interrupts them, insulting Zach, and Claire hauls off and punches her right in the eye. Unfortunately, this leads to HRG grounding her, and preventing her from going to the homecoming dance, with her mother sympathizing.

Nathan meets Simone to see the painting from Linderman, but then splashes black paint all over it, telling Simone that he wants to save his brother from wanting to be a hero. Simone however, goes to see Peter and gives him a picture of the painting, a photo that shows a painting of Peter laying dead on the ground, with a clock saying 8:12 above him.

Peter calls Hiro but only gets Ando but tells him he will be in town soon. When they meet, Ando tells Peter what happened with Hiro, about how he traveled back in time to save Charlie the waitress, but never returned. Peter explains his ability, but that he doesn’t usually feel like he is much of anything unless he’s around others with abilities. As Peter goes to leave to try and save the cheerleader, Ando tells him he will stay and wait for Hiro because he feels the same as Peter, that he is nothing without Hiro.

Mohinder eventually finds the boy, Sanjog, from his dream and he tells Mohinder that he doesn’t go to see people, but that they come to him in their dreams. Sanjog says that Mohinder has the answer he needs already and runs off. Mohinder then finds himself talking with his friend Nirad having a conversation they already had earlier, before he realizes it is a dream. He sees Nirad talking with his father and cautioning him on leaving his position, but Chandra is adamant he must go. The scene shifts to a younger Mohinder going to his father and excitedly telling him he read his father’s book and wants to help him with his research. Chandra however is against it, telling him he does not have the heart of stone that is needed for science, and leaves without him. Mohinder wakes up, and finds the computer before him, again, asking him if he wishes to quit the program, but Mohinder chooses not to. This brings up a new prompt asking for a password and after several tries, realizing that his father had a heart of stone due to the loss of his daughter, Mohinder enters in his sister's name, Shanti, and is given access to contact information for all the people that Chandra had found with abilities. Realizing his father was trying to protect him, he makes the decision to return to New York and continue his father’s work.

Zach goes to Claire’s house and convinces her to sneak out. As she goes to the high school to get ready for the big game, she runs into Peter who is looking at a display honoring Jackie’s saving of the man in the fire. Her and Peter chat for a moment, with Claire insulting Jackie, but then saying she’s just jealous because she isn’t that popular herself. Peter tells her that life gets better after high school, before she leaves to trade barbs back and forth with Jackie before the game. Suddenly the lights go off and Claire is on guard, trying to help Jackie get out of the locker room to safety, but Sylar shows up, knocking Claire away and holding Jackie up against the locker before slicing her head open with a swipe of his finger. Claire heals herself and gets up, Sylar realizing he has the wrong cheerleader, as Claire runs. Peter shows up and runs away with her, telling her to get to safety while he stays behind. Sylar throws a bunch of lockers at him with his mind and the two end up struggling before falling together off a balcony.

Claire returns to find Peter passed out and injured and Sylar missing. Peter suddenly revives himself, utilizing Claire’s healing abilities for himself. He tells her to get help and she runs off and finds her dad, who realized Claire snuck out and that his wife let her go, and came to find her, knowing the danger. Claire tells him she has to tell him something. Peter meanwhile, is confronted by the police and arrested while Sylar, trying to escape through the woods, is confronted by Eden, who tells him he needs to sleep, before he is attacked by The Haitian and subdued.

DL tries to get Micah to see the positive side of what they’re doing, but at a rest stop, Micah takes off while DL is in the store. DL catches up to him, with Micah telling him about Jessica and how his mom needs help. DL decides to head back to Vegas but Micah tells him that he already called his mom and told her where they are. DL begins to panic, ordering Micah back in the car, as from a distance away, Jessica takes aim at DL with a military grade weapon she bought earlier, and fires.

As we move back in time to six months ago, we see Hiro arriving at the cafe and introducing himself to Charlie, before she is whisked away to blow out the candles on her birthday cake. The other waitress puts a birthday hat on Hiro and he joins Charlie for a picture that will end up on the wall of the cafe, waiting for Ando to find six months later.

Volume: One

Written by: Aron Eli Coleite

Directed by: Allan Arkush

Original airdate: November 27, 2006

Synopsis:

Six months ago, Hiro finds himself at the cafe and tries to warn Charlie to not come into work tomorrow. She has him pose with her for a birthday picture, after which Hiro notices the rain outside, a rain that has been going on all week according to Charlie. Hiro realizes that he did not teleport back in time one day, but much much more. He decides to stay there and gets a job working at the cafe, giving Charlie the Japanese phrase book that she would quote from 6 months down the line, and the two begin developing a closeness. Hiro attempts to convince her of his abilities, but she thinks it’s just a magic trick of some kind. Eventually, unable to convince her of his power, he tells her about the ancient tradition of origami, and Charlie answers that she had read about it, that if a person folds 1000 cranes, they will be granted one wish. Hiro uses his power to stop time and when he starts it again, he has folded 1000 cranes all over the cafe, shocking Charlie. He asks her to go to Japan, and when she asks if she’s going alone, he shows her his ticket. Later that day Charlie looks troubled and Hiro goes to her as she confesses she has a blood clot in her brain and is dying. Hiro is despondent, thinking he was there to save her. The two come in close for a kiss, but Hiro’s power activates and he finds himself back in Japan in the present day, unable to use his power to teleport again.

Six months ago, Niki attends an alcoholics anonymous meeting, speaking about her issues, when she notices someone watching her in the group. Outside the meeting she goes to the man, Hal, her father, and asks why he’s there. He tells her he wants to reconnect with her and his grandson, but Niki isn’t sure she’s ready for that. She goes to visit the gravesite of her sister Jessica, and talks with DL about Hal wanting to see them, with DL advising her to let him come by for dinner. Hal comes by, happy to be invited, giving Micah a brand new computer which he promptly runs off to his room with. Niki tells Hal about their troubles trying to get Micah into. Private school and he offers them any assistance they need, thanking them for letting him back into their lives after all he’s done. Niki feigns ignorance at what he’s talking about and Hal tells her she’s only as sick as her secrets before going to see what Micah’s doing. When he sees that Micah has started disassembling the computer he goes into a rage and quickly decides he needs to leave, giving them a blank check to use for whatever they need, with Niki wondering what did Hal do to her, but Hal leaves, astonished she doesn’t remember. Niki looks into a mirror, and suddenly sees two images of herself looking back at her. Later that evening, Jessica goes to see Hal and attacks him, as he is in disbelief that this could be her. Jessica explains that she took Hal’s abuse, his insults, his punches, all so that Niki wouldn’t have to, and that it was he who killed her. She leaves him with his blank check and tells him to stay away from them.

Six months ago, Peter, Nathan, Heidi, and Angela are together at a holiday party celebrating Peter’s new job as a nurse. Angela mentions that their father couldn’t make the party because he was in a meeting with Mr. Linderman, but Peter brushes it off, obviously not a fan of his dad. Nathan tells Peter that the DA wants him to go after Linderman, but that doing so would mean their father gets implicated as well with the mob ties. Heidi interrupts their talk so the two can dance together. Later, after the party, as Heidi and Nathan drive home, a car comes up behind them and starts ramming them, until suddenly Nathan finds himself floating above the car as it crashes into the side of the road. Peter wakes up at that moment, dreaming about the crash. His phone rings, and he goes to meet Nathan at the hospital where they learn that Heidi is paralyzed. Nathan realizes that it was Linderman’s goons that attacked them because of his plans to go through with the DA’s orders. Later, Nathan goes to see Peter who is readying himself to give a deposition against his father and Linderman, but Nathan says it’s over because their dad just died of a heart attack. Nathan leaves with a cutting remark about how their father died without knowing his sons were going to stab him in the back.

Six months ago, Matt Parkman pulls over a young woman who turns out to be Eden. He decides to arrest her due to the obvious bottle of alcohol in the seat next to her, but she tells him that he really wants to eat some donuts instead, using her power. Matt walks off in a stupor, as Eden looks up and sees the Haitian staring at her from the road in front of her.  Matt meanwhile, sits in his patrol car, eating donuts mindlessly, when his partner shows up and tells him that his detective test is coming up in an hour. Matt wakes from his daydream and heads off to the test, but he later returns home and tells his wife Janice that he failed again. She tells him to let them know about his learning disability but he refuses, suddenly catching a stray thought about how Janice thinks of him as her hero.

Six months ago, Chandra Suresh went to see Gabriel Gray, a watchmaker and repairman. Gabriel seems to know just how to fix things, showing an innate sense of understanding how things work, fixing Chandra’s watch when he can just tell it was running slightly slow. Chandra gives him his book, telling him to read it and contact him if he’s interested in learning more. Gabriel does and they begin undergoing tests, but they don’t give the answers Chandra was hoping for and he decides to stop them. Gabriel is incensed, angry that he isn't as special as he always wanted to be, and storms off, taking a post it note of another person with talents that Chandra was going to contact. Gabriel contacts the man himself, who comes to the watch shop and demonstrates his telekinesis ability. Gabriel gives his name to the man as Sylar, a name from a watch brand he had been fixing. The man asks Sylar to take away the ability due to him being worried he may hurt someone and Sylar, sensing that the man’s mind is broken, giving him his ability, renders him unconscious with a heavy blow, telling him he will fix him. Later, he goes to Chandra and demonstrates his newly developed telekinesis power and Chandra is amazed, now hopeful for the future, with Gabriel metaphorically frothing at the mouth at the many other people out there with abilities, vowing to work with Chandra to find them.

Six months ago, Claire is finally offered a position on the cheerleading team and her and Jackie end up messing around with her uniform causing Claire to put her hand through a glass cabinet, cutting it badly. As her mother deals with the injury and starts to head off for the emergency room, HRG takes a call from Chandra Suresh who asks him to come meet with him, to which he does, learning of the man’s work in tracking down people with abilities. Chandra would like to talk with Claire, but HRG says that would be problematic for his family and wishes to not go further into it, to which Chandra agrees. However, later when HRG returns home, he notices Claire’s hand which has healed completely. Later, he goes to see Eden, with the Haitian, and strong-arms her into working for him, using her abilities for good, and she agrees to go to Chandra Suresh’s apartment and erase Claire’s name from his notes.

In present day, Hiro returns to the cafe and finds Ando who is overjoyed to see him, but saddened to learn that Hiro couldn’t save Charlie, as Hiro says the power is bigger than him and he can’t change the past, no matter how hard he wishes, admitting his failure.
