In this episode of The Wrestling Movies Rewatch, Cory and Eoghan make fair and even handed judgements, without resorting to kidnapping or violence as they discuss No Holds Barred.

Our Favourite Trivia:

Match of the Week: 1989 survivor series match with Zeus

Tommy Lister, a non-wrestler, participated in 3 matches in the WWF to promote the film. The storyline was that Zeus was upset that Hogan beat him in the movie so he wanted to beat him in real life. This makes the movie DOUBLE KAYFABE. If the movie had been a success, Zeus and Hogan were going to have a 1 on 1 match at Wrestlemania.

The movie was produced by star Hulk Hogan and his boss, World Wrestling Federation head honcho Vince McMahon, only to be distributed by New Line Cinema after completion. When the first draft of the script was turned in, Hogan and McMahon disapproved of it, so they checked into a hotel in Redington Beach, Florida, and stayed up for 72 hours rewriting the script together.

Vince self financed the movie for $8,000,000 and it barely broke even. Jim Ross famously referred to it as “no profit allowed.”

Though the film deals with a TV exec trying to poach Rip for his network, Hogan would actually jump from WWF to WCW in 1994. His relationship with McMahon has been strained over the years but they’ve still conducted business together and even had a match against one another.
