RW588 - Heroes Rewatch - All EU Part 1

In this weeks episode of The Heroes Rewatch, Cory and Tom find backstories and side quests as they discuss the graphic novel issues 35-51.

Synopsis:

In the story It Takes A Village, we begin with the Haitian as a young boy in Haiti, in a small village that for years seemed to have been protected from the outside influence of Haitian President, Francois Duvalier, dictator of Haiti from 1957 to 1971. While other villages fell prey to his military police, the Tonton Macoutes, the village that The Haitian lived in as a boy seemed to be safe from everyone, with many of the boy’s friends telling him that his father, Guillame was the reason, claiming he had great powers. Indeed, when men would come to attack the village, the Haitian’s father would use his powers to cause them great horror. Alternatively, for those who lived in the village, he used his contesting power of transmitting great bliss and ecstasy to his people.

On one particular day when a group of the Tonton Macoutes entered the village, Guillame used his powers as his son came close to watch as the men began to throw up. Suddenly however, Guillame’s powers failed, and he realized it was because of his son, lashing out at him angrily. Guillame was arrested and strung up for all to see, putting his failure to protect his village on display. No one dared to help him, understanding that his failure meant their gods, the Loa, who granted him powers had abandoned him. After being released, Guillame decided to make a sacrifice to the Loa, to have his powers returned, telling his son to be nowhere near him, his anger barely in check. Indeed, his powers worked and people began to feel his great bliss, but his son, feeling great pride that his father was back in power, got too close and again, the powers faded. Guillame beat his son, with the boy praying for death, but instead, the young Haitian’s powers went into overdrive and wiped the minds of all the villagers nearby them.

Guillame and his son left the village to find a sacred mountain, and the father told his son of the story of the crane and the snake, and how the snake longed for the wings so that he could fly as well, thinking the crane was not worthy of that gift. The snake eventually found a way to eat the crane, stealing his wings, and managed to start flying. However, the snake soon learned that he lost touch with the ground and had nowhere to go. Guillame explained that with his powers he could do so much but only used them to get the villagers high and sleep with their women, understanding he needed to make penance for his transgressions.

Guillame proceeded to attack his son, his goal to kill him. The boy understood, realizing that if his father’s peace meant that the boy had to die, he would gladly do so. He reached out to touch his father one last time and immediately accessed all of his memories, in turn revealing them to his father who had forgotten all of them. Guillame was shocked at the memories he had left behind, and gave his son a necklace with a helix symbol on it, telling him to go and help others find peace. A man named Thompson soon showed up, offering to help the boy and all others like him.
