Match of the Week:
Ready to Rumble Cage Match - Slamboree 2000
The film was produced by Warner Bros. under Time Warner who owned WCW.
The story of Diamond Dallas Page going against the planned storyline and pinning King for the title at the start of the film, is a jab at Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels doing the same to Bret Hart in WWF.
Arqutte was scripted by head WCW writer Vince Russo, a man known for terrible storylines in wrestling, including breaking the 4th wall and writing himself into winning the world title. Russo felt it would capitalize on Arquette’s buzz following Scream 3’s release. WCW had begun its downfall and they needed new viewers.
Arquette, a wrestling fan, felt it was a terrible idea and would ruin the legacy of the title. He was told if he didn’t do it they wouldn’t promote the film on WCW Monday Nitro, so he agreed to do it.
Arquette was given basic wrestling training from Kanyon and Diamond Dallas Page. Shane Helms was Arquette’s stunt double, and Chris Kanyon was Oliver Platt’s.
There have been 14 world champs after David Arquette.
Real life WCW president and personality Eric Bischoff was originally scheduled to star as a fictionalized version of himself but he was fired from WCW before production began and replaced with the character of Titus Sinclair. Bischoff would come back after the film’s production, albeit purely as his on air persona.
Martin Landau’s character is based on Stu Hart.
The movie was infamous for the marketing stunts done on WCW programming to promote it.
Part of the World Title feud involved Jeff Jarrett being mad he wasn’t invited to be in the movie.
