Match of the Week: Atsushi Onita vs. Terry Funk Exploding No Rope Barbed Wire Exploding Ring Time Bomb Death Match
Beyond the Mat took 3-5 years to shoot on an initial $500,000 budget. The timeline is all over the place, with the Mick Foley segments happening after Terry Funk’s retirement. He was actually involved in the Mick Foley/Undertaker Hell in a Cell match, and wrestled for WWF in the period the film was shot. He would come out of retirement… a lot.
Roddy Piper claimed it was the best pro wrestling doco ever.
WCW didn’t want any part of the documentary. They would later take part in a Louis Theroux doco for the BBC that had a very similar style.
Jake Roberts claimed he was told the documentary would help his kids, but Blaustein states that was never agreed upon.
Vince McMahon removed all advertising of the film from WWE programming, claiming it was because it advertised other promotions. This may be a response to lawsuits filed against WWE.
Terry Funk was in Road House. That is all.
