Chapter Three 'Kindred':
Volume: Two
Written by: J.J. Philbin
Directed by: Paul Edwards
Original airdate: October 8, 2007
Synopsis:
As Peter discusses his hesitation with Ricky and the others, he picks up thoughts from one of them, Will, who has his own plan to steal the money from Ricky. Peter, not realizing he’s only hearing thoughts, causes Ricky to grab him and tell him that he trusts Will because he’s family, showing him their tattooed family crest.
As the crew gets ready for the heist, Peter has problems trying to activate his powers, unsure of what to do. As Peter plays as a distraction to the armored car guards, Ricky and his men hold them up at gunpoint from behind. As they start carting off the lockbox of money, a guard hits the alarm and a shootout starts, with Ricky hitting a guard to get away rather than shooting him, and Peter uses telekinesis to push the armored vehicle in the guards way, and they all escape. As they later count the money, Will reveals his real plans and holds up Ricky at gunpoint, telling him to give him the money. Everyone realizes Peter was right, and Will shoots Peter, but he uses his powers to heal and then hold Will up against the wall, choking him. Caitlin yells out at Peter and he drops Will who runs away. Ricky is pleased at Peter’s help, and offers him a place in their family as Caitlin gives him the family crest tattoo. Peter wonders if he should open the box and see who he really is, but Caitlin says if he is happy with who he is right now, maybe he should let it rest for now. He agrees and kisses her.
Maya is exhausted from her and her brother’s travels and he decides to try and steal a car to help them, but the police see them and give chase. Maya gets away but Alejandro is captured and arrested. Maya shows up later at the police station to bail her brother out but she has very little money to do so. She explains they are trying to get to America to see a doctor because she is sick, but the officer asks her if she has her traveling documents, which of course she doesn’t. She shows the officers her wanted poster and they start to grab her as she activates her powers, causing them to cry black tears and fall over and die. Alejandro, seeing his cellmate start to do the same, calls out to Maya and she lets him out, along with the cellmate, as they get into his car and drive away.
Micah talks with Niki, telling her he doesn’t want to leave Las Vegas, but Nikki tells him it’s for their own safety. Micah runs back to DL’s grave to say a final goodbye before they head out for New Orleans, where he meets an elderly distant family member, Nana Dawson.
A woman named Michelle sunbathes on the beach as a seemingly healed and healthy Sylar slowly awakens. She reveals herself as Candice, showing Sylar where he actually is and his healing wounds as he screams. Angry that he can't use his powers anymore, Candice shows him what she can do and why he should be satisfied to be with her. She promises that her company will fix him up and restore his seemingly missing powers, but instead becomes aggressive and attacks her, the ticking sound in his head revealing his powers are returning, and using them to find out the secret of her power. Unfortunately, her power isn’t working for him as he stumbles outside in pain, wondering why.
At Yamamoto Industries, Ando is being dressed down by his boss, when he looks at Kensei’s sword and finds a bunch of hidden scrolls inside it. He begins to read them, realizing that Hiro has documented his adventure in Ancient Japan for him.
Meanwhile, back in the past, Hiro tries educating Kensei on his powers, who seem to think they are a curse. Kensei still decides to run away leaving Hiro distraught. He later finds Kensei, demonstrating his own abilities and he comes to the conclusion that being able to survive any wound will make him a lot of money. Hiro then takes him to face the 90 Angry Ronins so that he can steal the Fire Scroll, leaving him there while he goes to wait with Yaeko. She mentions that Kensei seems to be two men, one a beast, one gentle, which confuses her. Luckily, Kensei returns, scroll in hand, and she embraces him, kissing him. Hiro watches, sad and jealous. He decides to leave, bids farewell, but changes his mind at the last second, running after Kensei and Yaeko.
Mohinder, having returned to the States, is working in a new lab that Bob setup in Isaac Mendez’s old apartment, and being meticulously watched by him. When Bob has to leave to take a call, Mohinder calls Bennett and sends him a picture of a painting he found of Mr. Bennett dead while Claire is held by a shadowy figure nearby. Bob, outside on the phone, talks with Nikki, who asks him if he really can cure her, to which Bob says yes, but that they will need something from her first.
At school, Claire tells West that all he saw was her giving herself a pedicure, something he finds ridiculous and the two part. However, in class West brings up to their teacher the idea of what would happen if humans could regenerate the way lizards do, causing Claire to become very upset. Later he finds her and she yells at him, asking what he wants, and he says he just wants her to admit she’s different. Claire lets everything out as West takes her in his arms and flies away with her. They spend the day talking on the beach about their abilities and kissing when Claire notices two marks on his neck. He explains a few years ago he experienced some lost time on his way to school, remembering only that before it happened he saw a man with horn rimmed glasses who looked at him like he was an animal, with Claire realizing it was her father.
Back at the Bennett household, Mr. Bennett stares at the picture Mohinder sent him on his computer screen as Claire walks up to the door to his office, staring at him. The two look at each other, bidding each other a simple goodnight.

Synopsis:
Bennett talks with Claire, thinking she is seeing a boy, but she manages to calm his fears. At school, Claire is invited by the cheerleaders to join their squad given how she stood up to Debbie, the leader last week. She tells them she will think about it before heading off to walk with West, telling him she isn’t sure if they should keep hanging out, given her over protective dad. West makes her promise to have one more date with him and she agrees.
At home, Claire makes an excuse about needing to do a report so she can sneak out to meet West. Unbeknownst to Claire, Bennett is suspicious and follows her but West grabs her quickly as they fly away. She asks him to take her to the Hollywood sign where she brings up her past, unable to tell him much, but he tells her that he can’t help her if she doesn’t trust him. He tells her to jump, with her thinking he wants to see her powers work, but when she jumps he flies down and catches her, telling her that he knows she can heal, but he never wants to see her hurt.
West gets Claire home, but the time has passed quickly and she is late. She goes inside and Bennett yells at her, but she uses the cheerleading team as an excuse, explaining how it’s very important to her and he decides to allow it. Afterwards, he meets with The Haitian who reveals that he has a lead on the paintings but they have to go to Odessa in Ukraine.
Maya and Alejandro continue traveling with Derek but he says they need to split up when they get to the border. Suddenly, they stop the car because lying in the middle of the street is an unconscious and injured Sylar. He calls himself Gabriel Grey and tells them he knows and has worked with Dr. Suresh, the author of the book Maya has. Maya is elated and trusting but Alejandro remains suspicious.
At a rest stop, Derek reveals a newspaper to Sylar/Gabriel that shows Maya and Alejandro as fugitives. Sylar/Gabriel tells Derek to get the police, but then he attacks Derek, killing him, while he returns to the car and tells the brother and sister that Derek is onto them and getting the police. Maya panics and her power activates, affecting Gabriel/Sylar but Alejandro concentrates and manages to nullify her power. Sylar/Gabriel is fascinated by this as the ticking sound in his head starts again.
Micah is rudely awoken by his irritating cousin, Damon, who asks his nana for money for a pay per view fight and refuses him. Monica, the young breadwinner of the family, notices how her nana was watching a cooking show before heading out to her job, hoping to get into a management training program. At her work, as she talks with a coworker about her hopes, she ends up cutting a tomato the exact same way she saw on TV earlier. Her manager shows up and tells her that she just isn’t qualified for the program due to her home life, unable to be available to move to anywhere in the state. He tells her to be happy she at least has a job in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Micah gets into Damon’s good graces by secretly using his ability to get him the pay per view fight for free. Monica comes home, saddened, and then upset that Micah rigged the cable, telling everyone has to follow the rules of the house while he’s here. He gives her a hug, placing his hand on her back, with Monica sensing something is wrong but he just says he wishes he could fix her dreams for her. Micah returns to the TV with Damon, as Monica sees the fight they’re watching, wrestlers battling each other.
The next evening at work, Monica closes up shop but is attacked by a robber trying to steal the cash register money. Monica executes a perfect jump and pole spin that she saw used during the fight on TV earlier, disabling the man, with him running away, as Monica and her manager stare in shock.
Meanwhile Molly continues having nightmares, with Matt unable to get into her head to find out why, feeling himself pushed away every time.
Angela Petrelli confesses to the death of Kaito Nakamura but Matt sees through her ruse. She contacts him in his mind telling him to just take the statement, telling him that if the police start digging they will find out about all of us.
A newly clean shaven Nathan shows up, angry his mother was coerced into a confession but Matt reveals that he knows she is innocent, telling him about his own powers, and vowing to continue looking into the case. Nathan sees the pictures of Nakamura and his mother and remembers seeing it before. Nathan talks with his mother who tells him that she has done so many bad things in her life, it doesn’t matter which crime she confesses to.
Matt and Nathan head back to his house and find the full photo of the 12 founding members of The Company, one of which Matt recognizes as his estranged father. Meanwhile, Nathan looks over old pictures of Peter, vowing to make things right, before looking into a mirror and seeing a vision of his own scarred face again before punching the mirror.
Back home with Mohinder, Matt shows Molly the picture, hoping she could locate him, but she backs away, revealing that HE is the man whose eyes she has been seeing in her nightmares. Matt tries to convince Mohinder that he needs Molly’s help but he is against it. Molly however agrees and begins using her powers, locating the city and state, and even the apartment number. However, as she tries to stop using her power, she can’t and she ends up passing out, screaming for someone to leave her alone. As Matt and Mohinder try to revive her, he can only hear her thoughts screaming for Matt to help her.
Back-issues:
Dana Davis played Monica. She’s had a number of main cast roles such as in The Nine, starring Tim Daly (nine surviving hostages from a spectacular bank hold-up meet regularly. The memories keep haunting them, in flashbacks that slowly reveal the story), the series 10 Things I Hate About You (at Padua High, newcomers Kat and Bianca Stratford attempt to navigate the popular crowd), and Franklin & Bash (lawyers and lifelong friends Jared Franklin and Peter Bash are recruited by a large firm's major partner after winning a high-profile case). She also did voices for the animated Disney series Star Vs The Forces Of Evil, and the new She-Ra cartoon. Her latest role is in the last few animated seasons of Craig of the Creek (follows a young boy, Craig, and his two friends, Kelsey and JP, as they go on adventures within a world of untamed, kid-dominated wilderness in the creek).
May, the cheerleader, was played by Janel Parrish. Her biggest role is in Pretty Little Liars, but she’s been the lead in a number of lesser known movies such as Tiger (a practicing Sikh is banned by the boxing commission for refusing to back down from his religious beliefs, with Mickey Rourke), Mighty Oak (In the ensuing years from losing her vocalist brother in a car crash, a young guitar prodigy comes into play - which is left to speculation that he could be a reincarnation of her late brother), and I’ll Be Watching (after narrowly escaping the clutches of a deadly stalker, a young woman flees to a remote town where she rebuilds her life and finds the man of her dreams...until the man of her nightmares tracks her down), amongst others.
Mr. Lamont was “that guy” Mark Christopher Lawrence. His biggest role is as Big Mike in the series Chuck, but he has over 120 credits to his name, including the aforementioned Shake Rattle and Roll: An American Love Story as Fats Domino. He’s appeared in Seinfeld, Glee, Garfield: The Movie, The Mullets, K-Pax, Men Behaving Badly, and even Halloween II.
Heroes EU:
Petrified Lightning / The Trial of the Black Bear
Petrified Lightning finds Peter contemplating opening the box with his personal details inside, when he decides he wants to take Caitlin on a date. They end up walking on the beach with Caitlin, trying to get his lightning powers to work. While they do so, at his request, Caitlin tells him the story of Cuchulainn, an irish folk hero who once captured a mermaid, but was convinced to let her go in exchange for carving her image to his shield which would grant him great power over his enemies in battle when he yelled her name. Peter takes inspiration from the story and yells Caitlin’s name as lightning erupts from his fingers and petrifies the sand around them. Catlin wonders aloud if the mermaid actually gave the hero the power, or if she merely unlocked his own power for him.
The Trial of the Black Bear is a retelling of a Kensei story told in a “manga” style according to the description. Kensei is depicted as the hero that Hiro always pictured him as, along with a sidekick who is a talking tiny panda that wears glasses like Hiro. As Kensei attempts to attack a tiny bear holding the scroll he is looking for, the bear’s mother appears from behind a rock and begins chasing Kensei while the tiny Panda retrieves the scroll.
The Rogue?
Derek and his friend Rick are two college pledges on a scavenger hunt required for them to join a fraternity. Their journey takes them to Claire’s campus where she is in a discussion with head cheerleader Debbie. After the conversation, Claire mistakenly leaves her keys in the car, allowing Derek and Rick to steal it, taking it out for the day to gather the scavenger hunt items, and eventually driving to meet the fraternity pledge master in Mexico.
This issue wasn’t available on the NBC website but rather a reward for signing up for a newsletter. There are references in the comic to a portrait of a man named Drucker on the fraternity house’s walls.
